Choose RuneScape: Dragonwilds for RuneScape lore, quests, named skills, and magic that helps with combat and survival. Choose Valheim for Norse-inspired exploration, sailing, regional boss fights, and ambitious building. Both can be played solo or with friends, but Dragonwilds supports up to four players while Valheim’s Steam listing describes groups of up to ten. This recommendation is based on the games’ published features, not comparative playtesting.
How Dragonwilds and Valheim differ
| What to compare | RuneScape: Dragonwilds | Valheim |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | RuneScape fantasy lore, set on Ashenfall. | A procedurally generated world inspired by Norse mythology and Viking culture. |
| Progression | Quests, skill leveling, regional exploration, spells, crafting, and survival. | Explore biomes, gather resources, craft gear and food, sail, and defeat regional Forsaken bosses. |
| Building | Craft gear and shelters. | Build from basic shelters to villages or mountain fortresses. |
| Group size | Solo or up to three other players, according to Jagex. | One to ten players, according to Steam; it also lists single-player and online co-op. |
These descriptions point to different survival-game rhythms. Dragonwilds ties familiar franchise elements—skills, quests, creatures, and magic—to gathering and crafting. Valheim puts biome exploration, preparation, sailing, and boss-led advancement at the center.

Choose Dragonwilds if RuneScape-style fantasy is the draw
Jagex describes Dragonwilds as a separate experience from the RuneScape MMORPG, rather than a mode within that game. It uses RuneScape lore and skills in a survival setting on Ashenfall. Its official launch description names threats including Zogres, Black Knights, and Garou, and says anima-rich magic can help in combat and with gathering resources.
Quests and skill leveling give its survival loop a more explicitly RuneScape-shaped framework: explore, gather, craft gear or shelter, use spells, and advance skills while pursuing quests. If you want survival systems wrapped around recognizable RuneScape ideas, Dragonwilds is the closer fit.

Examples of its regional content
In a June 23, 2026 update announcement, Jagex described Umbral Sands as a new region with dynamic environmental systems, a Fuzan boss and Fight Cave encounter, and magic carpets for travel. The announcement also listed Adamant, Red Dragonhide, and Yew materials and gear. Those are examples from that pre-launch update, not a complete inventory of the version available after launch.
Choose Valheim if exploration and building matter most
Valheim’s Steam description emphasizes distinct biomes with their own resources and enemies, sailing, crafting, and defeating regional Forsaken bosses to advance. That makes its progression closely connected to exploring the world and preparing for what comes next. Food is part of that preparation: Steam describes health and stamina benefits that matter in combat.
Its building range is another reason to choose it. Steam describes construction ranging from simple shelters to villages and mountain fortresses. If a large group, a long-running settlement project, or a Norse-inspired world sounds more appealing than RuneScape lore and skills, Valheim is the stronger match on paper.
Playing with friends: group size and cross-play
Jagex says Dragonwilds supports solo play or groups of up to four total players, with cross-play across all supported platforms. That answers whether friends on different supported platforms can play together, but it does not establish cross-progression, save migration, or every account-linking detail. Cross-play should not be taken to mean that saves automatically carry between devices.

Steam’s same-day snapshot showed 94% positive English reviews overall and 81% positive recent English reviews from 12,700 reviews in the preceding 30 days. Which game should you pick?
- Pick Dragonwilds if RuneScape lore, quests, skill progression, fantasy creatures, and practical uses for magic are your priorities.
- Pick Valheim if you want Norse-inspired biome exploration, sailing, boss-led advancement, and extensive settlement building.
- For a larger group, Valheim has the higher stated player limit on Steam: up to ten, compared with Dragonwilds’ four total. Check cross-platform compatibility if the group uses different devices.
- For cross-platform play, Jagex explicitly says Dragonwilds supports cross-play across its supported platforms. The Valheim Steam listing does not establish every platform pairing.
