The Samsung 9100 PRO is substantially faster than the 990 PRO only when it runs in a PCIe 5.0 x4 slot and the workload can use that bandwidth. Large sequential transfers and professional project files benefit most. Windows, games, and office applications usually show much smaller gains, and a 9100 PRO installed in a PCIe 4.0 slot loses its headline advantage.
Quick verdict
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Which drive has the higher peak speed? | The 9100 PRO: Samsung rates it at up to 14,800 MB/s read and 13,400 MB/s write. The 990 PRO is a PCIe 4.0 drive rated at roughly 7,450 MB/s sequential read. |
| What hardware is required? | A motherboard M.2 slot that provides PCIe 5.0 x4. In a PCIe 4.0 slot, the 9100 PRO negotiates down to the older bus speed. |
| Will games load twice as fast? | No. Game and Windows workloads are commonly limited by single-queue I/O, CPU work, and decompression, so the practical difference is usually small. |
| Who should buy the 9100 PRO? | People who repeatedly read or write very large video, photo, AI, engineering, or game-development files and have a Gen5 platform. |
| Who should buy the 990 PRO? | Most PCIe 4.0 systems, gaming PCs, office machines, and buyers for whom the 9100 PRO premium is not justified by their workload. |
Samsung announced the 9100 PRO on February 26, 2025, with availability beginning March 18, 2025. It is a PCIe 5.0 x4, NVMe 2.0 M.2 2280 SSD using Samsung V-NAND TLC. The 990 PRO remains a PCIe 4.0 x4 model.
Interface generation determines the ceiling
PCIe is the first question to answer because it sets the maximum path between the SSD and the processor. The 9100 PRO has four PCIe 5.0 lanes; the 990 PRO has four PCIe 4.0 lanes. A Gen5 x4 connection offers roughly twice the signaling bandwidth of Gen4 x4, which is why the 9100 PRO can advertise nearly double the sequential throughput.
The 9100 PRO is backward-compatible with PCIe 4.0 systems, but compatibility is not the same as performance. When the drive detects a Gen4 slot, it runs at that slot’s limit. ComputerBase’s controlled testing found that the 9100 PRO’s sequential results fell to the same interface ceiling as the 990 PRO when both were operating over PCIe 4.0. Buying the Gen5 model for a Gen4 computer therefore makes sense only for extra capacity, a planned platform upgrade, or a measured benefit in a particular single-queue workload.

Check the motherboard manual rather than assuming every M.2 socket is Gen5. The slot must be wired for PCIe 5.0 x4, and the platform must provide the required CPU or chipset lanes. If the manual lists only PCIe 4.0 for the socket, a 9100 PRO will work but cannot deliver its 14,800/13,400 MB/s specification.
Peak sequential performance: where the 9100 PRO wins clearly
Samsung’s published maximums are up to 14,800 MB/s sequential read and 13,400 MB/s sequential write for the 9100 PRO. Samsung describes that as twice the interface-level speed of its previous-generation class. The 990 PRO is specified at approximately 7,450 MB/s sequential read; its exact write figure is not stated in the specifications cited here.
Independent testing confirms the scale of the difference under a Gen5 connection. In a March 29, 2025 ComputerBase comparison using CrystalDiskMark, the 9100 PRO reached 14,741 MB/s sequential read and 13,437 MB/s sequential write at PCIe 5.0 x4. Those numbers are close to Samsung’s limits and nearly double the 990 PRO class in sequential transfers.
| Measurement | 9100 PRO at PCIe 5.0 x4 | 9100 PRO at PCIe 4.0 x4 | 990 PRO | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung sequential read rating | Up to 14,800 MB/s | Bus-limited | Approximately 7,450 MB/s | Gen5 is required for the 9100 PRO’s headline read speed. |
| Samsung sequential write rating | Up to 13,400 MB/s | Bus-limited | Not stated in the cited specifications | Large writes benefit only when the host can sustain Gen5 bandwidth. |
| ComputerBase CrystalDiskMark read | 14,741 MB/s | Fell to the PCIe 4.0 ceiling | PCIe 4.0-class result | The slot, not just the SSD, controls peak throughput. |
| ComputerBase CrystalDiskMark write | 13,437 MB/s | Fell to the PCIe 4.0 ceiling | PCIe 4.0-class result | Gen5 sustained writes need both a Gen5 slot and adequate cooling. |
These are sequential benchmark results: long, contiguous transfers with enough outstanding work to keep the controller busy. They are useful for copying a large disk image or media cache, but they do not predict every application launch or game load.
Random and single-queue work is much closer
Everyday software often issues small requests at a queue depth of one or a similarly low level. ComputerBase found that random-read differences between the drives were scarcely noticeable, even though the 9100 PRO was dramatically ahead in sequential testing. In the same testing, the 9100 PRO forced to PCIe 4.0 was still about 50% faster than the 990 PRO in a practical single-queue sequential-read test, but random reads showed little separation.

Samsung rates the 9100 PRO for up to 2,200K random-read IOPS and 2,600K random-write IOPS. Those are vendor specifications measured under Samsung’s stated conditions; firmware, queue depth, thermals, and the host system change the result. They should not be read as a promise that a desktop will perform 2.6 million small writes during normal use.
The distinction explains why a benchmark chart can show a near-twofold advantage while a Windows desktop feels almost unchanged. File Explorer, many installers, and numerous game engines do not maintain the high queue depths used by synthetic tests. PCWorld noted that Windows Explorer generally uses a single queue, which limits the benefit of the 9100 PRO’s high-queue-depth capability.

PCWorld tested a 4TB 9100 PRO and found that it aced synthetic sequential benchmarks, yet real-world transfers were separated by seconds rather than by a factor of two. In its 48GB transfer, the 9100 PRO finished about two seconds behind the fastest PCIe 5.0 competitors. In a 450GB write, it took 146 seconds, which was 16 seconds, or 11%, behind the fastest result in that test.
Those results put the headline bandwidth in perspective. A large transfer can finish sooner on the 9100 PRO than on a 990 PRO, but the actual saving depends on the source drive, destination drive, file mix, operating-system cache, controller behavior, and whether the transfer is sustained long enough to fill the available bandwidth. A fast source or a slower destination can erase much of the SSD-to-SSD difference.
PCWorld reviewer Jon L. Jacobi summarized the condition precisely: “In the right system with the right software, the 9100 Pro will run rings around the competition.” The qualification matters: the right system means a Gen5 connection and cooling, while the right software means a workload capable of issuing enough parallel I/O.

Windows, office work, and gaming
ComputerBase’s PCMark 10 storage test, which represents office-style activity, showed only a 3% uplift for the 9100 PRO in PCIe 5.0 mode compared with its own PCIe 4.0 run. Interestingly, the 9100 PRO operating in PCIe 4.0 mode was 17% ahead of the 990 PRO in that test. That result demonstrates that firmware, controller behavior, and workload details can matter even when the bus generation is the same.

For normal office applications, browsers, coding tools, and general Windows responsiveness, both drives are already very fast. The 9100 PRO may reduce the time for a particularly large project to open or save, but it is unlikely to make typing, browsing, or launching a small application feel twice as quick.
Gaming shows the same pattern. Game loading involves many small reads plus CPU decompression and asset preparation. The 9100 PRO can improve the storage portion of a load, but the total screen-to-play time is not determined by sequential SSD bandwidth alone. TechRadar therefore positions the 9100 PRO toward professionals who save very large files and says gamers seeking faster load times may find better value in a less expensive drive. There is no evidence here of a universal game-loading-time multiplier, so claims of twice-as-fast game loads should be treated skeptically.
Sustained writes, power, and thermal behavior
Large writes are the workload most likely to expose a Gen5 SSD’s advantages and its limits. A 450GB transfer is long enough to test more than a short burst, yet the PCWorld result still trailed the fastest competing Gen5 drive by 11%. The 9100 PRO is therefore a strong large-file performer, not an automatic winner in every sustained-write comparison.
Samsung claims up to 49% improved power efficiency versus the predecessor. That is a vendor claim under stated test conditions, not a guarantee of a fixed wattage or temperature in every computer. Motherboard firmware, airflow, workload duration, and the particular heatsink change thermal behavior.

TechRadar tested a 4TB 9100 PRO on an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X and X870E platform using the motherboard’s cooling. Samsung and the independent reviewers both emphasize that the host system affects temperatures. A drive that is cool in a well-ventilated desktop can run hotter in a compact case with restricted airflow.
Capacities and launch pricing
The 9100 PRO range runs from 1TB through 8TB. Samsung’s official launch MSRPs for the versions listed below were announced in February 2025; street prices vary by country, retailer, tax, and date. Heatsink models were priced $20 above the corresponding bare-drive version.
| 9100 PRO capacity | Bare-drive launch MSRP | Heatsink launch MSRP | Availability of a stated price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1TB | $199.99 | $219.99 | Samsung Electronics announcement, 2025 |
| 2TB | $299.99 | $319.99 | Samsung Electronics announcement, 2025 |

| 8TB | Not stated in the cited announcement | Not stated in the cited announcement | Capacity announced; launch MSRP not stated |
| 990 PRO | Not stated in the cited specifications | Not stated in the cited specifications | Compare the current price in your region before buying |
Because the 990 PRO’s price is not established by the specifications cited here, the value decision must use the actual price you see rather than an assumed percentage premium. If a discounted 990 PRO delivers the capacity you need, its Gen4 performance is already near the practical limit of that interface.

Choose the 9100 PRO for large professional projects
Video editors, photographers, AI practitioners, engineers, and game developers who repeatedly move very large source files, project directories, simulations, or build artifacts are the clearest 9100 PRO audience. A Gen5 slot lets long sequential reads and writes approach 14 GB/s in controlled testing, reducing transfer time when the rest of the storage pipeline is equally capable.

Capacity can be as important as speed. A 4TB 9100 PRO may be preferable to a smaller drive that forces active projects onto a slower disk. TechRadar’s 4TB test also means its comparisons with mostly 2TB competitors are not perfectly like-for-like; the extra capacity can influence how a professional evaluates the purchase.

Choose the 990 PRO for a PCIe 4.0 computer
If the motherboard offers PCIe 4.0 but not PCIe 5.0, the 990 PRO is normally the rational performance choice. The 9100 PRO cannot use its extra bus bandwidth in that machine, and ComputerBase measured Gen4-mode sequential results at the same interface ceiling as the 990 PRO. Pay extra for the 9100 PRO in a Gen4 system only when you specifically want its capacity, expect to move the drive into a future Gen5 platform, or have verified a benefit in your own single-queue workload.
Choose the 990 PRO for gaming and general use when prices favor it
Both models provide fast boot, application, and game storage. The 9100 PRO’s synthetic lead does not automatically translate into a visibly shorter game load, while a price difference is certain to affect the rest of a build. Put the saved budget toward capacity, memory, or graphics hardware unless your games routinely stream exceptionally large assets and your own measurements show a meaningful improvement.
Use the 9100 PRO when upgrade headroom has value
A Gen5 drive can be a deliberate platform investment. Buying it now for a Gen5 motherboard leaves room for future software that issues more parallel I/O, but that is potential rather than a present-day guarantee. On a Gen4 system, the same purchase is effectively a Gen4 drive until the platform changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInstallation and compatibility checklist
- Identify the M.2 slot. Read the motherboard manual and confirm that the socket supports PCIe 5.0 x4 if you want 9100 PRO Gen5 performance. Do not rely on the motherboard’s marketing name alone.
- Check the platform lanes. Confirm that the socket is connected through the CPU or chipset as specified by the manual and that the slot is not limited to PCIe 4.0.
- Plan cooling before installation. Use the motherboard’s M.2 heatsink when it provides adequate contact and airflow, or buy the 9100 PRO heatsink version when the board has no suitable cover.
- Install the M.2 2280 drive. Power down, fit the module at the socket’s standoff, secure it with the board’s retaining mechanism, and reinstall the heatsink without trapping its thermal pad film.
- Verify the negotiated link. After booting, use the motherboard’s firmware information or the operating system’s storage utility to confirm that the drive is negotiating PCIe 5.0 x4. A Gen4 link indicates a slot, firmware, or platform limitation rather than a defective SSD.
- Test the workload you care about. Copy a representative project or run the application workflow that matters to you. Synthetic results alone cannot predict a single-queue game load or an Explorer copy.
Do you need the heatsink model?
Buy the heatsink version when the motherboard lacks effective M.2 cooling, the case has limited airflow, or the SSD will perform long sequential writes. The extra $20 at launch purchased an integrated thermal solution, not additional NAND capacity or a higher rated interface.
Use the motherboard heatsink instead when it makes firm contact with the SSD and the chassis has reasonable airflow. Avoid stacking the drive’s heatsink under another cover unless the motherboard documentation explicitly supports that arrangement; excess thickness can prevent proper contact or mechanical fit.
Neither version guarantees a specific temperature. The controller’s workload, ambient temperature, airflow, motherboard heatsink design, and firmware all affect throttling behavior. For short desktop tasks, the bare drive under a competent motherboard cover is usually sufficient; for repeated multi-hundred-gigabyte writes, cooling deserves more attention.
Decision matrix
| Your situation | Preferred drive | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| PCIe 5.0 x4 motherboard; frequent very-large transfers | 9100 PRO | Uses the Gen5 bus and delivers the highest sequential throughput. |
| PCIe 5.0 x4 motherboard; mostly games and office apps | 990 PRO or the less expensive suitable option | Low-queue workloads rarely expose the 9100 PRO’s peak advantage. |
| PCIe 4.0 x4 motherboard | 990 PRO | The 9100 PRO is bus-limited and reaches the same interface ceiling. |
| Gen4 system today, planned Gen5 upgrade soon | 9100 PRO if capacity and price justify it | It can move to the future platform, but current performance remains Gen4-limited. |
| Long writes in a poorly ventilated case | 9100 PRO with adequate heatsink, or 990 PRO if Gen5 is unnecessary | Cooling and sustained behavior matter more than a peak benchmark number. |
| Budget-sensitive build where both drives meet capacity needs | Whichever is cheaper after checking current prices | The 990 PRO is already a fast Gen4 SSD, while the 9100 PRO premium may not improve daily use. |
Bottom line by use case
The 9100 PRO is the faster SSD in the narrow, measurable sense: on PCIe 5.0 x4 it nearly doubles the 990 PRO’s sequential bandwidth, and controlled testing reaches 14,741 MB/s read and 13,437 MB/s write. Its advantage becomes useful when very large files and sufficiently parallel software keep the drive busy.
