If you want to learn probability and follow current events without buying or selling event-contract shares, try a forecasting platform that asks you to submit numerical probabilities and gives feedback when questions resolve. Metaculus and Good Judgment Open offer ways to practice; neither turns a crowd forecast into a guarantee. You can also practice offline with a class or study group.

What makes a forecasting alternative safer?

The key difference is whether you are making a forecast or taking a financial position. On a forecasting platform, you submit an estimate of how likely an event is. In an event-contract market, you buy or sell a contract whose value depends on an outcome, so you can lose money. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) describes event contracts as financial products used for hedging or speculation and warns that speculation carries financial risk: CFTC: Event Contracts.

The CFTC’s explanation concerns regulated U.S. markets; it is not a complete guide to every jurisdiction or platform. If legal access matters, check current local rules and official regulator information. The CFTC advises customers to understand contract rules, risks, fees, settlement terms, and the provider’s identity and registration status. Do not assume that every event-contract platform is safe, legal everywhere, or equivalent to gambling.

Where can you practice forecasting without trading?

Metaculus

Metaculus describes itself as an online forecasting platform and aggregation engine. Participants submit precise probabilities in response to questions, and Metaculus aggregates forecasts using a recency-weighted median. When a question resolves, forecasts receive scores. Its FAQ distinguishes this approach from prediction markets, where participants generally buy or sell shares using real or virtual currency. See Metaculus’s FAQ.

Metaculus also runs tournaments. Some offer cash prizes or medals, so check the terms of the specific event rather than assuming every activity is prize-free. The platform reports scoring in the 99.5th percentile of the ACX prediction tournament in 2023 and the 97.7th percentile in 2024; those are Metaculus’s reported results, not independent assessments. Its explanation is at Metaculus’s forecasting notebooks.

Good Judgment Open

Offline or classroom practice

A teacher or study group can practice the same forecasting loop without a trading platform. This approach follows the general practices described in Metaculus’s forecasting guidance; it should not be read as a claim that a particular classroom intervention has been experimentally validated.

  1. Write a specific question with clear criteria for what counts as the outcome, a time horizon, and a source for resolving it.
  2. Have each participant privately record a numerical probability, a short rationale, and the date of the estimate.
  3. Preserve the estimates so later discussion does not change what people originally predicted.
  4. When the event’s outcome is known, resolve the question against the source you chose and compare the forecasts with the result.
  5. Review the reasoning, including what evidence was missed and what assumptions held up.

How to make a forecast useful for learning

Choose questions that can be resolved

A forecast is only useful to evaluate if the question makes clear what outcomes count, when the forecast applies, and how the answer will be determined. Metaculus says its questions are specified so participants can understand which outcomes qualify. Before forecasting, read the resolution criteria and information cutoff rather than relying on the headline alone.

Use probabilities, not just confident-sounding predictions

Record a number such as 30% or 70%, rather than only saying an event is “unlikely” or “likely.” Metaculus describes forecasting as “a systematic practice of attempting to answer questions about future events.” It also says that when its forecast is 70% likely, the event occurs roughly 70% of the time. That is the platform’s calibration illustration, not a promise about an individual question or an independently verified result for each forecaster.

Look for base rates and ways you could be wrong

Before letting a vivid breaking-news story dominate your estimate, look for a relevant comparison class or base rate: how often have similar events happened? For a complex question, break it into smaller parts. Metaculus’s learning resources recommend considering alternatives, listing reasons a forecast might be wrong, asking a devil’s advocate to challenge group reasoning, seeking feedback, and treating that feedback as information. Its guidance is available at Metaculus Learn.

Return after resolution

Compare the resolved outcome with both your probability and your original reasoning. Look at successes as well as mistakes: a correct outcome does not necessarily mean the reasoning was sound, and a wrong outcome does not by itself prove the estimate was unreasonable. Metaculus says steady quantitative feedback and regular practice can improve accuracy; that is the platform’s claim, not an independently measured effect size for an individual learner.

When an event-contract market is different

The CFTC describes event contracts as financial contracts often structured around a yes-or-no outcome, a fixed payout, and an expiration. A contract price reflects traders’ perceived likelihood, but it is not simply a classroom probability exercise: participants can receive a payout if correct and lose their investment if wrong, while fees and taxes can affect returns. The CFTC states, “All speculation involves risk.” Its page also says prediction markets have existed in the United States since 1988 and have been regulated by the CFTC since 2004; these are dates stated by the regulator on its current page, not a guide to the status of every market today.

A simple beginner routine

  1. Pick one specific, resolvable question on a forecasting platform or write one for a study group.
  2. Note the date and evidence available to you at the time.
  3. Find a relevant base rate or comparison class before focusing on the latest headline.
  4. Submit or record a numerical probability and write the strongest reason your forecast could be wrong.
  5. After resolution, review the score or compare the estimate with the outcome and revisit your reasoning.
