For a gaming-focused build, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the X3D option to consider if current independent tests show a meaningful gain in the games you play and its local price fits your budget. The Ryzen 7 9700X is the lower-default-TDP alternative, with a higher advertised maximum boost clock; that clock figure alone does not establish gaming performance. The right choice depends on your games, graphics card and resolution, current CPU prices, and the full cost of the platform.

Ryzen 7 9700X vs. Ryzen 7 9800X3D: what differs?

Both are Zen 5 desktop processors for AMD’s AM5 platform, with 8 cores and 16 threads. Their headline distinction is cache: AMD lists 104 MB total cache for the 9800X3D and 40 MB for the 9700X in its Ryzen 9000 lineup table. Those totals combine L2 and L3; the individual product pages specify 96 MB L3 on the 9800X3D and 32 MB L3 on the 9700X, with 8 MB L2 on each.

TDP is a processor specification, not a direct measurement of wall power or of what your cooling setup will cost. Likewise, the higher advertised boost clock of the 9700X does not by itself show which CPU will deliver higher frame rates. AMD lists DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0 support for both processors; check the exact motherboard model and BIOS support before planning a build or drop-in upgrade. Which one should you buy for gaming?

Choose the 9800X3D if gaming is the priority and the premium is justified

The 9800X3D is the X3D candidate to compare when gaming is your main use. Its larger L3 cache is the defining specification difference, but specifications alone cannot establish how much faster it will be in a particular game or whether the price premium is worthwhile. Compare independent tests for the games you actually play, using a graphics card, resolution, and settings close to your own. Then compare the current local prices of both CPUs.

AMD RYZEN 7 9800X3D 8-Core, 16-Thread Desktop Processor
  • The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
  • 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
  • 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
  • Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
  • Cooler not included

AMD describes the processor as offering “faster gaming with 2nd gen AMD 3D V-Cache™ technology for low latency.” That is AMD product-page copy, not an independent benchmark. AMD also publishes gaming tests for the 9800X3D; the results are from AMD Performance Labs in October 2024 and apply to the stated test systems and selected games. They are useful as vendor testing, but not a universal prediction for every GPU, resolution, game, or configuration. AMD’s 9800X3D launch announcement and test notes.

Choose the 9700X if its price and platform trade-offs suit your build

The 9700X has a lower default TDP and higher advertised maximum boost clock than the 9800X3D. Those are reasons to weigh it as the conventional Ryzen alternative, not proof that it will be faster, cooler in every workload, or cheaper to own in every configuration. Check independent head-to-head results and the cooler required for your own system before deciding.

Be especially careful with GPU-limited or high-resolution setups

If your target resolution and settings put most of the workload on the graphics card, do not assume a CPU upgrade will produce a visible gaming gain. Look for comparisons at your intended resolution and with a similar GPU. The evidence cited here does not establish a performance advantage for every resolution or graphics-card pairing.

How to compare the real cost of the build

Compare the complete platform cost rather than the CPU sticker price alone. Include the processor, a compatible AM5 motherboard and its required firmware support, DDR5 memory if you are building new, and a separately purchased cooler. AMD recommends a liquid cooler for optimal 9800X3D performance and a premium air cooler for optimal 9700X performance; neither boxed CPU includes a thermal solution. Cooler fit, noise, case clearance, and price depend on the rest of the build.

What if gaming is only part of the workload?

For gaming mixed with heavily threaded creator or production work, AMD’s Ryzen 9000 family also includes the 12-core/24-thread Ryzen 9 9900X3D and 16-core/32-thread Ryzen 9 9950X3D. Their extra cores may matter when those other tasks need them; the specifications cited here do not establish that the additional cores justify their cost for gaming alone.
