No: the cited research does not show that you can turn any existing TV or monitor into a headset-free holographic television. It demonstrates several lab-built ways to use ordinary-screen light or 2D video as input for specialized 3D display systems. Each still depends on display hardware and processing beyond the screen itself; none is established here as a consumer adapter or product.
What the studies actually demonstrated
“Holographic TV” can describe different ways of presenting 3D imagery. The three demonstrations below use different inputs and display setups, so their results are not interchangeable.

Can you turn your TV into a hologram?
Not on the evidence in these studies. A television can supply image data to a research converter, as in the 2026 game demonstration, but the converter and 3D display apparatus are essential parts of that setup. The phone-screen experiment likewise used the phone as a light source within an optical arrangement; it did not convert the phone or another ordinary screen into a holographic television by itself.
These approaches require a designed display system. Depending on the method, that can include an SLM, hologram-forming optical elements, a light-field or LCD stack, and processing to turn image content into the signals the display needs. Converting conventional 2D video into 3D display output also requires a way to derive or supply depth information and render the display signal. The studies do not establish a universal accessory that performs those tasks for any TV.

Does a hologram mean the same thing as a glasses-free 3D screen?
No. In holography, the aim is to reconstruct light-wave information so the image can show real depth. A conventional monitor presents a flat image that can simulate depth through visual cues. Princeton Engineering’s 2024 explanation distinguishes those two cases and notes that holographic display systems still face trade-offs in image quality, field of view and fabrication.
“Headset-free” describes how a viewer sees an image, not whether the display needs special hardware. EyeReal’s reported result is a wide-view, full-parallax light-field display, while the other demonstrations concern computer-generated holography. Neither term means that an ordinary screen alone produces a floating image in a room.

Do you need glasses or a headset, and can a phone screen make a hologram?
The cited demonstrations do not establish a need for a headset to view their display output, but they do rely on dedicated display or optical arrangements. The 2024 phone experiment specifically used light emitted by an iPhone screen to feed a holography setup with a two-layer hologram cascade and an SLM. It shows that phone-screen light can be used as an input in that configuration—not that a phone can create a viewable hologram without additional optics.
Is there a holographic TV you can buy?
These sources describe research demonstrations and prototypes, not a verified consumer television or plug-and-play upgrade for household screens. They do not establish retail availability, a standardized adapter, manufacturing cost or long-term reliability. A generic 3D monitor, VR headset or spinning hologram fan should not be mistaken for the systems described in these papers.

What would have to improve for this to become a living-room TV?
A practical product would need to bring together the image conversion, display hardware, viewing range and image quality in a system that is affordable and compatible with real-world content. Princeton Engineering’s 2024 report describes present challenges including limited viewing angle, quality trade-offs and fabrication difficulty. The demonstrations mark progress on distinct technical pieces, but do not show that those obstacles have been resolved for a consumer television.
