A classic IR remote needs a clear path to the TV’s receiver; a paired Bluetooth Smart Remote usually does not. Some Smart Remotes also use IR for selected buttons, so which functions work depends on the specific remote and TV model.
How IR and Bluetooth differ

These are not mutually exclusive choices across all Samsung remotes. “Samsung remote” does not identify a single connection method or tell you which buttons use which link.
Which buttons use IR on a Samsung Smart Remote?
It depends on the model and generation. Samsung Canada says that on some Smart Remotes, volume and channel functions may still work over IR when Bluetooth is disconnected, while Voice and other smart features need Bluetooth restored. Samsung’s guidance does not establish that split for every remote.
A separate, dated example illustrates the variation: Samsung’s UK instructions for its 2014 Smart Control say every button except Power uses Bluetooth, while Power uses IR. That description applies to that 2014 control, not automatically to current models.

For an applicable Smart Remote, a useful clue is that basic functions may continue while Voice stops responding: the Bluetooth link may have disconnected. Restore pairing using the instructions for your TV and remote.
How to pair a supported Bluetooth Smart Remote
- Point the remote toward the TV.
- Press and hold Return and Play/Pause together for at least three seconds.
- Wait for the pairing confirmation on the TV screen.
This sequence is documented for supported Smart Remote models by Samsung Gulf and Samsung India. Button layouts and pairing steps vary by device and country, so follow the manual for your exact TV if these buttons do not work. Samsung India also notes that a Smart Remote is intended to work with one TV at a time.

Troubleshoot by the symptom
Only Voice or smart features have stopped working
On remotes that support Bluetooth, the link may have dropped even if some buttons still operate through IR. Re-pair the remote using the model-specific steps above or the TV’s manual. Samsung Canada’s LED guide explains that Bluetooth must be reconnected for features such as Voice on the remotes it covers.
The remote works only when aimed at the TV
That behavior is consistent with IR. Make sure the remote points toward the TV’s receiver and that furniture or other objects are not blocking the path. Confirm the sensor location in the manual; it is not identical on every model. Samsung’s support explanation contrasts the line-of-sight requirement for IR with Bluetooth operation.

No buttons get a response
- Check the batteries or, on a rechargeable remote, its charge state.
- For a Bluetooth Smart Remote, check pairing and follow the instructions for the model.
- For an IR remote, check line of sight and the receiver location.
- If those checks do not help, a remote, TV sensor, or other hardware fault is possible. Samsung lists battery, pairing, and sensor issues among potential causes. See Samsung’s remote troubleshooting guidance.
Check whether an IR remote emits a signal
Samsung suggests pointing a digital camera at the front of the remote and pressing a button; a visible flash can indicate IR emission. Samsung’s troubleshooting guide describes the check. Camera behavior varies, and a visible flash does not prove that the TV receiver works or that the remote sends a compatible command.
Do not confuse remote-to-TV control with other connections
IR from a remote to the TV is different from the TV controlling an external device. Samsung’s Universal Remote feature concerns compatible devices connected via HDMI; if an external device itself relies on IR, Samsung says it must be within line of sight of the TV’s IR sensor. Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) is another control route, not the Bluetooth link between a Smart Remote and the TV. Samsung’s Universal Remote guidance covers compatible external equipment.

Before replacing a remote
Match a replacement to the TV’s model code and market rather than assuming a remote will work with every Samsung set. Samsung notes that buttons and features can vary by device and country. Check the TV manual or Samsung’s model-specific support page before buying. Samsung India’s pairing guidance also notes device and country variation.
If you have a compatible SolarCell remote, Samsung says a USB-C mobile charging cable can be used to charge the supported remote. This is relevant to power, not a fix for IR line-of-sight or Bluetooth pairing issues. See Samsung’s Smart Remote troubleshooting information.
