Available comparison figures point to a substantial performance advantage over the RX 580, while the RX 6600 also has a lower cited power figure. The RX 580 can still make sense for lighter games or a very tight budget, but only if it costs notably less and passes a careful condition check.
Which card is better for 1080p gaming?
The RX 6600 is the stronger general-purpose 1080p pick. Two third-party comparison pages report higher aggregate results for the RX 6600 than the RX 580, including one 8GB-versus-8GB comparison. The figures are indicative rather than promises: the pages’ testing methods were not sufficiently established to treat them as a reproducible head-to-head, and results vary by game, settings, system, and test method.
GPUsed reports a 1080p aggregate of 133 FPS for the RX 6600 8GB and 79 FPS for the RX 580 8GB. NanoReview reports an average of 116 FPS versus 52 FPS at 1080p High. These are published aggregate statistics from undated comparison pages, not expected frame rates for a particular game. Tom’s Hardware’s RX 6600 launch review describes it as primarily a 1080p card and notes that demanding games can struggle at maximum settings. Treat it as a capable 1080p option, not a guarantee of max settings or a fixed frame rate in every new title.
RX 580 and RX 6600 specifications compared
The table uses AMD’s RX 6600 product specifications and MSI’s specifications for one specific RX 580 model, the RX 580 GAMING 8G. Partner cards can differ, so check the exact model printed on a used listing.

| Specification | AMD Radeon RX 6600 | MSI RX 580 GAMING 8G |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 8GB GDDR6 | 8GB GDDR5 |
| Memory bus | Not stated in the cited AMD product specifications | 256-bit |
| Compute units | 28 | Not stated in the cited MSI specifications |
| Infinity Cache | 32MB | Not stated in the cited MSI specifications |
| Board power / consumption | 132W typical board power, per AMD | 185W consumption, per MSI for this board |
| Power connector | One 8-pin connector, per AMD | One 8-pin connector, per MSI for this board |
| PSU recommendation | 450W minimum, per AMD | 500W recommended, per MSI for this board |
Both cards are available in 8GB forms, but equal memory capacity does not mean equal performance. The RX 6600 uses GDDR6 in AMD’s specification; the cited MSI RX 580 uses GDDR5. The power figures also need to be read in context: 132W is AMD’s typical board-power figure for the RX 6600, while 185W is MSI’s consumption figure for one RX 580 board. They are not a guarantee of whole-system power use, nor do they describe every partner model.
Is the RX 6600 worth paying more for?
It is usually worth considering the extra cost if you play demanding games, want more headroom at 1080p, or are replacing a slower card and expect to keep the GPU for a while. Whether it is worth a specific premium depends on local listings and the exact cards on offer. No universal used-price cutoff is established here: asking prices vary by region, seller, condition, and time.

- Memory: 8GB GDDR6
- XFX SWFT Dual Fan Cooling Solution
- Boost Clock: Up to 2655 MHz
- Lean toward the RX 6600 if its premium fits your budget and both listings are similarly trustworthy. Its reported aggregate advantage and lower cited board-power figure make it the more appealing all-round option.
- Consider the RX 580 if it is much cheaper, your games are relatively light, and you are comfortable with an older card that may need lower settings in demanding titles.
- Do not choose on the model name alone. A tested card with a return option can be a safer purchase than a cheaper card with unclear condition or no recourse.
Check PSU, connectors, and case fit before buying
AMD specifies a 450W minimum PSU for its RX 6600, and MSI recommends a 500W PSU for the RX 580 GAMING 8G. Those recommendations apply to the cited specifications, not every partner card or every system. Before purchasing, check the card maker’s requirement for the exact model, the power connector available from your PSU, the PSU’s quality and condition, and clearance inside your case. A wattage label alone does not establish that an older or low-quality PSU is suitable for your complete system.
How to inspect a used RX 580 or RX 6600
- Confirm the exact variant. Ask for the manufacturer’s model name and verify memory capacity, card dimensions, power connector, and PSU guidance against that model’s specification. RX 580 partner-board details can differ.
- Inspect the card and fans. Look for physical damage, corrosion, loose parts, or fans that do not turn freely. Ask whether the seller can demonstrate that the card runs.
- Request a practical test. Where possible, see the card running a game or a stress test. Watch for visual artifacts, crashes, unusual noises, and temperatures that rise abnormally. A monitoring utility can help observe a test, but it cannot reveal the card’s full history or guarantee future reliability.
- Confirm the return terms before paying. Understand whether you can return the card if it fails under normal use and keep the listing and seller communications.
These checks reduce uncertainty; they do not prove a used GPU will remain reliable. Give condition and seller protections real weight when comparing two cards, rather than treating a lower asking price as the whole value calculation.

How to read RX 580 versus RX 6600 benchmark claims
Published comparison pages can help establish the broad performance direction, but their aggregate numbers are not interchangeable with results from a controlled, current test of your games. Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 GPU hierarchy combines multiple test generations and warns that the older tables are not actively updated and use different test suites and platforms. Subtracting an RX 580 result from an older table from an RX 6600 result in a newer suite would therefore not produce a fair direct comparison.
For a decision, prioritize credible results for the specific games and settings you play, then treat broad averages as context. Neither aggregate figure above establishes the frame rate you will see on your CPU, at your resolution and settings, or in a particular title.

Verdict
Buy the used RX 6600 if the premium is acceptable and the card checks out; it is the better-supported choice for stronger 1080p performance and has the lower cited power figure. Choose the RX 580 only when the savings are meaningful for your budget and its performance is sufficient for your game list. In either case, verify the exact board, system fit, condition, and return terms before buying.
