Yes. On a Steam Deck running SteamOS, install Blizzard’s Windows Battle.net app as a non-Steam game and run it through Proton; then install World of Warcraft from Battle.net. You do not need to install Windows on the Deck for this route. A Windows handheld follows the regular Windows installation path instead. SteamOS is Linux-based, so this is a compatibility workaround—not official Blizzard Linux support—and controller mapping does not change Blizzard’s published keyboard-and-mouse input requirement.

Which installation route should you use?

Use the Steam shortcut and Proton method for a Steam Deck on SteamOS. Lutris is another SteamOS option, while a Windows handheld uses Blizzard’s Windows app directly. These are alternatives, not steps to combine.

Route Setup approach Launcher maintenance Support boundary
SteamOS with a Steam shortcut Add the Battle.net installer as a non-Steam game, force a Proton compatibility tool, then edit the same shortcut to point to the installed launcher. Keep the shortcut tied to its existing Proton prefix when changing its target. Proton compatibility route; not official Blizzard Linux support.
SteamOS with Lutris Install Lutris from Flathub, use its Battle.net installer, and launch Battle.net through Lutris. Manage the launcher through Lutris rather than layering it onto the Steam shortcut procedure. Wine-based alternative; not official Blizzard Linux support.
Windows handheld Download and run Blizzard’s Windows Battle.net app, sign in, and install WoW. Use the Windows installation rather than SteamOS prefix or Proton instructions. Uses Windows, which Blizzard lists among supported operating systems.

Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ says, “Yes, you can run non-Steam games through Proton.” That establishes the general Steam Deck capability, not a guarantee that every Battle.net or WoW update will work identically. Current launcher behavior and Proton compatibility can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical distinction is the operating system, not the handheld shape. On SteamOS, Battle.net is a Windows application running through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer. On Windows, install the Windows app normally; there is no Proton prefix to find or preserve. Blizzard’s US system requirements list Windows and macOS, not Linux, so SteamOS owners should regard the Proton and Lutris methods as community compatibility routes.

What should you check before installing?

Check storage and internet access before starting. Blizzard’s US WoW requirements page, as observed October 30, 2026, lists 128GB of available SSD space and a broadband connection. The 128GB figure is a published requirement, not a claim that every installation occupies exactly that much space. WoW is an online game, so plan on connectivity rather than an offline workaround.

  • Make room on the device’s SSD and leave additional headroom for updates where possible.
  • Confirm you have a reliable internet connection for downloading, updating, and playing.
  • If considering a microSD card, remember that the Steam Deck has a UHS-I card slot, but a card is not necessarily equivalent to SSD storage or SSD performance.

Valve lists Steam Deck OLED configurations with 512GB or 1TB built-in SSD storage, as well as an older 64GB LCD configuration; both have a UHS-I microSD slot. Check the capacity of your own device and its available space rather than assuming every Deck has the same storage. A 64GB model deserves particular scrutiny against Blizzard’s listed SSD requirement; a microSD card can add space, but it does not turn card storage into built-in SSD capacity.

If you have enough free internal storage, there is no reason to buy an accessory just to follow the installation steps. If the available capacity is tight, a 256GB UHS-I microSD card is one option to consider for general storage, while keeping the SSD caveat in mind. Valve specifies UHS-I support, not a promise that a particular card will perform like the internal drive. No device or accessory price is established here, so compare current prices and capacity rather than assuming one upgrade is always the best value.

How do you install WoW on a Steam Deck?

Install the Battle.net Windows desktop app through Steam in Desktop Mode, then change the existing Steam shortcut so it launches the installed Battle.net launcher. The precise screens and folder names can change; the important detail is to keep the installer and installed launcher associated with the same Proton prefix.

  1. Switch to Desktop Mode. Open the Steam menu and choose Power > Switch to Desktop. Check available SSD space and connect to the internet before downloading the installer.
  2. Download Battle.net. Get the Windows desktop-app installer from Blizzard’s official Battle.net download page. Save the installer somewhere you can locate from Steam’s file browser. The SteamOS procedure uses the Windows installer even though the Deck itself is not running Windows.
  3. Add the installer to Steam. Open the desktop Steam client and choose Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library. Browse to the downloaded Battle.net installer, select it, and add it to the library. This creates a Steam shortcut; it does not add WoW to the Steam storefront or install the game by itself.
  4. Force a Proton compatibility tool. In Steam, open the new shortcut’s Properties, select Compatibility, and enable the option to force the use of a specific compatibility tool. Choose an available Proton option, then launch the shortcut to run the installer. A May 2026 walkthrough names Proton 9 as an example, not as a universally required or verified best choice for October 2026.
  5. Finish installing, then quit Battle.net. Once the Windows app has installed, close it before changing the shortcut. The next step is to point Steam to the installed launcher rather than the downloaded setup program. Make sure Battle.net is fully closed rather than merely left running in the background.
  6. Find the installed launcher inside the same prefix. In the Steam shortcut’s Properties, locate the Proton prefix and find Battle.net Launcher.exe under a path similar to ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/<prefix-number>/pfx/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Battle.net/. Prefix numbers vary by installation. If Steam hides dot-folders, enable viewing hidden files in the file manager. The example path is a guide, not a fixed folder name for every Deck.
  7. Edit, do not replace, the shortcut. In Properties, change the shortcut’s target to the installed Battle.net Launcher.exe and set its “Start In” or working-directory field to the Battle.net folder. Quote paths containing spaces. Keep the existing shortcut and its compatibility setting; deleting it and adding a fresh one can create a different prefix. A newly created shortcut may then look in a different virtual Windows environment where the launcher is not installed.
  8. Launch Battle.net and install WoW. Start the edited shortcut, sign in, and choose the WoW edition you want in Battle.net. Let the launcher download and install the game, then use the same shortcut for later launches. After installation, you can return to Gaming Mode and launch Battle.net from the non-Steam library entry.

Once the game is installed, Battle.net remains the route for launching and managing it; the Steam library entry is a shortcut to that launcher. Installing through Battle.net also means you choose the WoW edition from within Blizzard’s app rather than from a Steam game page. If you play a particular Classic edition, select that edition in Battle.net before downloading.

Can you use Lutris instead of a Steam shortcut?

Yes. Lutris offers a separate Wine-based route for installing and launching Battle.net on SteamOS. A May 2026 walkthrough describes installing Lutris as a Flatpak from Flathub, selecting its Battle.net installer, completing setup, and launching Battle.net from Lutris.

Choose one route and manage Battle.net through that route. Lutris is not an extra layer that needs to be added after completing the Steam shortcut procedure. In broad terms, the Steam shortcut route gives you a Steam library entry and requires care when editing that shortcut and preserving the prefix. Lutris centralizes the Battle.net setup and launch in Lutris instead. Neither option changes Blizzard’s Linux support status, and neither route is guaranteed to behave identically after every launcher or game update.

SteamOS support can also vary across handheld hardware: Valve lists the Steam Deck and Legion Go S among its Powered by SteamOS devices, but that does not mean every other AMD handheld has identical vendor support. Check the maker’s support guidance for the exact model rather than assuming another device will use the Deck’s menus, storage path, or support arrangements unchanged.

How does installation differ on a Windows handheld?

On a handheld already running Windows, download Blizzard’s Windows Battle.net app, run its installer, sign in, install WoW, and configure controls. Do not use the SteamOS steps for Proton, Linux file paths, or compatibility prefixes. ASUS identifies the ROG Ally X as Windows 11 hardware; that describes its operating system, not measured WoW performance.

This is the simpler route if your device already runs Windows: Battle.net’s installer and WoW use the Windows environment for which Blizzard publishes requirements. You do not need to install Windows on a Steam Deck just to use WoW, however. Installing a separate operating system on a Deck is not part of the SteamOS instructions here, and the SteamOS Proton route avoids that change.

The choice between a Steam Deck and a Windows handheld is therefore partly about how much setup you want to do. SteamOS requires a compatibility layer and some shortcut maintenance, while Windows uses the standard app installation. The available manufacturer information identifies the operating systems and hardware configurations, but does not establish comparative WoW frame rates, battery runtime, or a performance winner. Choose by the device you own, its storage, operating system, and preferred interface—not an unmeasured game benchmark.

How can you control WoW on a handheld?

On a Steam Deck, Steam Input can map controls, while the optional ConsolePort addon provides gamepad-oriented action bars, bindings, keyboard, and menu features. Both can make play more practical, but neither changes Blizzard’s published requirement: “Keyboard and mouse required. Other input devices are not supported.” This is Blizzard’s stated input support boundary, not proof that a community controller setup cannot function.

That distinction helps answer whether WoW has controller support “these days.” Community tools and Steam Input can provide ways to play with handheld controls, but Blizzard’s published requirement still calls for keyboard and mouse. Treat mapped controls and addons as a practical workaround, not an official change in supported input devices. If you rely on a specific layout or addon, expect to check its configuration and edition compatibility rather than assuming it is built into the game.

Use Steam Input for custom mappings

Steam Input lets you assign controller actions and can use the Deck’s thumbsticks, trackpads, touchscreen, and rear grip buttons. A mouse-like trackpad or touchscreen can help with interface navigation, while custom bindings can put frequently used actions on physical controls. The best layout depends on your interface preferences and how much mouse precision you want.

This route is useful if you want to build around the Deck’s built-in controls or keep the game interface close to its standard form. It can also take more configuration: you choose a layout and bindings, then adjust them if they do not suit how you navigate menus or use actions. On the OLED model, Valve lists four assignable rear grip buttons alongside the trackpads, touchscreen, and thumbsticks. These are hardware options, not preconfigured WoW controls.

Consider ConsolePort for a gamepad-oriented interface

ConsolePort, by MunkDev, adds gamepad-oriented interface features. When choosing it, check the addon file for your exact WoW edition—Retail and the different Classic editions do not necessarily use the same file. Its CurseForge listing showed files for several editions and an update dated October 21, 2026; that listing does not establish that every edition or later game patch works identically.

ConsolePort may suit someone who prefers an interface designed around a gamepad, whereas Steam Input alone is principally a way to map the controls. The addon is optional and adds its own edition and patch-maintenance consideration. A high download counter, if you encounter one on a live addon page, is not a guarantee of compatibility for your edition or the current WoW patch.

Use a keyboard and mouse when they make setup easier

An optional keyboard and mouse can simplify text entry, launcher setup, and mouse-driven interface tasks. The Deck OLED has trackpads, a touchscreen, thumbsticks, and four assignable rear grip buttons, so you can also combine built-in controls with an external keyboard or mouse when convenient. A USB-C dock is one possible way to arrange a desk-style setup, but Valve says docking does not increase the Steam Deck’s performance. A dock is for convenience and connectivity, not a graphics or frame-rate upgrade.

Steam Input and ConsolePort are not mutually described as official Blizzard support, and the supplied device and addon details do not establish one universally better layout. Consider how much configuration you are willing to do, whether you prefer a gamepad-oriented interface, how precise your pointer work needs to be, and whether you are willing to keep an addon matched to your WoW edition.

What should you do if Battle.net or controls misbehave?

Start by checking which program the shortcut targets and which controller configuration is active. SteamOS launch behavior can be sensitive to updates and prefix setup, so avoid rebuilding the installation until you have checked those basics.

The shortcut keeps opening the installer

Open the Steam shortcut’s Properties and check its target. If it still points to the downloaded setup file, change the target and working directory to the installed Battle.net launcher inside the existing prefix. Edit the shortcut rather than deleting and recreating it. Also verify that the installed launcher’s path is inside the same prefix created for the original installer; prefix numbers are installation-specific.

Battle.net appears installed, but the launcher cannot be found

Check that you are looking under the Steam shortcut’s own compatdata prefix and that hidden folders are visible in the file manager. The folder path varies because the prefix number is not universal. If you added a replacement shortcut after installation, it may be associated with a different prefix. Returning to and editing the original installer shortcut is the safer way to preserve the environment where Battle.net was installed.

Steam Input behaves like a desktop mouse

Confirm that you launched the intended Steam shortcut and that its active controller configuration is the one you expect. A September 2026 troubleshooting report described Steam losing track of the game process and reverting a controller layout when a Battle.net instance was already running. Treat this as one reported failure mode, not a universal cause or guaranteed fix. Closing an already-running launcher before testing the Steam entry can help determine whether that reported situation applies to your setup.

You are planning to play while traveling

WoW needs an internet connection for online play, so offline mode is not a dependable travel plan. Check that you will have a usable connection for login and play rather than relying on an offline workaround. Valve documents Remote Play from a home PC to the Deck, but a WoW-specific streaming setup is a separate option: it requires a configured host and should not be treated as a guaranteed substitute for installing the game on the handheld.

How should you choose between Steam Deck LCD and OLED?

Choose based on the device you already own, available storage, and the manufacturer specifications you value—not an assumed WoW frame-rate or battery-life difference. Valve lists the OLED Deck with 512GB or 1TB SSD configurations and an older 64GB LCD configuration; both include a UHS-I microSD slot. Blizzard’s listed 128GB available SSD requirement makes the available capacity on a low-storage model particularly important to check. No WoW-specific frame-rate or battery-life measurements are established.

The OLED’s listed SSD configurations provide more built-in capacity than the older 64GB LCD configuration, but storage capacity alone does not show how well WoW performs. Valve also publishes display and battery specifications for the devices; those general hardware details are not measurements of WoW runtime. If you already own a Deck, check free storage before considering an upgrade. If you are choosing a device, compare the exact model’s built-in capacity, screen and battery specification, and current price rather than treating “OLED” as a proven WoW performance advantage.

A Windows handheld such as the ROG Ally X is another operating-system choice, but the fact that it runs Windows 11 does not supply an apples-to-apples performance or battery test. There is no WoW-specific benchmark in the device information cited here. Do not buy a Deck OLED, Ally X, dock, or storage card based on a claimed WoW frame-rate advantage that has not been measured.

How to choose a control setup

Option Best suited to Trade-off
Steam Input mapping Players who want to customize physical controls or use trackpads for mouse-like navigation. Requires configuring and maintaining a suitable controller layout.
ConsolePort Players who prefer a gamepad-oriented interface with action bars, bindings, keyboard, and menu features. Requires selecting the correct edition-specific addon file and keeping patch compatibility in mind.
Keyboard and mouse Players who want familiar text entry and mouse-driven navigation. Requires access to external peripherals or a workable desk setup.

For minimum extra setup, begin with the built-in controls and a Steam Input layout, then decide whether you want the gamepad-focused features of ConsolePort. For precise mouse-driven tasks, use the trackpad or touchscreen, or connect a keyboard and mouse. Blizzard’s published requirement remains keyboard and mouse even if you find a controller setup that works for you.

How we picked the installation guidance

This guide distinguishes Blizzard’s published operating-system and input requirements from SteamOS compatibility methods and community control options. Blizzard’s US requirements page was available as an indexed extract on October 30, 2026, while its site did not allow a direct page fetch; confirm current requirements before installing because launcher behavior, game requirements, and addon versions can change. The dated May 2026 Battle.net walkthrough is procedural guidance, not an official Blizzard guarantee. No WoW-on-handheld benchmark, independently verified frame-rate statistic, or WoW battery-life measurement is used to make a performance claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to install Windows on the Steam Deck to run WoW?

No. On SteamOS, add Blizzard’s Windows Battle.net installer as a non-Steam game, run it through Proton, and install WoW from Battle.net. Installing Windows is not part of this route. It is still a compatibility workaround rather than official Blizzard Linux support.

How do I install World of Warcraft on a Steam Deck?

In Desktop Mode, download the Windows Battle.net installer from Blizzard, add it to Steam as a non-Steam game, force a Proton compatibility tool, and run it. After Battle.net installs, edit that same Steam shortcut to point to Battle.net Launcher.exe inside its existing prefix. Sign in and install your chosen WoW edition.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does WoW have controller support on handhelds?

Steam Input can map handheld controls, and ConsolePort offers gamepad-oriented interface features. Blizzard’s published WoW requirements still say keyboard and mouse are required and other input devices are not supported, so treat those control options as community workarounds rather than official controller support.

Can I install WoW on a microSD card instead of the Steam Deck’s SSD?

The Deck has a UHS-I microSD slot, but Blizzard’s listed requirement is 128GB of available SSD space. That requirement does not establish that card storage alone satisfies it, and a card is not necessarily equivalent to SSD performance. Check the current requirement and leave adequate internal SSD space.

Is WoW Steam Deck Verified?

No Steam Deck Verified status is established for this non-Steam Battle.net installation. Treat the Proton method as a compatibility route, not a Verified designation or a guarantee that every update will work.

Can I use Lutris instead of adding Battle.net to Steam?

Yes. Lutris is a separate Wine-based SteamOS option available as a Flatpak from Flathub. Use its Battle.net installer and launch Battle.net through Lutris; do not layer those steps on top of the Steam-shortcut installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the Steam Deck OLED run WoW faster than the LCD model?

No WoW-specific comparison establishes a frame-rate or battery-life advantage for either model. Compare the devices’ published specifications, built-in storage, and your own needs instead of assuming the OLED’s larger listed SSD configurations mean better game performance.

Can I play WoW offline or rely on Remote Play while traveling?

WoW requires internet access for online play, so offline mode is not a dependable plan. Remote Play from a home PC is a separate possibility that requires a configured host; a WoW-specific streaming setup is not guaranteed by the general feature.

The Bottom Line

For SteamOS, install Battle.net through Proton as a non-Steam shortcut and preserve that shortcut’s prefix when changing it from installer to launcher. Lutris is a separate alternative; a Windows handheld uses Blizzard’s regular Windows installer. Plan for the listed 128GB of available SSD space and an internet connection, and treat Steam Input or ConsolePort as workarounds rather than official controller support.
