Russell Road in Northland reopened in early October 2026 after about eight months closed by a January landslide, according to RNZ reporting. The closure cut off coastal communities including Ōakura, where Ōakura Bay Store owner Nena Rogers said the disruption was “hell on wheels.”
Why was Russell Road closed?
After a week of heavy rain in January 2026, a major landslide buried Russell Road under nearly 100,000 cubic metres of soil, boulders and trees, according to the RNZ report as summarized in the available account. What does the reopening mean for travellers?
The reported reopening restored the road connection after months of disruption, but the available account does not establish the precise reopening time, any restrictions that may remain, or current road and safety conditions.
