Its career materials describe software engineering work and use MTS, SMTS, and LMTS in employee spotlights, but do not publish a company-wide leveling chart. To compare opportunities, look at the actual requisition’s responsibilities, qualifications, team, location, and compensation terms—not the title alone.
What do these titles mean at Salesforce?
Software Engineer
Salesforce describes its software engineers as building high-performing, high-quality products with significant, measurable impact for customers and users. That describes the work, but the public career page does not map the generic title to a particular internal level. Salesforce Tech & Product Careers
Member of Technical Staff titles
The same career page identifies employees as Software Engineering MTS, Software Engineering SMTS, and Software Engineering LMTS. These examples establish that Salesforce uses the title variants; employee spotlights do not define them formally or prove a fixed progression between them.
Is SMTS a senior level, and is it equivalent to Software Engineer?
The word “Senior” signals seniority in the SMTS title, but Salesforce’s public materials do not specify a universal level conversion between SMTS and Software Engineer. They also do not establish a company-wide sequence, experience threshold, or standard duties for each title. A specific opening may clarify its scope, but the title by itself cannot establish how it maps to another Salesforce title or internal level.

How can you compare actual Salesforce openings?
Read the responsibilities and qualifications side by side. A senior DevOps-focused posting published January 23, 2026, describes architecture and implementation of large-scale platforms, technical strategy, complex migrations, reliability work, mentoring, and cross-functional leadership. Those responsibilities illustrate that particular role; they are not a company-wide SMTS rubric. Salesforce Senior Software Engineer – DevOps focus posting
| Compare | What to look for in the requisition |
|---|---|
| Problem scope | How broad or ambiguous the engineering problems are, and whether the work concerns a component, a platform, or multiple systems. |
| Ownership | Whether the role owns work from design through delivery and operation, or focuses on a narrower stage. |
| Technical direction | Whether the engineer contributes to implementation decisions, sets architecture, or shapes technical strategy. |
| Influence and leadership | Whether the role coordinates across teams, mentors colleagues, or leads work without formal people-management responsibilities. |
| Qualifications | The experience and skills the specific team requests. Do not assume a universal years-of-experience cutoff from either title. |
| Location and compensation | The location, applicable job level, and compensation terms attached to that opening. |
Ask the recruiter which internal level applies to the requisition and whether the posted title represents a company level, an engineering discipline, or an external-facing job label. That is the clearest way to resolve a title comparison for a particular opportunity.

Do the titles establish a pay difference?
No comparable public pay data for Software Engineer and SMTS title labels is provided by the sources cited here. Salesforce’s DevOps-focused posting says U.S. compensation depends on location, job level, job-related knowledge, and experience; it does not establish a pay premium for either title. Compare compensation details for the specific openings and locations rather than infer a difference from the title.
