For Galaxy owners, Samsung Wallet UPI combines UPI payments with other Wallet features; Google Pay offers several UPI payment methods, including Tap & Pay where both the phone and merchant support NFC. Neither provider’s published descriptions establish that its service is categorically safer. Choose based on your device, the payment methods enabled for you, and where you pay.

Compatibility: check the phone and payment location
Samsung Wallet UPI
Start by checking whether your Galaxy model supports Samsung Wallet and the UPI features you want. Samsung’s cited UPI instructions describe ordinary UPI functions, but they do not establish that UPI NFC tap payments are available on a particular Galaxy model.
Google Pay UPI Tap & Pay
Google’s tap feature depends on the whole payment path, not just the app: the phone needs NFC, NFC must be enabled, an eligible UPI method must be active, and the merchant needs UPI NFC acceptance. Google identifies UPI NFC tags, QR stickers with NFC tags, and Smart Soundpods with NFC tags as possible merchant setups. See Google’s Tap & Pay requirements.
Google also says software integrity can affect contactless payments. Its NFC guidance flags developer Android versions, rooted devices, custom ROMs, modified factory software, untested devices, and unlocked bootloaders as possible reasons NFC payments may not work. Security: what the providers say—and what that does not prove
Samsung Wallet
Samsung describes Knox monitoring and protection, tokenization, encryption, and secure storage in its Wallet and payment materials. Its payment-service description says the card issuer assigns a device number and a key for transaction security codes; data is encrypted before transfer to the device and held in a secure area isolated from the operating system. These are Samsung’s descriptions of its controls and architecture, not independent comparative test results. Samsung’s Samsung Pay service page provides its payment-security explanation.
Google Pay
Google says Google Pay follows NPCI’s Mobile Application Security Framework 2025. It may block service when device settings fail security checks, including where software is not original or unmodified or potentially unsafe apps are detected. Google’s security-alert guidance describes these restrictions.

How to compare the claims
The available provider materials do not supply an independent, like-for-like security audit of Samsung Wallet and Google Pay. They therefore do not support a definitive claim that one is “more secure.” Whichever you use, keep your phone’s software updated, protect its screen lock and account, and never share your UPI PIN; NPCI explicitly advises users not to share it. On October 30, 2025, Samsung announced plans to integrate UPI onboarding into new Galaxy device setup and introduce fingerprint or face recognition for everyday UPI authentication without entering a PIN each time. Samsung said rollout would begin across supported devices soon, but its announcement does not provide a complete model list or establish that the features are now available on every Galaxy phone. Check current availability for your own device rather than assuming universal rollout. Samsung’s announcement sets out the stated rollout plan.

Which should you choose?
- Choose Samsung Wallet UPI if you use a supported Galaxy device and value having UPI alongside other Wallet items such as supported IDs, travel passes, keys, or coupons.
- Consider Google Pay if you want its documented UPI options, especially Tap & Pay, and your Android phone, UPI method, and merchants meet the NFC requirements.
- For either app, verify which payment methods are enabled for your account and whether the merchants you visit accept the payment flow you intend to use.
