Samsung’s October 2022 announcement marked a specific milestone: its LPDDR5X memory reached 8.5 gigabits per second (Gbps) and was validated for Qualcomm Snapdragon mobile platforms. That confirmed compatibility at the platform level; it did not guarantee that every phone or app would run a fixed percentage faster. Samsung has since announced LPDDR5X speeds of up to 10.7Gbps, so 8.5Gbps is a historical 2022 figure, not its current top speed.
What Samsung announced
On October 18, 2022, Samsung Electronics said its LPDDR5X DRAM had achieved an operating speed of 8.5Gbps and had been validated for Qualcomm Snapdragon mobile platforms. Samsung described this as surpassing the previous 7.5Gbps maximum. The result followed work to optimize the high-speed signal environment between a phone’s application processor and memory. Samsung’s announcement presented the validation as a joint ecosystem milestone.
Samsung’s Korean technical account specifies a 14nm EUV-based 8GB LPDDR5X package. It describes input/output signal-design work intended to reduce noise during high-speed communication. Samsung also compared the 8.5Gbps rate with LPDDR5’s 6.4Gbps operating speed, calling it 1.3 times faster. Samsung’s technical release supplies those package and process details.
What Snapdragon validation meant
Validation showed that the memory interface had been checked for operation with Qualcomm Snapdragon mobile platforms. It matters because a memory component must work with the platform’s application processor and its signal environment; achieving a peak data rate alone does not establish that compatibility.

Samsung executive vice president Daniel Lee said the joint validation would accelerate market-wide availability of the high-speed interface by more than a year. Qualcomm vice president Ziad Asghar said Qualcomm was the first in the mobile industry to enable LPDDR5X at 8.5Gbps on Snapdragon platforms. These are statements about the companies’ validation and ecosystem position, not a claim that every device would use the memory at its peak rate.
What the speed could—and could not—mean for phones and AI
LPDDR5X is low-power DRAM intended for devices and systems that need fast memory access. Samsung identified mobile, gaming, camera and AI workloads as potential beneficiaries. A higher memory-interface data rate can support moving data between memory and a processor more quickly, but it is not a direct measure of whole-device performance.

The practical effect in a phone depends on the complete device and workload, including its processor, memory configuration, software and power management. The 8.5Gbps validation does not establish a fixed speedup for launching apps, taking photos, gaming or running an AI feature. Nor does it show that every Snapdragon phone announced around that time included this specific package.
The same distinction applies to AI: faster memory may be useful when a workload moves substantial data between memory and compute, but the announcement does not quantify an AI performance gain. Samsung’s current product information describes LPDDR5X uses in smartphones, laptops, PCs, servers and emerging on-device AI applications, and highlights a 32GB-capacity product. Those product capabilities should not be confused with the 8GB package described in the 2022 technical announcement. Samsung’s LPDDR5X product page gives its current application framing.

How the 8.5Gbps milestone fits Samsung’s later claims
The phrase “world’s fastest” belongs to the context of Samsung’s October 2022 announcement. On April 17, 2024, Samsung announced LPDDR5X supporting speeds of up to 10.7Gbps. That later figure makes 8.5Gbps a dated milestone, not Samsung’s latest announced LPDDR5X speed. Samsung’s 2024 announcement describes the newer rate.
These are peak interface data rates, not promises of equivalent gains in user-visible performance. Comparing two implementations also requires more than the Gbps figure: package capacity, process, power characteristics, platform validation, intended applications and announcement date all matter.

Is LPDDR5X an upgrade users can install?
No. The announcement concerns packaged DRAM validated for use by platform and device makers; it is not a retail memory module that a phone owner can install. Whether a particular phone uses LPDDR5X, and at what supported rate, depends on the device’s design and specifications.
