If you own a Galaxy S22, start with Samsung Voice Recorder. It is the native Galaxy option, and Samsung announced Galaxy AI transcription features for the S22 series. Google’s documentation lists Recorder for Pixel 3 and later phones and Pixel Tablet—not the Galaxy S22—so Google Recorder is not a documented, supported alternative for that phone. The comparison is therefore between Samsung’s S22 workflow and Google Recorder on supported Pixel devices.
Compatibility: the main difference for Galaxy S22 owners
Samsung Voice Recorder is the practical choice on a Galaxy S22. Samsung’s app supports Galaxy recording workflows, while Google’s help page identifies Pixel 3 and later phones and Pixel Tablet as supported Recorder devices. It does not list the S22. Samsung Voice Recorder on Google Play; Google Recorder device support.
That distinction matters more than a feature-by-feature score: the two apps are not interchangeable choices on the same supported hardware. If you have a Pixel as well as a Galaxy S22, you can compare their respective workflows, but Google’s support documentation does not establish the S22 as a supported Recorder device.
Recording modes and microphone options
Samsung Voice Recorder
Samsung lists general and Interview modes. General mode is intended for balanced capture, such as meetings, lectures, and voice memos. Interview mode uses the phone’s top and bottom microphones to focus on sound directed toward them, with separate playback for the two voices. The app listing also describes bookmarks, playback and file management, and an option to block calls while recording. Features can vary by device. Samsung lists the built-in microphone, Bluetooth headset, and compatible external microphone as possible inputs. A compatible USB-C smartphone lavalier microphone may help capture close speech, but check that a particular microphone works with your phone; no specific model is established here as tested or endorsed.
Google Recorder
Google’s cited guidance focuses on recording and transcription on supported Pixel devices; it does not establish a directly comparable Interview mode or the same external-microphone support claims for the Galaxy S22. In either app, microphone distance and placement, room echo, background noise, and the language being spoken can affect the result. No controlled head-to-head accuracy test establishes that one app transcribes better.

What the Galaxy S22 can do
Samsung announced on May 10, 2024, that Galaxy AI features including Transcript Assist would roll out to the Galaxy S22 series with One UI 6.1, beginning in the United States and expanding internationally. That announcement records a rollout, not proof that every S22, carrier, region, or current software build has every feature enabled. Samsung’s current US guide limits Galaxy AI Voice Recorder and Transcript Assist to select devices running Android 14 and One UI 6.1 or later; unsupported devices may not have the feature, and some languages may be unavailable. On an eligible device, Samsung’s guide describes opening a recording in Transcript Assist to transcribe or translate it, and using transcript content in Samsung Notes. Its listed languages include English (US, India, Great Britain, Australia), Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Spain, Mexico, US), Chinese (Simplified, Hong Kong), French (France, Canada), Korean, German, Italian, Japanese, Thai, Polish, Arabic, Hindi, Vietnamese, Russian, and Indonesian. Because eligibility and language support can change, check the device’s available settings and Samsung’s current guide rather than assuming a language or feature is enabled.

What Google Recorder offers on Pixel
Google’s transcription options depend on Pixel generation: the available real-time languages differ between Pixel 3–5a and Pixel 6 and later, and automatic language detection is documented for Pixel 6 and later. Transcript editing is available. Google documents summaries on Pixel 8 and later for English and Mandarin; that is not a general feature claim for every Pixel or language. For an eligible Galaxy S22 owner, Samsung is the documented route to transcription within the phone’s native recorder. For someone using a supported Pixel, Google Recorder may suit a workflow that uses its transcript editing and, on eligible Pixel 8 or later devices, its supported summaries. Neither product’s documented features justify a claim that it is universally more accurate.

Storage, privacy, and sharing
Google Recorder
Google says recordings can stay on the device or be backed up and synced to a Google Account, and backed-up recordings can be accessed through recorder.google.com. Google describes ordinary transcription as sending audio to an on-device Google service or app and discarding the audio after transcription. Re-transcription is different: Google says that action may process the recording on its servers. Google Recorder storage and transcription guidance.
Google supports sharing audio or transcripts as files, sending a transcript to Google Docs or NotebookLM, and sharing recording links. Backed-up recordings and links are private by default; anyone with a public link can access it. Separately, if a user chooses to donate recordings to help improve Google products, Google says those recordings are stored on its servers for one and a half years. Samsung Voice Recorder
Samsung’s guide describes transcript sharing and Samsung Notes workflows, but the cited documentation does not establish the processing location and retention rules for every Samsung AI recording workflow. Review the controls and notices shown on your own device before using sensitive recordings or sharing transcripts.
