AMD’s specifications list the RX 570 (OEM) at 150 W typical desktop board power and a 450 W minimum PSU recommendation. For the RX 580, AMD lists 185 W typical board power and a 500 W minimum PSU recommendation. These are not the same kind of figure: board power describes the graphics card, while PSU wattage is guidance for the whole system. Check the exact card model’s specifications and power connector before choosing or reusing a supply.
RX 570 vs. RX 580 power and PSU requirements
The figures below come from AMD’s current product support specifications and two specific MSI partner-card pages. They are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent measurements or a guarantee that every PC with a PSU of the listed capacity will be suitable.
| Card reference | Listed card power | PSU guidance | Connector and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| AMD Radeon RX 570 (OEM) | 150 W typical desktop board power | 450 W minimum PSU | Connector not stated on the cited AMD page; reference is labeled OEM. |
| AMD Radeon RX 580 | 185 W typical desktop board power | 500 W minimum PSU | Connector not stated on the cited AMD page. |
| MSI RX 570 Gaming 4G | 120 W power consumption | 450 W recommended PSU | One 8-pin power connector; this is a specific MSI model. |
| MSI RX 580 8G | 185 W power consumption | 500 W recommended PSU | One 8-pin power connector; this is a specific MSI model. |
Subtracting AMD’s listed typical figures gives a 35 W difference (185 W minus 150 W). That is a comparison of AMD’s specifications, not a measured difference in every game or between every RX 570 and RX 580 design. The MSI RX 570 Gaming 4G, for example, lists 120 W, whereas AMD’s RX 570 (OEM) page lists 150 W. MSI cautions that specifications can vary by model and market.
What the wattage numbers mean
Card power is not PSU capacity
A typical board-power or card-power figure describes the graphics card’s listed power use. A 450 W or 500 W recommendation is guidance for the power supply serving the entire computer; it does not mean the GPU alone consumes that much. The two types of numbers should not be treated as interchangeable.

A recommendation is not a universal system guarantee
The cited manufacturer pages state PSU recommendations, but they do not provide a component-by-component sizing formula or guarantee for every system. The processor, other components, PSU condition and available power connections are part of the whole-system decision. Use the recommendation for the exact graphics-card model as a starting point, then check that the PSU and the rest of the PC are suitable.
What PSU wattage should you get for an RX 570?
AMD lists a 450 W minimum PSU recommendation for its RX 570 (OEM), and MSI recommends 450 W for its RX 570 Gaming 4G. Those figures support using 450 W as the cited guidance for those references—not as a rule for every RX 570. Confirm the label and documentation for the card you own or plan to buy, especially if it is a factory-overclocked or otherwise different partner model.

Check the power connector before installing
- Identify the exact card. Read the full manufacturer and model name from the card label, product listing or documentation; “RX 570” or “RX 580” alone may not identify its specific power requirements.
- Open that model’s specification page. Find its recommended PSU capacity and PCIe power connector requirements. Do not assume the connector listed for a different model applies to yours.
- Inspect the PSU’s available PCIe cable. Make sure it has the connector the card requires. The two MSI examples in the table each specify one 8-pin connector; that does not establish the connector for all cards in either family.
- Check the complete PC configuration. A PSU recommendation is system-level guidance. Verify the supply is appropriate for the other components as well as the graphics card before installing.
