Undervolting an RTX 2080 Ti can reduce power use, heat, and fan noise while retaining performance close to stock—but the stable voltage and clock depend on the individual card. A practical approach is to try a modest power-limit reduction first, then tune the voltage-frequency curve in MSI Afterburner if you want more control. Treat example settings as starting points, and validate them in the games you actually play.

What undervolting changes on an RTX 2080 Ti

A GPU voltage-frequency curve associates operating voltages with clock speeds. Undervolting changes that relationship so the card can target a given clock at a lower voltage, or operate at a lower clock and voltage to reduce consumption. Less power generally means less heat for the cooler to dissipate; fans may run more slowly as a result.

The card uses NVIDIA GPU Boost, which adjusts its operating point according to conditions such as temperature and power. A curve target is therefore not a promise of one fixed clock in every game. A well-tuned curve may preserve similar gaming performance while reducing power or limiting throttling, but an aggressive target can lower performance or cause instability. Coil whine may change, but an undervolt is not a reliable fix for it, and lower heat does not guarantee a longer card lifespan.

NVIDIA lists 89°C as the RTX 2080 Ti GPU maximum temperature. That is a documented maximum, not a recommended everyday target; judge your setup by sustained temperatures, fan noise, performance, and stability. Founders Edition and partner-card specifications differ, as illustrated by NVIDIA’s RTX 2080 Ti specifications and MSI’s separate Lightning Z, Ventus, and Duke specifications. Cooler design, factory overclock, BIOS power limits, silicon, ambient temperature, and card condition all affect results.

Before you tune: software, safety, and baseline

Use one tuning utility

MSI Afterburner provides the curve editor, power-limit control, monitoring, and profiles used in this guide. MSI says it supports graphics cards from other manufacturers as well. Download it through MSI’s official Afterburner support page; unofficial downloads branded as Afterburner can be unsafe. RivaTuner Statistics Server is an optional on-screen display component commonly bundled with Afterburner. HWiNFO can add sensor logging if you need it, but neither is required for basic tuning.

Use only one primary GPU tuning utility at a time. Afterburner settings can conflict with tuning features in NVIDIA App or another manufacturer’s utility. Software undervolting is reversible, but it is not risk-free: instability can crash games or Windows and disrupt unsaved work. Save a stock profile, leave automatic startup disabled until the profile is proven stable, and do not tune a PC that is already unstable for unexplained reasons.

Record a stock baseline

Reset existing GPU offsets and run a repeatable workload long enough for temperatures and clocks to settle. Record the conditions as well as the readings so your comparison is meaningful.

  • GPU temperature, core clock, voltage, and power draw or power percentage.
  • Memory clock, average FPS, and 1% lows if the game or benchmark reports them.
  • Fan speed and your noise impression.
  • Room temperature, resolution, graphics settings, ray tracing and DLSS settings, and any frame-rate cap.

MSI recommends comparing FPS, clock, memory clock, voltage, and temperature before and after tuning in its Afterburner overclocking and undervolting guide. Keep memory at stock while testing the core curve so a memory error does not muddy the diagnosis.

Option 1: reduce the power limit

A lower power limit is the simpler, reversible first experiment. It restricts the card’s power allowance but does not give you the same direct control over voltage and frequency as curve editing. Depending on the workload and card, it can cost more performance than a carefully tuned curve.

  1. Reset the core curve and core offset to stock in Afterburner.
  2. Set Power Limit to 90%, click Apply, and run the same benchmark or game used for your baseline.
  3. If the performance loss is acceptable, test 80%, then 70%, applying and checking each setting separately. Stop at the best balance of power, frame-time consistency, temperature, and FPS for your use.
  4. Save the preferred result to a profile once you have tested it.

These percentages are experiment steps, not recommended settings for every card. MSI describes the power-limit slider as an easier alternative to curve tuning in its guide.

Option 2: tune the voltage-frequency curve

Curve editing offers more direct control when you want to retain a chosen gaming clock at a lower voltage. Start conservatively: roughly 850–950 mV around the card’s normal sustained gaming clock is a broad exploration range, not an official specification or guarantee. One example to test is about 1,800 MHz at 900 mV. A particular RTX 2080 Ti may need a lower clock at that voltage; another sample may manage more.

Enable monitoring and open the editor

  1. Install a suitable graphics driver and MSI Afterburner. Reset existing overclock settings before starting.
  2. Open Settings → General and enable Unlock voltage control and Unlock voltage monitoring, if those options are available.
  3. In the Monitoring tab, enable GPU temperature, core clock, memory clock, voltage, power, GPU usage, and available limit indicators.
  4. Return to the main window and press Ctrl+F, or click the Curve Editor button. Keep memory tuning at stock.

Labels and options can vary somewhat across Afterburner versions, skins, and GPU support. Use the current interface rather than assuming an older screenshot matches exactly. MSI documents Afterburner’s monitoring and voltage controls on its support page.

Set and apply a conservative curve

  1. In the curve editor, find a voltage point in the approximate 850–950 mV range. Choose a clock near the card’s normal sustained gaming clock rather than assuming its advertised boost clock will be sustained.
  2. Select that point and adjust it to the target clock. If testing the example, begin around 900 mV and 1,800 MHz.
  3. Flatten or lower the curve points to the right of the selected point so the card does not simply move to a higher voltage and clock under load. Check the curve shape before applying.
  4. Close the editor, click Apply, and test the result. Save it to a profile for testing, but do not yet enable automatic Windows startup.

The GPU may move to other operating points as temperature, power, and workload change. Assess the sustained clock and behavior under load, not just the selected point shown in the editor.

Test stability in benchmarks and real games

Screen for immediate problems

Run a repeatable benchmark for about 10 minutes and watch clock, voltage, power, temperature, and fan speed. A short FurMark run of roughly 5–10 minutes can help reveal immediate instability or abnormal thermal behavior; MSI uses FurMark as an initial comparison step. It does not establish that the card is stable in every game.

Validate the workloads you care about

Test several demanding games, including your most-played title and, where possible, a built-in benchmark, a ray-traced game, and a rasterized game. Try different workloads and settings that reflect your use, including your usual resolution, frame-rate cap, and DLSS configuration. Aim for 30–60 minutes per demanding workload, then keep using the PC normally and watch for failures that show up only in longer sessions.

Instability can appear as driver resets, game crashes, black screens, freezes or reboots, flickering or corrupted geometry, sudden application closure, stuttering, unusually poor 1% lows, a falling benchmark score, or a clock that repeatedly collapses under load. MSI also identifies stutters, lower 1% lows, and application or system crashes as possible signs of an unstable setting in its tuning guide.

Troubleshoot crashes, low performance, and heat

If a game crashes or the display glitches

Change one variable at a time. Raise the selected voltage slightly or reduce the target clock by about 15–30 MHz, then repeat the workload that failed. If the problem remains, make another small change and retest. MSI’s guide discusses voltage changes of roughly 30–50 mV when troubleshooting; near a stable result, smaller steps can make it easier to isolate the boundary. Return to stock if instability persists or you cannot diagnose it.

If temperatures remain high

  • Reduce the target clock slightly or try a lower power limit.
  • Check case airflow, dust buildup, fan operation, and whether the heatsink is obstructed.
  • Consider card age and condition: dried thermal paste, worn fans, or memory and VRM cooling problems will not be repaired by an undervolt.
  • Repasting requires disassembling the card; do it only if you are comfortable with the process and its risks.

If FPS or frame times get worse

Compare sustained clock and frame times with the stock baseline. Check whether the card is power- or temperature-limited, whether the game is CPU-limited, and whether a frame-rate cap or memory change is affecting the comparison. Repeat the test with the same driver and graphics settings as the baseline. A lower-voltage target that is too low or too slow can reduce performance; an undervolt does not inherently increase FPS.

Save the stable profile and know how to revert

  1. After repeated testing, save the working settings to an Afterburner profile and keep a separate default profile.
  2. Continue to leave Start with Windows or automatic profile application disabled until you are confident in the setting during ordinary use.
  3. If you later enable automatic startup, make sure the stable profile is the one selected to apply.
  4. If an unstable profile loads and the desktop remains usable, open Afterburner, click Reset, disable startup application, and restart. Then load the default profile.
  5. If the desktop is not usable because Afterburner applies the profile at startup, boot Windows in Safe Mode and prevent Afterburner from launching. Avoid deleting configuration files unless necessary; their location varies by installation and version.

After a graphics-driver or Afterburner update, check that the profile still behaves as expected. Sensor reporting, interface labels, and startup behavior may vary by software version. MSI explains profile saving, loading, reset controls, and startup behavior on its Afterburner support page.

Common questions about RTX 2080 Ti undervolting

Is 900 mV a good setting?

It is a useful starting experiment, not a universal answer. Around 1,800 MHz at 900 mV is one example; test whether your card sustains it stably in your games. A cooler, factory-overclocked model and a blower card may behave differently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is a normal RTX 2080 Ti undervolt?

There is no single normal curve that applies to all RTX 2080 Ti cards. Silicon quality, cooler, factory settings, BIOS limits, temperature, and workload affect the stable result. Community examples such as RTX 2080 Ti undervolt reports and curve-editing discussion are anecdotal, not specifications or guarantees.

Should I change the memory clock too?

No—not while establishing core stability. Keep memory at stock first; tune it separately only after the core curve has passed your testing.

Can an undervolt fix coil whine or extend the card’s life?

It may change coil whine on some cards, but the outcome is inconsistent. Lower power and heat may reduce operating stress, but they do not establish a measurable lifespan increase.

Why can a card pass a stress test but crash in a game?

Different games and settings load the GPU differently. FurMark is an initial screen, not proof of stability across ray tracing, other game engines, frame-rate caps, and long sessions.

Should I undervolt a factory-overclocked or aging card?

Reset the card’s offsets before creating a curve, and compare against its own stock behavior. If an older card has clogged cooling, a failing fan, or another hardware fault, address that fault; an undervolt can reduce heat but cannot repair defective hardware.

Does undervolting damage the RTX 2080 Ti?

This method lowers the voltage target rather than raising it, but unstable settings can still cause crashes or lost unsaved work. Keep a stock profile, validate gradually, and revert if problems continue.

Can I use my saved curve after a software update?

Recheck it after driver or Afterburner updates because interface, sensor, and startup behavior can change. Confirm stability again in your usual workloads before relying on automatic startup.
