Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag3 is about 35% smaller by volume and 33% lighter than its predecessor, according to Samsung, and adds Place Notification alerts for when a tagged item enters or leaves an area you define. It also supports core finding and sharing on supported Galaxy and iOS devices—but not every feature works on iPhone. Samsung announced it on September 30, 2026; the sales dates below are planned, not confirmed stock.
What does SmartTag3 do differently?
The most notable changes are a smaller, lighter design, cross-platform support for core finding and sharing, and Place Notification. Samsung has not provided physical dimensions in its announcement, so the size comparison is limited to its stated volume and weight figures.
Place Notification lets you define an area and receive an alert when the tagged item enters or exits it. Samsung describes the feature as a trial. Alerts rely on network-based location updates, not a continuous GPS connection; nearby participating devices, network and device settings, and surroundings affect whether and when an update arrives. Samsung also cautions that the displayed location may differ from the item’s actual location.
Does Galaxy SmartTag3 work with iPhone?
Samsung says SmartTag3 is its first Galaxy SmartTag model to support core finding and sharing across supported Galaxy and iOS devices through SmartThings Find. That does not mean the iPhone feature set matches Galaxy phones: Samsung says Compass View, Ring Phone, and Left Behind Alert are unavailable on iOS.

- Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
- Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
- Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only.
For Compass View, Samsung describes Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding as providing distance and direction guidance up to 60 meters under line-of-sight conditions, with UWB for greater precision nearby. Samsung says Compass View requires a supported Galaxy device running Android 12 or later. Its announcement lists Channel Sounding support for Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Z Fold8, S26 Ultra, and S26 Plus, with additional devices possibly supported later. Obstacles and nearby electronics can reduce range and accuracy.
How does finding work when the tag is out of Bluetooth range?
Samsung says more than 900 million participating Galaxy devices worldwide can act as finding nodes through the Galaxy Find Network. This is Samsung’s reported network figure, not an independently verified measure of current coverage in any particular place. A tag’s network location updates depend on nearby participating Galaxy devices and relevant network and device settings; timing and availability can vary with surroundings and regional conditions.

SmartTag3 also has NFC Lost Mode. After you register contact information or a short message in SmartThings, someone who scans the tag with a compatible, internet-connected device can view it. The tag’s button can trigger preset routines for compatible connected devices. Samsung says location data is encrypted and Location History is retained for up to seven days.
What are the battery and water-resistance limits?
SmartTag3 uses a replaceable CR2032 battery. Samsung estimates up to 550 days under standard usage, or up to 790 days in Power Saving Mode. These are simulated internal-laboratory estimates using a pre-release device and the included battery, not guaranteed service life; actual duration depends on use, environment, battery manufacturer, and other factors. Power Saving Mode disables some functions, including Compass View and volume and ringtone settings, leaving basic Bluetooth LE finding.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is SmartTag3 suitable for tracking a pet or recovering a stolen item?
It can help locate belongings, but its alerts and network finding are not guaranteed or continuous, so it should not be treated as a theft-recovery guarantee. Samsung warns that the tracker or its attachment could detach and pose a swallowing hazard to small children or pets. If you attach it to a pet’s collar, secure it carefully and inspect the attachment; it is not a substitute for supervising the animal.

Apple describes iPhone options to view an identifier, play a sound, and follow disabling instructions. Those general unwanted-tracker protections should not be confused with SmartTag3 finding or area-alert features.
