Yes. A photo of purported GeForce RTX 5080 retail packaging reported on January 6, 2025, pointed to 16GB of GDDR7 memory. That was leak evidence, not an NVIDIA announcement: the original ChipHell post was later deleted, and HotHardware qualified the claim on the assumption that the photo was genuine. NVIDIA subsequently confirmed the 16GB specification officially.
What the packaging leak showed
HotHardware reported a photograph said to show RTX 5080 retail packaging on January 6, 2025. The packaging indicated 16GB of GDDR7. Because the image was attributed to a now-deleted ChipHell post, it is more accurate to describe the detail as a pre-launch leak than as an official specification. HotHardware also made its confirmation conditional on the photo being real. HotHardware’s report covered the claim in those terms.
What NVIDIA later confirmed
NVIDIA’s January 6, 2025 announcement established that the GeForce RTX 5080 has 16GB of GDDR7 memory and up to 960 GB/sec of memory bandwidth. In other words, the packaging image pointed to a specification that NVIDIA later confirmed; the announcement, not the leaked photo, is the authoritative confirmation. NVIDIA’s RTX 50 Series announcement provides the official figures.
NVIDIA’s Founders Edition product listing gives additional detail: 10,752 CUDA cores and a 2.62 GHz boost clock. These are listed specifications, not performance-test results. The Founders Edition listing documents those figures. MSI also lists a board-partner RTX 5080 model with 16GB GDDR7 on its product specification page.

Leak claim versus final launch details
| Detail | Pre-launch packaging report | Official or product-listing specification |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 16GB GDDR7 indicated by a purported packaging photo; leak provenance remains qualified. | 16GB GDDR7, confirmed by NVIDIA in its January 6, 2025 announcement. |
| Memory bandwidth | Not established by the packaging report. | Up to 960 GB/sec, per NVIDIA’s January 6, 2025 announcement. |
| CUDA cores | Not established by the packaging report. | 10,752 on NVIDIA’s Founders Edition product listing. |
| Boost clock | Not established by the packaging report. | 2.62 GHz on NVIDIA’s Founders Edition product listing. |
| Starting price and availability | Not established by the packaging report. | NVIDIA announced a $999 starting price and January 30, 2025 availability. |
The price and release date were NVIDIA’s announced launch terms; they do not establish every board-partner card’s price or its later retail availability. Nor does a packaging leak establish independent benchmark performance or how much stock retailers will have.

The practical takeaway is narrow: before launch, the packaging image was an early indication of the RTX 5080’s memory capacity, and NVIDIA later confirmed that capacity officially. It was not proof of gaming performance, actual retail supply, or pricing for every custom card. Buyers comparing specific models should rely on their own board-partner specifications and current retailer listings, rather than treating packaging evidence as a complete product review.
