Samsung’s PM9A3 is the best fit for most PCIe 4.0 server and cloud deployments; the PM1733a is the better choice when maximum capacity and higher random-read performance matter more than cost and density. Both are enterprise NVMe families, not consumer laptop upgrades, and their real-world suitability depends on the server’s backplane, PCIe lanes, cooling, firmware support and endurance requirement.
Which Samsung PCIe 4.0 enterprise SSD should you choose?
Choose the PM9A3 for mainstream data-center, cloud, transactional-database and content-delivery workloads. Samsung’s current catalog rates the family at up to 6,800 MB/s sequential read, 4,000 MB/s sequential write and 1,000K random-read IOPS. Choose the PM1733a for capacity-focused or exceptionally read-intensive systems: it reaches up to 7,500 MB/s sequential read, 4,100 MB/s sequential write and 1,600K random-read IOPS, with capacities up to 30.72 TB.
These are vendor specifications under Samsung’s test conditions, not independent benchmark results. Actual application performance varies with queue depth, block size, parallelism, CPU, network, operating system and storage software.

#1 Best Overall
- PM9A3 SSD 2.5 U.2 NVME GEN 4 960GB
PCIe 4.0 doubles the signaling rate of PCIe 3.0, but an application does not automatically run twice as fast. Sequential transfers benefit when the host can issue enough parallel I/O, while database and virtualization workloads often depend more on latency, queue depth, random access patterns and sustained behavior. Network bandwidth can also become the bottleneck before the drive reaches its rated throughput.
What the PM9A3 offers
Published performance
The current PM9A3 data-center listing specifies up to 6,800 MB/s sequential read, 4,000 MB/s sequential write and 1,000K random-read IOPS. Samsung’s product page for the PM9A3 U.2 960GB SKU lists up to 6,900 MB/s read and 4,100 MB/s write, illustrating why the exact capacity and form factor must be checked rather than relying on a family maximum.
Samsung’s technical article also reports up to 6,950 MB/s sequential read and 190,000 random-write IOPS for a PM9A3 configuration, plus restart times up to 50% faster than its predecessor. These are model-specific Samsung claims and should not be treated as a universal result for every PM9A3 SKU.

Reliability architecture
Samsung describes the PM9A3 as a PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD using V-NAND, enterprise power-loss protection, end-to-end data-path protection and AES-XTS 256-bit encryption. Its whitepaper lists sanitize and device-self-test functions, along with U.2, U.3, M.2, E1.S and E1.L variants. The design targets cloud services, transactional databases and large-scale CDNs.

Enterprise power-loss protection (PLP) uses dedicated hardware energy storage to give the SSD time to flush in-flight data and preserve metadata consistency when system power disappears. Without it, data acknowledged by the drive may still be in volatile memory, and an interrupted metadata update can make recovery more difficult.
PLP is a data-integrity control, not a guarantee against every failure. It does not replace redundant servers, backups, a protected power system or tested recovery procedures. Verify that the server platform supplies the conditions required by the drive and that the firmware exposes the expected protection behavior.

| Power-loss and data protection | Enterprise PLP, end-to-end data-path protection and encryption | Advanced PLP and enterprise-grade data integrity |
| Form factors | U.2, U.3, M.2, E1.S and E1.L options listed by Samsung | Confirm the exact model and chassis support |
| Best fit | Balanced performance, serviceability and broad data-center deployment | Higher read demand and maximum per-drive capacity |
Samsung’s launch material for the PM1733/PM1735 generation described capacities from 0.8 TB to 30.72 TB and endurance options of one or three drive writes per day over five years. Apply those figures only to the specified model, capacity and workload class; do not assume every PM1733a SKU carries the same DWPD rating.
What U.2, U.3, M.2, E1.S and E1.L mean for installation
U.2
U.2 is a 2.5-inch, cabled NVMe format common in server bays. It is serviceable from the front of many chassis, but the backplane, cable, connector and controller must support PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteU.3
U.3 uses a 2.5-inch drive and connector standard designed for broader NVMe/SAS/SATA backplane compatibility. A U.3 bay is not automatically compatible with every U.2 drive or every protocol; check the server and drive qualification list.

M.2
M.2 versions are compact modules intended for a supported motherboard slot or carrier. Server M.2 slots may have different keying, length limits, thermal clearance and boot-support rules than desktop slots.
E1.S and E1.L
E1.S and E1.L are Enterprise and Datacenter Standard Form Factor modules used in dense, often hot-swappable data-center designs. E1.S emphasizes shorter modules and serviceability; E1.L provides more physical space for capacity and cooling. The chassis must provide the matching carrier, power and airflow.
Compatibility checklist before buying
- Confirm the exact PM9A3 or PM1733a part number, capacity, firmware and form factor.
- Verify PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe support in the server slot, riser, backplane and host controller.
- Check U.2, U.3, M.2, E1.S or E1.L mechanical compatibility rather than relying on a generic “Gen 4” label.
- Confirm airflow, heatsinks and sustained-write thermal limits for the intended chassis.
- Check vendor qualification lists, firmware tools, secure-erase or sanitize support and boot compatibility.
- Match the drive’s DWPD rating and five-year (or stated) endurance period to the workload’s writes, not just its capacity.
- Verify warranty terms, support region and replacement procedures with the server or storage vendor.
How to compare endurance and total cost
DWPD means how many times the drive’s usable capacity can be written each day during the stated endurance period. A one-DWPD, five-year rating and a three-DWPD, five-year rating are not interchangeable, and comparing either with a rating measured over a different horizon can mislead. Use the same period, capacity basis and workload assumptions when evaluating candidates.

Current street prices, marketplace sellers and regional availability are not established here, so obtain a dated quote for the exact SKU.
Are these drives suitable for a server?
Yes, when the server platform is qualified for the specific drive. PM9A3 and PM1733a are designed for servers and data centers, with PLP, data-path integrity controls, encryption and enterprise endurance options. They are not guaranteed drop-in replacements for consumer NVMe drives: a physically similar module can still fail to enumerate, run at a lower link speed, overheat or lack firmware-management support.
Samsung states that specifications may change without notice. Before deployment, validate the exact model, firmware, backplane, cooling, operating-system support and warranty region with the server or storage supplier.
