The Sapphire Atlantis 9800XT is a Radeon 9800 XT graphics card that appeared in Personal Computer World’s May 2004 graphics-card group test. The magazine marked it “HIGHLY COMMENDED,” but the accessible review information does not provide a dependable numerical benchmark score for the card. That makes the review useful for identifying its period standing and test conditions, but not for predicting how a particular used card will perform today.

What the Sapphire Atlantis 9800XT is

“Sapphire Atlantis 9800XT” identifies a Sapphire-branded Radeon 9800 XT model included in a contemporary graphics-card comparison. The May 2004 Personal Computer World group test is a period source for the model and its review accolade. It does not, in the available record, establish the specifications of every card sold under that name or the condition of any card now offered second-hand.

How the review assessed it

Unreal Tournament 2003

The review benchmarked Unreal Tournament 2003 at 1,024 × 768 and 1,600 × 1,200, including a run with 4× full-scene anti-aliasing (FSAA). It explains that higher frame rates indicate better results. The test demonstrates that the reviewers considered both resolution and anti-aliasing when comparing cards; it does not provide a safely transcribed standalone frame-rate result for the Sapphire model.

PCMark04 Graphics Test Suite

The group test also lists the Atlantis 9800XT in PCMark04 Graphics Test Suite comparisons at 1,024 × 768, 1,024 × 768 with 4× FSAA, and 1,600 × 1,200. These are documented test settings, not scores. Without reliable figures for the card and its comparison models, the review record cannot support a ranking based on benchmark numbers.

What “Highly Commended” tells you

The contemporary benchmark presentation labels the Sapphire Atlantis 9800XT “HIGHLY COMMENDED.” This is evidence that the card received positive recognition in that 2004 group test. It is not a present-day buying recommendation, a guarantee of compatibility with a specific computer, or a substitute for the missing numerical results.

Should you buy one for a retro PC?

Consider it only as a candidate for a particular restoration or period-correct build, not as a purchase justified by the old accolade alone. The archival review cannot establish the condition, functionality, compatibility, or current price of a card being sold now. Those details must be checked against the exact listing and the intended AGP system.

  • Check the target system: Confirm that the motherboard and the card are compatible before purchase; the 2004 review does not verify compatibility with your individual system.
  • Check the individual card: Ask for clear photographs and evidence of working condition, and establish what is included. The model name alone does not establish that a used example functions.
  • Judge the asking price and risk: Compare the live asking price with the card’s condition and your restoration needs. The archival material gives no current market valuation.
  • Use the review in context: Treat the award as historical context, not as a modern performance comparison. The documented tests do not supply a dependable numerical result for this model.

What the historical evidence cannot establish

The May 2004 group test supports the card’s identification, accolade, benchmark titles, resolutions, and anti-aliasing settings. It does not establish an exact score for the Sapphire model, how a surviving card performs after decades of use, whether it will work in a particular AGP system, or what it should cost today. Those questions depend on the specific card and system rather than the model name alone.
