“NB” and “SB” do not have one universal safe temperature range. In a computer context they usually mean northbridge and southbridge chipsets, whose limits depend on the exact motherboard, chipset, sensor and cooling design. In health information, “NB” commonly means newborn: the World Health Organization classifies a measured newborn temperature of 36.5–37.5 °C as normal, while a temperature of 38.0 °C or higher in an infant 3 months or younger needs prompt pediatric assessment.
Identify what “NB” and “SB” mean first
The same abbreviations are used in unrelated fields, so applying the wrong threshold can be dangerous or damage hardware.
| Context | Meaning | How temperature limits are established |
|---|---|---|
| Motherboard troubleshooting | NB = northbridge; SB = southbridge | Use the specific chipset and motherboard manufacturer’s operating or junction-temperature specification. There is no defensible universal NB/SB number. |
| Clinical care | NB = newborn | Use the baby’s age, measurement site and clinical guidance. WHO newborn-care training provides temperature bands; the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) uses a fever threshold of 38 °C (100.4 °F) for young infants. |
| Other technical or commercial uses | NB may identify a manufacturer’s product line; SB can refer to a safety-footwear category | Limits are product- or category-specific. For example, NB Corporation’s linear-system products have model- and material-specific temperature limits, not a generic “NB” range. |
If NB means a newborn’s temperature
WHO newborn-care training classifies a measured baby temperature as follows:
| Measured temperature | WHO classification | Action in the WHO training material |
|---|---|---|
| 36.5–37.5 °C | Normal | Maintain normal thermal care. |
| 35.5–36.4 °C | Below the normal band | Improve thermal care and observe carefully. |
| 37.6–38.0 °C | Above the normal band | Improve thermal care and observe carefully. |
| Below 35.5 °C or above 38.0 °C | Danger sign | Treat and refer according to the newborn-care protocol. |
WHO describes an axillary (armpit) newborn temperature as usually 36.5–37.5 °C and says readings outside that band need careful observation. The measurement site matters, so do not compare an armpit reading directly with a rectal, oral or ear reading without clinical advice.

Why exactly 38.0 °C needs special attention
The WHO table places 38.0 °C in its upper “improve thermal care” band, while the AAP considers 100.4 °F (38 °C) or higher a fever for otherwise well-appearing infants 8–60 days old. AAP parent guidance says a temperature of 38 °C or higher in a baby 3 months or younger warrants prompt pediatric assessment. Therefore, treat an exact 38.0 °C reading in a young infant as a reason to contact a clinician promptly rather than waiting for it to rise further; follow the clinician’s instructions for the measurement method and repeat reading.
How common is fever in this age group?
The AAP’s 2026 infant-fever page quotes a figure of 14 out of every 1,000 healthy full-term infants developing a fever between 8 and 60 days old. That statistic describes the population cited by the AAP; it does not make a fever safer for an individual baby.

When a reading may be unreliable
- Confirm which thermometer site was used and follow its instructions.
- Repeat an unexpected result with the method recommended by the baby’s clinician rather than mixing sites.
- Seek urgent medical help for a baby who is difficult to wake, breathing abnormally, feeding poorly, unusually cold, or otherwise looks ill, regardless of a single numerical reading.
If NB and SB mean motherboard chipsets
There is no single safe northbridge or southbridge temperature that applies across all generations. Chipset design, motherboard sensors, heatsinks or fans, case airflow, room temperature, applied voltage and firmware readings can all change the result. A label such as “NB” or “SB” may also be an unverified board-sensor name rather than a calibrated on-die measurement.
What to compare for a defensible hardware assessment
| Comparison | Why it matters | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer limit | The relevant ceiling is model-specific. | The motherboard manual or chipset technical specification’s maximum operating or junction temperature; a universal value is not established. |
| Sensor location | A socket or board sensor may not measure the hottest silicon point. | The exact monitoring label and whether it is an on-die sensor, a board sensor or an unknown source. |
| Workload | Brief idle and sustained-load temperatures answer different questions. | Idle value, stabilized value during the intended workload and how long the load was maintained. |
| Environment | Chipset temperature tracks the heat entering and leaving the case. | Ambient room temperature, case airflow and whether nearby graphics-card or VRM heat is affecting the sensor. |
| Electrical settings | Extra voltage and overclocking can increase chipset heat. | Stock or modified voltage, clock settings and any overclocking profile. |
Procedure for checking a motherboard reading
- Write down the exact motherboard model, revision and chipset generation.
- Open the board’s manual or technical specification and locate the manufacturer’s maximum operating or junction-temperature information for that chipset.
- Identify what the monitoring software actually calls “NB” and “SB,” including whether the label refers to a chipset, a socket or an auxiliary board sensor.
- Record temperatures at idle and after a sustained workload, along with ambient temperature, fan operation and voltage settings.
- Compare the readings with the manufacturer’s documented limit, not with a number copied from another chipset or from a newborn-care chart.
What information is needed for a model-specific answer?
Provide the motherboard make and full model (including revision), chipset, BIOS or monitoring-software sensor labels, idle and sustained-load readings, ambient temperature, and any changed voltage or overclocking settings. With those details, the relevant manufacturer limit and the credibility of the sensor can be assessed separately.
