The RTX 4090 Founders Edition is already a large card: 304 mm long and three slots thick. Partner cards can be longer, thicker, heavier, or built around different cooling and support features. There is no evidence here for a universal cooling or build-quality winner, so compare the exact model’s fit, power requirements, and review results rather than assuming every RTX 4090 is alike.
How large is the RTX 4090 Founders Edition?
NVIDIA lists the Founders Edition (FE) at 304 × 137 × 61 mm (length × width × thickness), occupying three slots. NVIDIA’s specification page clarifies that these figures describe the GPU as incorporated into its Founders Edition or reference design; partner-card dimensions are model-specific. See NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 specifications.

For case planning, NVIDIA asks builders to leave three expansion slots unused. Clearance equivalent to another unused slot typically improves airflow, and NVIDIA calls for an additional 36 mm of space for the power cables. Check the exact card’s dimensions and connector location against your case, including room to route the cable without pressing it against a panel. NVIDIA’s case-clearance guidance is for the reference design; it does not replace measuring a partner card.
How partner-card size and cooling designs differ
Partner manufacturers do not follow one common cooler design. NVIDIA’s partner roundup describes differences such as fan size and fan-stop behavior, flow-through vents, thicker heatsinks, vapor chambers, and support features. Those descriptions identify design choices, not controlled test results proving which card runs coolest or quietest. Compare the exact model you plan to buy, rather than applying a feature or measurement from one version to a whole brand.

The MSI and Gigabyte figures come from different sources, models, and dates; they are useful examples of variation, not a controlled head-to-head comparison. Check the current specification for the exact model and revision before planning a build.
What temperature and noise figures can—and cannot—tell you
In TechSpot’s one-hour Founders Edition test, conducted in a closed-door ATX case at a 21°C room temperature, the card averaged 72°C for GPU temperature and 84°C for memory temperature. TechSpot also reported 42 dBA and 415 W average GPU draw in that setup. These are results for that review’s conditions, not guaranteed readings in another case or a direct comparison with every partner card. Read the TechSpot RTX 4090 Founders Edition test with its methodology in mind.
A fair temperature or noise comparison needs sufficiently similar conditions: case and airflow, room temperature, workload and duration, fan settings, and noise measurement method. A larger heatsink or more fans may be relevant design information, but it cannot by itself establish a better measured result.
Power requirements depend on the card and the system
NVIDIA specifies 450 W total graphics power and 850 W required system power for the reference/Founders Edition design. NVIDIA lists two connection options: three PCIe 8-pin cables through the included adapter, or a 450 W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 cable. It cautions that system configuration affects power needs and that add-in-card specifications vary. Confirm the requirements and cable instructions for the exact partner model as well as the rest of your system; see NVIDIA’s power guidance.

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
Power modes can also differ within a partner model. MSI’s 2024 SUPRIM 24G datasheet lists 450 W in Silent mode and 480 W in Gaming mode. Those are specifications for that card and its named modes, not power figures for every RTX 4090.

Construction details are model-specific and should not be mistaken for a standardized quality score. MSI documents a vapor chamber, heat pipes, and a metal backplate with thermal pads for the SUPRIM 24G. Tom’s Hardware reported that its Gigabyte Gaming OC review sample included a support bracket. Such features help describe how a particular card is built or supported; the cited sources do not provide standardized durability testing that ranks FE and partner designs.
For a practical assessment, look at the exact card’s dimensions, weight, cooler construction, backplate and included support hardware, then check what the manufacturer specifies for that model. Do not infer long-term durability or overall superiority from the presence of any single feature.
Quick Recap
Checklist before choosing or installing an RTX 4090
- Check physical fit: confirm the exact card’s length, width, thickness or slot count, and leave the case clearance needed for its power plug and cable route.
- Check airflow and support: account for adjacent-slot obstruction and the card’s weight; verify whether a support bracket is included or whether your build needs compatible support.
- Confirm power: follow the exact card’s power-mode and PSU guidance, and use the specified cable or adapter arrangement for your system.
- Compare review results carefully: note each test’s case, ambient temperature, workload, fan behavior, and noise method before comparing temperatures or dBA.
- Separate features from outcomes: treat fan layouts, vapor chambers, heatsinks, and backplates as design details unless comparable measurements or durability testing substantiate a broader claim.
