Historically, yes—but not as a current blanket offer. In a November 20, 2020 announcement, SANS described CyberStart America as open to all U.S. high school students. SANS’s program-history page records CyberStart America as running from 2020 through 2024, so that statement should be read as a description of the historical program, not proof that general enrollment remains open today.
What CyberStart America was
CyberStart was an online, gamified cybersecurity platform. Students learned by solving interactive challenges and using digital tools rather than by working from a physical kit or attending a conventional classroom course.
Historical SANS material identifies these subject areas:
- Linux
- Programming
- Web attacks
- Binary attacks
- Cryptography
- Forensics
Those topics describe the historical brochure and should not be treated as a guaranteed list for every later platform edition.

Was it really open to every high school student?
SANS Director of Research Alan Paller said in the Georgia Governor’s Office announcement dated November 20, 2020: “Building on the successes of Girls Go CyberStart, CyberStart America is open to all high school students.” That is the clearest source for the broad eligibility claim.
The wording establishes the intended audience at launch; it does not establish that the program is currently accepting every student, nor does it verify the precise launch date or every original enrollment rule.
Is CyberStart still available?
Current general availability was not established. CyberStart’s program-history page says CyberStart America ran from 2020 to 2024. A separate U.S. Army JROTC page describes free CyberStart access for JROTC and Civil Air Patrol students in grades 9–12, but that narrower page does not prove that the former nationwide offer continues or that it is the same enrollment arrangement.
Students checking availability should therefore confirm the active program name, dates, geography, grade requirements and registration status on the current SANS or CyberStart site before relying on older announcements.

CyberStart America and JumpStart into Cyber are not the same offer
In 2023, SANS, Sinclair Community College and the National Science Foundation announced JumpStart into Cyber, an eight-week summer initiative for underrepresented students. It began with CyberStart activities, but it was a separate program with a selective next step.
| Program | Audience and timing | What participants received | Progression |
|---|---|---|---|
| CyberStart America | Described in 2020 as open to all high school students; program history lists 2020–2024 | Free online CyberStart platform access, according to the historical description | No universal SANS course or certification is established |
| JumpStart into Cyber | Eight-week summer program announced in 2023 for underrepresented students | CyberStart-based activities within a structured initiative | Top 250 performers could advance to SANS SEC275: Foundations training |
| Army JROTC/Civil Air Patrol offer | Grades 9–12 in the audience described by the Army JROTC page | Free access described for those groups | Does not establish general public enrollment |
What students could expect from the learning model
Challenge-based practice
The platform’s central method was to present cybersecurity problems that students solved in a game-like environment. This format can make technical ideas more approachable than a lecture-only introduction, while still exposing learners to authentic concepts such as command-line work, attacks and evidence analysis.

A broad introductory survey
The historical topic list spans operating systems, code, offensive techniques, cryptography and digital forensics. That breadth makes CyberStart better understood as an exploration and skills-discovery platform than as proof of professional competence in any one specialty.
Separate pathways for selected students
JumpStart into Cyber shows how CyberStart could feed into a more formal training route, but only selected top performers in that separate 2023 initiative could move on to SEC275. Participation in CyberStart America alone did not guarantee that course, a certification or a job outcome.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show
- Established: SANS publicly characterized CyberStart America as open to all high school students in 2020.
- Established: The program-history page dates CyberStart America to 2020–2024.
- Established: CyberStart used online cybersecurity challenges and games.
- Not established: A current, nationwide enrollment option for all high school students.
- Not established: A universal completion rate, participation total, career-impact figure, SANS certification or guaranteed instructor-led training.
How to evaluate an old CyberStart announcement
- Check whether the page is dated 2020–2024 or refers to a current cohort.
- Confirm whether it describes platform access, a live course or a selective scholarship pathway.
- Read the eligibility wording for country, grade, school affiliation and dates.
- Look for a current registration link and terms rather than assuming an archived announcement is still active.
The Bottom Line
CyberStart America was historically presented as free, online cybersecurity training open to all U.S. high school students, but SANS’s own program history places it in 2020–2024. Treat current general enrollment as unverified, and do not confuse the platform with the separate, selective JumpStart into Cyber pathway.
