You can run a continuous YouTube radio stream from a Google Cloud Compute Engine virtual machine (VM): run an encoder or playout application on the VM, then send its feed to YouTube Live using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. The VM keeps the encoder running without relying on your home computer, but a single VM is not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback. Plan for monitoring, recovery, reliable capacity, and music rights before treating the stream as 24/7.
How the setup works
The basic path is a source file or playlist, an encoder or playout application on a Compute Engine VM, and YouTube Live. For a simple radio stream with a static image, the application can play audio and encode a modest video feed; a more elaborate visual production needs a suitable source and more processing. The encoder connects to YouTube with a stream URL and stream key.
- Prepare the program. Organize the audio and any visual material your playout software will use. Confirm that you have the necessary rights to broadcast it.
- Create the VM. Choose a suitable operating system, machine type, region, and persistent storage for the media and software. The machine must have enough CPU for the selected encoder settings and enough network capacity for the outgoing stream.
- Install and configure playout software. Use an encoder or application that can play your intended source continuously and reconnect or restart after a failure. Set the output format and bitrate to settings YouTube supports.
- Create or select a YouTube Live stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, retrieve the stream URL and key, then enter them into the encoder.
- Test the feed, then start it. Check YouTube’s preview and stream health with representative audio and motion before relying on the setup. Start the broadcast when the feed is correct.
- Operate it. Monitor both the encoder process and the YouTube stream. Keep a recovery procedure ready for an encoder crash, VM problem, or dropped connection.

Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key
Find the stream URL and key
Create or select the live stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s matching fields. YouTube calls the stream key similar to the stream’s password and address: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, or source repositories. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement.

YouTube’s documented stream settings, including the stream key, DVR, and auto-start and auto-stop options, are described in YouTube’s stream settings guidance. Visibility and available options are controlled in your creator account, so confirm them in the current interface before going live. DVR can allow viewers to pause and resume a live stream; auto-start and auto-stop affect how the broadcast begins and ends, not whether your VM or encoder stays healthy.
Use a secure protocol and supported settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as a secure extension to RTMP that encrypts the connection to Google’s servers. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. The recommended video bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use YouTube’s current settings table rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream. - Choose sustainable quality. Use a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate the VM and network can sustain continuously. A static radio image may need less video encoding capacity than a changing visual, but the selected resolution and encoder still determine CPU and network requirements.
- Test the actual program. Check audio levels, continuity, image, and motion using representative content. YouTube recommends testing before launch, running an upload-speed test, and monitoring stream health.
- Prefer a stable output. CBR and a two-second keyframe interval are YouTube’s recommended baseline, not a promise that any particular VM configuration will deliver uninterrupted playback.
Plan for failures rather than assuming 24/7 means uninterrupted
A long-running encoder can fail, the VM can become unavailable, or the connection to YouTube can drop. A single VM therefore needs both automatic recovery and a way for a person to notice problems.
Recovery and monitoring checklist
- Configure the encoder or a process supervisor to restart the application after a crash, and verify the restart behavior instead of assuming it works.
- Monitor the VM and encoder process, as well as YouTube’s stream health. A running process does not by itself prove YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
- Document how to reconnect the encoder, restart the broadcast, and replace the stream key if it is compromised.
- Check available CPU, disk space, and network capacity over time. A configuration that works in a short test may still encounter resource or quota limits during continuous operation.
- For higher resilience, assess a multi-zone design against its cost and operational complexity. Google’s Compute Engine SLA distinguishes single-instance service from instances in multiple zones; the applicable commitments depend on the SLA terms and deployment. An SLA is not a guarantee that a particular YouTube broadcast will never be interrupted. See Google Cloud’s Compute Engine SLA.
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a different, managed media-processing architecture rather than a self-managed VM running your encoder. Google documents that a channel in a streaming state other than stopped or stopping may be restarted after 24 hours. It should not be treated as an eternal session workaround. Check the current Live Stream API quotas and limits if considering that service.

Estimate Compute Engine capacity and cost
There is no single reliable monthly total for this setup without choosing a region, machine type, disk, running hours, and network configuration. Compute Engine costs include VM usage, storage, and networking; use Google’s pricing calculator with those choices before committing, and recheck current rates rather than treating any estimate as a permanent price.
Google’s VPC pricing page lists transfer from Compute Engine to specific Google products, including YouTube, as no-charge in the stated pricing category. That narrow category does not establish that all stream-related transfers, destinations, IP configurations, or services are free. Review Google Cloud VPC pricing alongside the deployment details.

Outbound bandwidth limits depend on the Compute Engine machine family, traffic path, and instance configuration. Project quotas and a VM’s capacity can matter even when the encoder’s nominal bitrate appears modest. Check the current Compute Engine network bandwidth limits against your proposed stream settings. Google’s limited free tier should not be assumed to cover a production VM running around the clock; calculate the actual configuration and usage.

The ability to encode and transmit a track does not establish that you have permission to broadcast it. YouTube for Artists advises creators planning to use copyright-protected music during a live stream to coordinate with their label or distributor to avoid issues such as copyright strikes. That is general guidance, not a license or a ruling that a particular track is cleared. Establish that your permissions cover the works, territories, platform, and type of use in your broadcast. Also review the current YouTube rules that apply to your channel and programming. A technically continuous stream is not automatically eligible for every platform feature, and permission to use music is separate from platform policy compliance.
