Short answer: The Galaxy Watch5 Pro can estimate blood pressure for convenience, but it does not replace a dedicated upper-arm cuff. Samsung requires cuff-based calibration before use and again every 28 days, and describes the watch feature as non-diagnostic. For home readings used to confirm high blood pressure or monitor treatment, the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends a validated automatic upper-arm monitor with a correctly fitting cuff.
How Galaxy Watch5 Pro blood pressure monitoring works
Samsung Health Monitor estimates blood pressure from the watch after calibration against a separately purchased upper-arm cuff. Calibration requires three cuff readings within 30 minutes; Samsung requires recalibration every 28 days. The cuff is therefore still part of using the watch feature, not an optional one-time setup accessory. See Samsung’s blood pressure setup and support instructions.
Availability depends on the country, watch, phone, and software. Samsung announced a phased US rollout beginning March 31, 2026, for Galaxy Watch4 and later running Wear OS 4 or later, paired with Android 12 or later. These are not universal compatibility guarantees: check Samsung’s US rollout information and current regional requirements for your particular devices.
Preparing and positioning for a watch reading
Samsung’s instructions call for avoiding smoking, bathing, exercise, alcohol, and caffeine for at least 30 minutes before measurement. Sit quietly for at least five minutes with your back supported, feet flat, and legs uncrossed; support your forearms, keep the watch snug on the same wrist used for measurements, and remain still and silent during cuff calibration. This is a deliberate measurement procedure, not an activity-time reading.

Is the Galaxy Watch5 Pro blood pressure accurate?
Samsung reports a clinical validation study of 85 subjects in which the app was assessed 30 minutes after calibration against reference cuff measurements taken by two medical professionals. Its instructions report mean systolic error of −0.11 mmHg, with a standard deviation of 7.46 mmHg, and mean diastolic error of −0.28 mmHg, with a standard deviation of 5.85 mmHg. Samsung says the study followed a modified ISO 81060-2 protocol. These are manufacturer-reported group results; they do not mean that each individual watch result will match a cuff.
Samsung also reports performance specifications through 28 days of less than 5 ± 8 mmHg when calibration is based on auscultatory measurements, and less than 6 ± 10 mmHg when based on a cuff monitor. These are validation specifications, not a guarantee for every user or reading and not evidence that the watch can diagnose hypertension or direct treatment. The figures and intended-use limits appear in Samsung’s BP app Safety and Performance instructions.

Evidence beyond Samsung’s validation does not establish that the Watch5 Pro is equivalent to a cuff in everyday use or across people with hypertension. An indexed prospective study compared a Galaxy Watch 5—not specifically the Watch5 Pro—with a validated Omron M4 reference during the recommended calibration interval. The abstract describes a population that was predominantly young and normotensive, and says no reference measurements were taken during daily routine measurements. Those limits matter when interpreting the study; it cannot establish performance for the Pro model or for ordinary readings across a broader patient population. See the indexed Galaxy Watch 5 study record.
More broadly, the AHA’s December 2025 summary of its scientific statement on cuffless devices says wearable blood-pressure devices have not been proven accurate enough to diagnose high blood pressure or guide treatment decisions. It identifies real-world activity, sleep, medication, arm position, skin color, and time since calibration as factors that require further study. This is guidance about cuffless technologies overall, not a Watch5 Pro-specific test. Read the AHA summary.

What a dedicated upper-arm cuff does better for home monitoring
The AHA recommends an automatic cuff-style upper-arm monitor for home use. Choose a validated device and a cuff sized for your arm; a monitor’s being a cuff does not by itself ensure a dependable result. Wrist and finger devices are less reliable, according to the AHA, and a health professional or pharmacist can help if you are unsure which monitor or cuff size to choose.
Home cuff readings can help confirm a diagnosis and show whether treatment is working, but they do not replace medical visits. Do not stop medication based on home readings without consulting your healthcare professional. Follow the AHA’s home-monitoring guidance for device selection and technique.

Use careful technique with either device
For cuff readings, the AHA advises avoiding caffeine, smoking, and exercise for 30 minutes beforehand, resting quietly for at least five minutes, sitting with your back supported and feet flat, supporting your arm at heart level, and taking multiple readings. Correct cuff size and placement matter. The watch also depends on preparation and positioning, and additionally depends on calibration and a snug fit. Neither method makes careful technique irrelevant.

What FDA notices do—and do not—say about the watch
The FDA’s September 16, 2025 safety communication warns that many over-the-counter products marketed to measure or estimate blood pressure lack FDA marketing authorization and have not been evaluated by the FDA for safety and effectiveness. It advises people whose care depends on accurate readings to discuss an appropriate FDA-authorized device with a health professional. This general warning does not establish the Galaxy Watch5 Pro’s specific authorization status. See the FDA communication.
