German glassmaker SCHOTT and Japan’s Kuramoto Seisakusho formed a South Korean venture to process large-format glass substrates for TFT-LCD displays. The facility was in Ochang Science Park, about 60 miles south of Seoul; it was a glass-processing plant, not an LCD-panel factory or consumer brand.
What SCHOTT launched in South Korea
The venture, Schott-Kuramoto Processing Korea Co. Ltd., handled large-format TFT-LCD glass substrates used by display manufacturers. SCHOTT supplied the glass, while Kuramoto contributed substrate-processing technology. The work prepared the glass for use in display panels; the venture was not described as manufacturing finished LCD panels.
The partners were Germany’s SCHOTT and Japan’s Kuramoto Seisakusho. SCHOTT held a 75% stake and Kuramoto held 25%, according to the launch-era reporting.
Where the plant was and what it cost
The facility was located in Ochang Science Park, South Korea, roughly 60 miles south of Seoul. EE Times reported the joint venture as a $144 million project in February 2007. SCHOTT’s earlier November 2005 announcement described a €90 million Korean production site within a broader €150 million investment program for TFT-LCD glass-substrate production in Jena and South Korea. Capacity, products and intended customers
In February 2007, EE Times reported planned monthly capacity of 40,000 fifth-generation units and 37,000 seventh-generation sheets, with the facility expected to reach full capacity by August 2007. The report did not specify substrate dimensions alongside those generation labels.
The processed glass was intended for flat-panel displays in PC monitors, notebooks and televisions. Reported prospective customers included Korean manufacturers Samsung Electronics and LG.Philips LCD, as well as other Asian panel makers. The plant therefore served the display supply chain upstream of finished screens.

The differing investment numbers reflect changing dates and descriptions: the 2005 euro amounts covered a wider program and a Korean site estimate, while 2006 and 2007 reports gave dollar figures for the Korean venture or its first phase.

The arrangement combined SCHOTT’s supply of large-format glass with Kuramoto’s processing expertise close to major Asian display manufacturers. SCHOTT management-board member Karl-Peter Merz described it as “the biggest single investment outside Germany in terms of our LCD business,” as quoted by EE Times on 23 February 2007.
