Samsung and Apple are taking similar but distinct routes to personalized phone AI. Both describe systems that can use a person’s device context, preferences, app information, or on-screen activity. Samsung emphasizes its Personal Data Engine (PDE), Knox protections, and user-controlled local or cloud processing. Apple emphasizes on-device foundation models, app-aware actions, and Private Cloud Compute (PCC) for requests that need more capacity. Neither company’s description means every feature sees the same data or follows the same processing path, so comparisons should be made feature by feature.
What “knowledge-centric” phone AI means
“Knowledge-centric” is a useful description, not a formal technical standard. In this context, it means an assistant can draw on information around the user—such as habits, preferences, photos, messages, app content, or what is currently on screen—to produce a more relevant answer or action.
That is different from asking a general chatbot an isolated question. A context-aware phone might summarize a day, find a photo using natural language, suggest an action inside an app, or adapt a reminder to a user’s routine. The privacy question is therefore not simply whether a phone has AI, but which data a particular feature can use, where processing occurs, what leaves the device, and what the user can control.
How Samsung personalizes Galaxy AI
Personal Data Engine and Knox protection
Samsung says the Personal Data Engine was introduced with the Galaxy S25 series. It is described as learning from habits and preferences for selected context-aware features, including Now Brief and natural-language search for photos in Gallery.

Samsung says PDE processes personal data on the device. It also describes Knox Enhanced Encrypted Protection (KEEP) as a dedicated protected space for individual supported apps and features, including PDE, Smart Suggestions, and Now Brief. Samsung’s Global Newsroom states: “The Personal Data Engine functions when the Personal Data Intelligence menu is on. Analyzed data will be deleted once the Personal Data Intelligence menu is turned off.” That is Samsung’s stated behavior for the menu, not an independent audit of every feature.
Local and cloud processing
Samsung provides a setting that lets users choose whether Galaxy AI data is processed locally or in the cloud. Its support guidance separates some on-device functions from cloud-dependent ones, while warning that the details vary by device and software version.

Samsung’s current Galaxy AI examples also include Now Nudge suggestions, health insights, natural-language device assistance, writing tools, and creative image features. A local-only choice may limit functions that require Samsung or partner cloud infrastructure; it does not make every Galaxy AI capability available offline.

How Apple personalizes Apple Intelligence
On-device context and app actions
Apple describes Apple Intelligence as a personal intelligence system with context understanding, app actions, and on-screen awareness. Apple’s developer documentation says App Intents can expose app content through a semantic index and let people invoke supported app actions with natural language.
This does not mean every app or personal data store is automatically visible to every model. An app must provide the relevant integration, and the available action depends on what the developer exposes.
On-device models and Private Cloud Compute
Apple says many Apple Intelligence requests run entirely on the iPhone. For more complex requests, the system can use Private Cloud Compute. Apple states that only data relevant to the request is processed, that the data is not retained after the response, and that it is not accessible to Apple.

Apple describes PCC as using Secure Enclave technology, Secure Boot, signed and verified code, device attestation of the PCC cluster, and server software that independent researchers can inspect. These are Apple’s published architecture and privacy commitments; the available material does not establish an independent audit of every real-world request.

Apple Security Research says PCC is expanding beyond Apple data centers to Google Cloud systems using NVIDIA GPUs for new workloads, including agentic tool use and complex reasoning. Apple says the expansion retains PCC privacy protections. This is a change in infrastructure and partner involvement, not a statement that PCC protections have been abandoned.

What security and privacy claims do—and do not—prove
Samsung’s PDE and KEEP materials center on protected, on-device personalization for supported Galaxy experiences. Apple’s materials center on local models plus a controlled cloud inference system with stated technical safeguards. Those emphases do not prove that one platform has broader knowledge access, better accuracy, or stronger privacy for every task.

No comparative study in the cited company materials measures Samsung versus Apple on privacy, performance, accuracy, or adoption. Terms such as “secure,” “private,” and “not accessible” should therefore be read as the respective company’s commitments and architecture descriptions, not as a head-to-head independent result.

Apple’s documented route
Apple provides a native Swift Foundation Models framework for using Apple foundation models on-device and in PCC, along with integration and evaluation tools. App Intents can make supported app content discoverable through semantic indexing and expose actions that users can request in natural language.
Samsung’s documented route
Samsung’s published descriptions focus on Galaxy AI features, PDE, Smart Suggestions, Now Brief, and supported Samsung or partner experiences. The documentation does not establish that arbitrary third-party app data is automatically available to PDE or to every Galaxy AI model.

Eligibility, language, and network checks
Personalized AI is constrained by the phone, software build, language, region, account status, and network connection. Check the individual feature rather than relying on a family name.
- Samsung: Samsung lists Galaxy S26 family models among phones ready for Galaxy AI, but requirements differ by feature. Some capabilities need a network connection, and local/cloud behavior can change with software updates.
- Apple: Apple’s current support guidance for iOS 27 or later identifies iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later as the supported family. Availability varies by language and region; PCC is unavailable in some regions, and some server-dependent features have daily usage limits.
- Before relying on a feature: Confirm the exact model, operating-system version, language, country, account requirement, and whether the task works offline.
Which approach fits a particular priority?
If local processing is your priority
On Samsung, enable the available local-processing option and verify that the specific feature supports it. On Apple, choose features documented as on-device, while recognizing that complex requests may be routed to PCC.
If app automation matters most
Apple has the clearer published developer model through App Intents, semantic indexing, and the Foundation Models framework. Actual usefulness still depends on whether the apps you use implement those interfaces.

Compare the exact phone and software version in your country. Both companies qualify availability by device, language, region, and network, and neither brand name alone guarantees access to every advertised AI function.
Bottom line for phone buyers
Samsung and Apple both treat personal context as a way to make phone assistance more useful, but they expose different parts of the architecture. Samsung foregrounds PDE, Knox-protected personalization, and a user-facing local/cloud choice. Apple foregrounds on-device intelligence, app-aware actions, and PCC for harder requests. The practical decision is not which slogan sounds safer; it is whether the particular feature you want has the data access, processing route, controls, and regional support you require.
