Check the Galaxy Store on your phone before trying to install an APK.
What Samsung Camera Assistant does
Camera Assistant exposes extra options for Samsung’s stock Camera app. It is not a replacement camera app, a full manual-camera tool, or the same product as Expert RAW. It is associated with Good Lock Labs, while Good Lock itself is Samsung’s customization platform; Camera Assistant can be installed and opened separately. Google Play’s Good Lock listing describes the customization platform.
After installation, open the Samsung Camera app and go to Camera → Camera settings → Camera Assistant. Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra guide documents this path. The exact controls and labels can differ by model and software version.
What came with the 2022 release
When Camera Assistant was reported as a new Good Lock plugin on October 24, 2022, its announced controls included Auto HDR, picture softening, automatic lens switching, video recording in Photo mode, timer multi-photo options, faster shutter behavior, camera timeout, and clean HDMI preview. Initial coverage described availability in South Korea, not a universal Galaxy rollout. The October 2022 launch report is useful for the original release context, but its feature list should not be treated as a complete list of current options.

What the main controls change
Auto HDR and picture softening
Auto HDR controls automatic HDR processing, which Samsung says can help retain detail in bright and dark parts of photos and videos. Turning it off changes the processing approach; whether that looks better depends on the scene and your preference. Picture softening adjusts treatment of fine texture and sharp edges in Photo mode. Smoother processing may suit users who prefer less pronounced skin texture or sharpening; leaving it off generally retains a crisper, more textured look. Samsung’s S23 Ultra guide lists Off and High for softening, but choices can vary.
Auto lens switching
This setting lets the camera choose a lens based on factors such as zoom, lighting, and subject distance. Disabling automatic switching can help keep a preferred optical lens in use in some situations, but the camera may then produce a darker or noisier result or focus less reliably when conditions are poor.

Quick tap shutter and capture speed
Quick tap shutter takes the picture when you touch the shutter button rather than when you lift your finger. It can reduce the delay caused by that interaction, but may also make accidental photos more likely. Capture speed lets supported phones favor capture speed or image quality, including at high or standard resolution. Speed can help when photographing movement; prioritizing quality can allow more processing at the cost of responsiveness. Neither control guarantees a better result in every scene.
Video in Photo mode and timer shots
With video recording in Photo mode enabled, touching and holding the photo shutter starts video recording. Turn it off if that gesture often triggers unwanted clips. Timer multi-photo options let supported versions control how many shots are taken and, on some versions, the interval between them—useful for group photos, self-portraits, or tripod setups.

Timeout, dimming, and clean HDMI preview
Camera timeout determines how long the camera preview stays active; Samsung’s S23 Ultra guide lists 1-, 2-, 5-, and 10-minute choices. Some software versions also let the display dim during recording after a period without input. A longer active preview can use more power. Clean HDMI preview removes camera controls from the image sent to an HDMI-connected display, which can make the phone more suitable for monitoring or presentations.
Which Galaxy phones are listed as compatible?
Compatibility is not determined by One UI version alone. Model, camera software or firmware, regional Galaxy Store availability, and hardware capabilities can all matter. Samsung’s France support page states that Camera Assistant requires One UI 5.1 for the implementation described there and says an unavailable Galaxy Store listing means the phone is not compatible. Samsung France’s compatibility guidance is a practical check for that market.

The table below transcribes model groups on the APKMirror listing for Camera Assistant 4.5.00.20, uploaded April 15, 2026. That listing says this APK variant targets Android 16/API 36. Its compatibility breakdown is a third-party catalog reference, not a guarantee that every listed model or regional variant will be offered Camera Assistant in its Galaxy Store.

Check your own phone’s Galaxy Store listing rather than relying on a broad claim such as “all Galaxy devices.” The catalog may not reflect carrier or regional rules, camera firmware dependencies, or later Samsung changes. Samsung’s official guidance is that if the app is unavailable in the Galaxy Store, the device is not compatible.

How to install Camera Assistant
- Open the Galaxy Store on the Galaxy phone.
- Search for Camera Assistant and install the official app if it is offered for that device.
- Open the Samsung Camera app.
- Tap Camera settings → Camera Assistant.
- Adjust the controls you want to use.
Samsung’s installation guide directs users to install from the Galaxy Store and then access the settings through Camera.
If Camera Assistant is missing
- Install available updates for One UI and the Samsung Camera app.
- If you use Good Lock, update it as well; then search for Camera Assistant directly in the Galaxy Store rather than relying only on Good Lock’s module list.
- Check the exact phone model and regional firmware, since compatibility and store availability can vary.
- If you install the app, restart the phone and look under Camera → Camera settings.
- If the Galaxy Store says the app is unavailable or incompatible, do not assume an APK will make its controls work. Samsung’s support guidance treats an unavailable listing as an incompatibility signal.
Should you sideload the APK?
Sideloading was part of the early story because the 2022 release was region-limited. It should not be the default route now: use the Galaxy Store when it offers the app. An APK is tied to requirements such as package identity, signature, architecture, Android version, and device support. Even if installation succeeds, the phone’s camera framework may not support the module; an unsupported phone may reject it, crash, or install it without exposing the controls.
If you choose to use an APK archive, avoid random file-hosting sites and verify the package name, signature, version, architecture, and minimum Android requirement. The APKMirror listing identifies the package as com.samsung.android.app.cameraassistant and provides certificate and APK-variant details for the cataloged file. That information is not a blanket safety guarantee, and sideloading does not unlock Camera Assistant on every Galaxy phone. See the APKMirror listing and its variant details.
Settings to consider for common situations
- Moving children, pets, or sports: Try a faster capture preference and Quick tap shutter if the shutter interaction is costing you the moment. Check results in your own lighting before relying on it.
- Portraits or close-ups: Compare picture softening settings. Choose the rendering you prefer rather than assuming smoother or sharper is universally better.
- Low light: Keep automatic lens switching available unless you have a specific reason to hold a lens; forcing a lens can reduce exposure or focus reliability in dim conditions.
- Tripod or group photo: Use timer multi-photo options where available to capture several frames without returning to the phone between shots.
- External monitor: Enable clean HDMI preview if you want a cleaner image feed, and consider timeout and dimming behavior for longer sessions.
When to leave the defaults alone
If you prefer Samsung’s automatic lens and scene decisions, value quality-focused processing over responsiveness, or often use the long-press shutter gesture, default behavior may suit you better. Change one control at a time and compare results so it is easier to tell which setting affected the outcome.
