If your Samsung TV turns on from its physical button, troubleshoot the remote: check its batteries or charge, clear the path to the TV, then test for an infrared (IR) signal with a phone camera. A camera flash confirms the remote is emitting IR, but it does not prove the TV is receiving it or that a Smart Remote is paired.
First check whether the problem is the TV or the remote
Try turning on the TV with its physical control. If that works, continue with the remote checks below. If the TV itself will not turn on, the fault may involve the TV or its power, so a remote diagnosis alone will not resolve it.
Identify your remote before testing its signal
A conventional infrared remote sends commands toward a receiver on the TV and needs a clear line of sight. A Samsung Smart Remote uses wireless pairing and can often work without being aimed directly at the TV. Samsung notes that remote functions and instructions vary by model and region; check your model’s manual or local Samsung support page if you are unsure which type you have.
Check power, batteries, and the path to the TV
- For a battery-powered remote, check that the batteries are installed in the correct orientation. If they are old or uncertain, replace both with fresh batteries.
- For a rechargeable or SolarCell remote, charge it according to the instructions for that model.
- Move objects away from the TV’s remote receiver and remove nearby potential sources of interference. Aim an IR remote directly at the TV.
Samsung lists battery, pairing, and infrared-sensor issues among common reasons a TV remote may not work, but does not provide prevalence figures. Samsung Philippines’ troubleshooting guidance covers these categories.

Test an IR remote with a phone camera
- Open the camera app on your phone and point the remote’s front end at the camera.
- Hold the remote’s Power button and look at the camera screen for a flash from the remote’s emitter.
- If you do not see a flash, try the phone’s front-facing camera. Some phone cameras filter infrared light.
If a flash appears, the remote is emitting IR. That does not confirm that the TV’s receiver can see the signal, that every remote button works, or that a wireless Smart Remote is paired. If there is no flash with either camera, recheck the batteries or charge before concluding that the remote may be faulty. See Samsung’s remote troubleshooting steps.

Pair a supported Samsung Smart Remote
With the TV on, hold Return and Play/Pause simultaneously for at least three seconds, then wait for the pairing prompt. This sequence applies to supported Smart Remotes; button combinations can differ by model. If it does not work, follow the manual or support instructions for the exact TV and remote. Samsung’s pairing guidance provides model-dependent troubleshooting.

Choose a replacement by exact model compatibility
If the remote still shows no IR signal after power checks, a replacement may be appropriate. Before buying, identify the exact TV model and, if available, the number on the original remote. Confirm that the replacement is listed as compatible with that TV; do not assume a remote will work across Samsung models simply because it is described as universal.
