If modded DLSS 5 neural rendering is the reason you are buying a Radeon card, choose an RX 9000 model, with the Radeon RX 9070 XT the clearest documented target. RX 7000 cards are listed as compatible with the unofficial project, but the available reports indicate substantially lower neural-rendering performance and less hardware headroom on RDNA3.
An RX 7000 card still makes sense when your actual priority is conventional FSR 3.1.5 upscaling and frame generation at a lower acquisition cost. The distinction is important: “compatible” means the mod can load, not that both generations deliver comparable frame rates, image quality, or upgrade life.
What the mod supports
The project documentation describes a ground-up reimplementation of DLSS neural-network runtimes for AMD architectures. Its compatibility statement covers “AMD Radeon RX 9000 (RDNA4), 7000 (RDNA3) and 6000 (RDNA2) cards” in DirectX 12 games that use FSR, DLSS or XeSS. That is broader than official AMD support for the underlying neural-rendering technology, because the project supplies its own translation and integration layer rather than using NVIDIA’s runtime.
Version 0.8.0 lists DLSS Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, Frame Generation and Neural Rendering as working on RDNA4 and RDNA3. RDNA2 remains in testing, so an RX 6000 card should not be treated as an equal alternative merely because the README names it. The project is unaffiliated with AMD and NVIDIA, carries no warranty, and depends on files supplied by the user.

Requirements that determine whether it can run
Before comparing GPU models, check the conditions that can prevent the mod from starting at all:
- Operating system: Windows 11 is required.
- Graphics API: The game must run through DirectX 12.
- Game technology: The title must already use FSR, DLSS or XeSS so the mod has a supported upscaling or reconstruction path to replace.
- Driver: Adrenalin 26.1.1 or later is required.
- Runtime files: You must provide your own DLL copies. The project does not grant ownership or redistribution rights for files from another vendor.
- Anti-cheat: Play must occur with anti-cheat enforcement disabled. That excludes protected multiplayer sessions unless the game offers an explicitly supported offline or unprotected mode.
These are hard prerequisites, not optimization suggestions. A faster GPU cannot compensate for a game using DirectX 11, an older driver, missing runtime files or an active anti-cheat service.
Why RX 9000 has the practical advantage
RDNA4 includes the relevant FP8 hardware
AMD says FSR 4 uses RDNA4 FP8 WMMA hardware. That hardware is the key architectural difference for this use case: neural rendering performs repeated matrix operations, and FP8-capable acceleration can process those operations more efficiently than relying on less specialized paths. The mod can execute on RDNA3, but the absence of equivalent FP8 support removes the headroom that the RX 9000 design provides.

AMD’s support matrix separates the generations. FSR 4.0.2 requires RX 9000 or newer, while FSR 3.1.5 supports RX 7000 and older GPUs. On hardware that does not meet FSR 4 requirements, the SDK selects FSR 3.1.5 instead. That official fallback does not prove that every modded DLSS feature will behave identically, but it is a useful indicator of how AMD itself segments neural and non-neural workloads.
RX 9070 XT specifications relevant to this decision
AMD’s launch announcement lists the RX 9070 XT with 64 compute units, 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, 304 W total board power and a US launch suggested etail price of $599. Those figures describe the reference launch positioning in 2025; they are not a guarantee of a particular board partner’s cooler, factory overclock or current retail price.

What the published performance reports actually show
No standardized, same-build RX 7000-versus-RX 9000 benchmark is available in the cited material. The numbers below come from different builds and observers, so they should be used to understand the range and direction of results rather than as a controlled ratio between generations.

The large spread is not surprising for an unofficial implementation. Kernel revisions, model selection, resolution, frame-generation settings, game patches, shader compilation and driver behavior can all move the result. Record the mod version, driver version, GPU, game build, resolution and enabled features whenever you test; otherwise a frame-rate claim cannot be reproduced meaningfully.
RX 9000: when the extra hardware is justified
You want neural rendering as the main feature
Choose this generation when the purpose of the purchase is to experiment with the full mod stack rather than simply obtain a cheaper card for ordinary upscaling. RDNA4’s FP8 WMMA capability aligns with the workload the project is trying to accelerate, and official FSR 4 support gives the card a supported path even when a particular game is not suitable for the mod.
You expect to use several DLSS-derived functions
The 0.8.0 project notes cover Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, Frame Generation and Neural Rendering on RDNA4. Running several of these functions together can increase memory traffic and compute demand. The RX 9070 XT’s 16 GB frame buffer gives a defined capacity for this model, although actual consumption still depends on texture quality, ray-tracing settings, resolution and the game.
You prefer a clearer software fallback
If a game update breaks the unofficial integration, an RX 9000 owner can revert to AMD’s supported FSR 4 path where the title implements it, or use FSR 3.1.5 when an older integration is required. That does not make every game compatible, but it reduces dependence on one experimental layer.

RX 7000: when the lower-cost route is sensible
Your target is conventional FSR 3.1.5
RX 7000 remains fully relevant for ordinary FSR 3.1.5 upscaling and frame generation. AMD’s SDK supports that version on RX 7000 and older hardware, so a card from this generation can be a rational value purchase when the games you play already implement FSR 3.1.5 and you are not buying primarily for neural rendering.

You already own an RX 7000 card
Ownership changes the calculation. If you have an RX 7000 system, the mod is worth testing under its stated Windows 11, DirectX 12, driver and anti-cheat conditions before spending money. A lower result may still be useful for learning the workflow or playing an offline title at reduced settings, provided expectations are set by a measured run rather than by the RX 9000 report.
You value purchase price over headroom
RX 7000 models can cost less because they are an earlier generation, but the available data does not establish a current street-price table for specific boards. Compare the actual price of the exact model, cooler, warranty and power supply requirements at the time of purchase. A discounted RX 7000 is not automatically better value if you would replace it soon after discovering that the neural workload is too slow.

Rasterization and ray-tracing performance should be judged from benchmarks for the exact games and models you are considering. The available evidence here does not provide a controlled head-to-head result, so it would be misleading to claim a universal winner for those conventional workloads.
How to evaluate a card before installing the mod
- Confirm the game path. Verify that the title has a DirectX 12 renderer and already exposes FSR, DLSS or XeSS. A game without one of those integration points is outside the project’s stated target.
- Check the operating system. Use Windows 11. If the machine is on another Windows release, satisfy that requirement before troubleshooting GPU performance.
- Update the graphics driver. Install Adrenalin 26.1.1 or later, then restart so the new driver is active.
- Obtain permitted runtime files. Use DLL copies you are entitled to use. Do not assume the project supplies them or that a download from an unknown source is legitimate.
- Read the release-specific instructions. The project is changing quickly; follow the README for the exact version you install rather than mixing files from different releases.
- Use an unprotected test environment. Disable anti-cheat only where the game publisher permits it, such as an offline mode or a separate test installation. Never inject the mod into a protected multiplayer session.
- Start with a baseline. Record native, FSR and modded frame rates at the same resolution and quality settings. Capture frame time as well as average FPS so stutter is visible.
- Change one variable at a time. Test Super Resolution first, then add frame generation or other features. This isolates a slow model, a game-specific issue or a driver problem.
Anti-cheat and multiplayer implications
The requirement for anti-cheat-disabled play is a practical boundary, not a minor inconvenience. Anti-cheat systems monitor executable modules, injected DLLs and rendering hooks; an unofficial replacement can be blocked even when the game itself is technically DirectX 12 compatible. A kick, account warning or ban is a service-policy issue, not evidence that a faster Radeon would solve the problem.

Use the mod only in environments where the publisher explicitly allows modified files. Offline campaigns, local test scenes and development builds are the safest examples. For a competitive or service-hosted game, keep a clean installation and use the supported renderer instead. Do not alternate modified and protected sessions in the same installation without understanding how that title validates files.
Driver, game and mod stability
Unofficial neural rendering adds another version dependency to the normal GPU stack. A game patch can change its upscaler interface; a driver can alter shader compilation or memory behavior; and a mod release can replace kernels or model-loading logic. Keep a record of the working combination instead of updating every component simultaneously.
When a new release is available, clone or back up the known-good game configuration, test the update in an offline environment and compare frame-time captures. If the new build is slower, revert one component at a time. This approach identifies whether the regression came from the game, driver or mod rather than turning the troubleshooting process into guesswork.

The mod does not load
Recheck the four gating conditions first: Windows 11, DirectX 12, Adrenalin 26.1.1 or later, and a game using FSR, DLSS or XeSS. Then verify that the DLLs are the copies you are authorized to use and that their versions match the release instructions. A title running in a legacy renderer will not become compatible through a GPU upgrade.

Frame rate is far below the README figure
The 90–100 FPS RX 9070 XT figure is a developer report tied to a particular 2026 build, 1080p resolution and full model. Compare your settings with that context before drawing conclusions. Resolution, model choice, ray tracing, frame-generation mode, shader compilation and a different game can each produce a lower result. On RX 7000, missing FP8 acceleration is an additional architectural constraint.

Image quality is unstable or shows artifacts
Return to the game’s normal FSR or native path, confirm that the problem disappears, then enable only Super Resolution in the mod. Add other features separately. If artifacts appear only after a game or driver update, test the previous known-good combination and consult the release-specific notes before changing unrelated settings.
The game disconnects or refuses to start
That behavior is consistent with anti-cheat or file-integrity enforcement. Stop using the modified installation for protected sessions, restore the original files and use an approved offline or unmodified configuration. Do not attempt to bypass the protection.
Memory usage or stutter is excessive
Reduce texture quality or ray-tracing features, allow shader compilation to finish, and monitor frame time rather than average FPS alone. Neural models and frame generation add work beyond ordinary upscaling; a card can show a high average while still delivering uneven pacing.

How to weigh total cost
Use the RX 9070 XT’s $599 US launch SEP as historical context, not as a current quote. Board prices change by country, retailer, cooler design and stock. Add the cost of a suitable power supply, case airflow and any required operating-system upgrade. The 304 W TBP is the GPU’s published board-power figure; a complete system needs additional headroom for the CPU, storage, fans and transient loads.
For RX 7000, calculate the same total rather than comparing only sticker prices. A cheaper card may be the better purchase for FSR 3.1.5 today, while a more expensive RX 9000 card can avoid an early replacement if neural rendering becomes your main workload. The right answer depends on which feature you will use every week, not on the generation number alone.
Decision checklist
- Choose RX 9000 when modded DLSS 5 neural rendering is the purchase objective, you can run Windows 11 and DirectX 12, and you accept experimental software and anti-cheat restrictions.
- Choose RX 7000 when your games primarily use FSR 3.1.5, the lower acquisition cost matters more than neural-rendering headroom, or you already own the card and want to experiment before upgrading.
- Do not choose either for this mod if your main games require active anti-cheat, use only non-DirectX-12 renderers, or cannot be played with user-supplied DLLs under the publisher’s rules.
- For a new purchase, verify the exact model rather than relying on the family label. Cooling, memory capacity, power connectors, warranty and local pricing vary between boards.
The evidence supports a clear technical distinction: both generations can load the unofficial project, but RDNA4’s FP8 hardware and official FSR 4 path give RX 9000 the stronger foundation for neural rendering. RX 7000 remains a sensible conventional-upscaling value option when that is the workload you actually intend to run.
