There is no universally best rotating proxy API. The right choice depends on the websites, countries, session behavior, throughput and compliance controls your scraper actually needs. Compare direct proxy networks with managed scraping APIs, run the same workload through two or three candidates, and choose by successful pages and effective cost—not by a vendor’s largest pool-size claim or lowest headline per-gigabyte price.
What counts as a rotating proxy API alternative?
A rotating proxy API gives your scraper an endpoint that forwards requests through different IP addresses. Rotation may occur on every request, after a time interval, or when you ask for a new session. You usually remain responsible for HTTP requests, cookies, JavaScript rendering, retries, parsing and anti-bot behavior.
A managed scraping API is a different alternative. You submit a URL and the provider operates more of the retrieval pipeline, which can include proxy selection, retries, browser rendering or CAPTCHA handling depending on the product. Scraping Central lists Zyte, ScraperAPI and ScrapingBee as examples of this category. Managed services can reduce setup and maintenance, while raw proxies provide more control and may cost less when your team can operate them efficiently.
Direct proxy networks versus managed scraping APIs
| Question | Direct rotating proxies | Managed scraping API |
|---|---|---|
| What you send | HTTP requests through a proxy host, port and credentials | A URL and product-specific extraction or rendering options |
| Who owns retries and rotation | Mostly your application | More of the provider’s pipeline, depending on the service |
| Control | High: headers, cookies, sessions, request timing and parsing are yours | Lower at the network layer, but often simpler operationally |
| Best fit | Teams needing custom workflows, long-lived sessions or precise request control | Teams that prefer a URL-in, data-out workflow and less proxy maintenance |
| Main trade-off | More engineering, monitoring and anti-bot work | Potentially higher cost per successful page and less low-level control |
Neither category guarantees access to a protected site. A residential label does not guarantee that a target will accept the request, and rotating an address cannot repair a broken session, an invalid login or a fingerprint that the site rejects.

Proxy types and when to test each one
Datacenter proxies
Datacenter addresses are generally fast and relatively inexpensive. They can work well for high-volume requests to lenient sites, but protected targets may identify and block them more readily. Start here when speed and cost matter more than residential-looking address space, then measure actual success.
Residential proxies
Residential pools use addresses associated with home devices. They are generally slower and more expensive than datacenter proxies and are often selected for protected targets. Statements such as “rarely blocked” are vendor claims, not a guarantee for your target. Verify that the provider’s sourcing, consent and acceptable-use terms fit your project.
ISP proxies
ISP proxies are static addresses registered to internet providers but hosted in data centers. Their stable sessions can suit logged-in or long-running tasks. The trade-off is usually a smaller address and location selection than a broad rotating residential pool, so confirm that the countries or cities you need are available.
Rotation and sticky sessions
A catalog or price page may emphasize rotation, but your workflow may require the opposite. Shopping carts, authenticated dashboards and multi-step forms often need one consistent IP and cookie jar for a period of time. Listing pages or independent product records may benefit from a fresh address per request. Test both a rotating mode and a sticky-session mode against the same sequence; do not assume that changing IPs alone solves blocks.
Alternatives to evaluate
Bright Data’s vendor-authored 2026 comparison lists Bright Data, Decodo (formerly Smartproxy), Oxylabs, SOAX, IPRoyal, Webshare and Rayobyte across residential, datacenter and ISP offerings. The positioning in that guide is editorial rather than an independent ranking: it presents Decodo as value-oriented, Oxylabs for enterprise workloads, SOAX for granular geo-targeting, IPRoyal for occasional lower-volume work and Webshare for self-serve testing. Treat those descriptions as starting hypotheses and validate them on your own URLs.
Published price examples
The same guide reports residential examples beginning at the following rates under stated plan conditions. These are vendor-published figures, not like-for-like measurements; volume, minimum commitments, included bandwidth and other terms differ.
| Provider | Reported starting example | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Bright Data | $2.50/GB | Vendor guide figure; plan conditions apply |
| Decodo | $2/GB | Vendor guide figure; plan conditions apply |
| Oxylabs | $2.50/GB | Vendor guide figure; plan conditions apply |
| SOAX | $2/GB | Vendor guide figure; plan conditions apply |
| IPRoyal | $1.75/GB | Vendor guide figure; plan conditions apply |
| Webshare | $1.40/GB | Vendor guide figure; plan conditions apply |
| Rayobyte | Not stated | The comparison names the provider but does not establish a comparable rate |
Do not select a provider from this table alone. A lower nominal rate can become more expensive when blocked requests, retries, geographic surcharges, concurrency limits or large page assets consume additional bandwidth.
How to run a fair proxy trial
Use two or three providers and hold the workload constant. A trial is useful only when the URLs, locations, concurrency and success definition are the same for every candidate.
Recommended Free Tools
- Define a representative URL set. Include the public pages, logged-in flows and geographic variants you will actually process. Record the expected output for each page.
- Choose a session policy. Specify whether each request rotates, whether a sequence must remain sticky, and when a session is discarded.
- Fix concurrency and pacing. Run the same worker count and request schedule for each provider. A test that overloads one candidate but not another is not comparable.
- Capture response quality. Record HTTP status, final URL, content length, a page marker or parsed-field count, and whether a challenge or empty shell was returned.
- Measure latency and bandwidth. Track time to first byte, total time, bytes downloaded and bytes used by retries or assets.
- Calculate effective cost. Divide total spend, including retry traffic and required location premiums, by successful pages—not by total requests.
- Review operational and compliance fit. Check sourcing disclosures, acceptable-use rules, data-processing terms, support channels, concurrency limits and controls for your geography.
Useful success metrics
- Successful-page rate: pages that contain the expected data, not merely HTTP 200 responses.
- Effective cost per successful page: total proxy and API cost divided by valid results.
- Median and tail latency: measure typical responses and slow outliers separately.
- Bandwidth per successful page: include retries, redirects and unnecessary assets.
- Session survival: how often a multi-request flow keeps its cookies and identity.
- Location accuracy: whether the observed country, city or ASN matches the requirement.
Minimal implementation patterns
Provider-specific hostnames and credential formats differ, so substitute the endpoint and credentials supplied by your chosen service. Keep secrets out of source control and rotate them if they are exposed.
Rank #3
cURL through a rotating endpoint
curl --proxy "http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@PROXY_HOST:PROXY_PORT"
--connect-timeout 20 --max-time 90
-A "Mozilla/5.0"
"https://example.com/page" -o response.html
For a provider that rotates on each connection, create a new connection per request. For a sticky session, follow that provider’s documented session parameter or dedicated hostname and reuse the same proxy settings for the sequence.
Python with requests
import os
import requests
proxy = f"http://{os.environ['PROXY_USER']}:{os.environ['PROXY_PASS']}@{os.environ['PROXY_HOST']}:{os.environ['PROXY_PORT']}"
proxies = {"http": proxy, "https": proxy}
with requests.Session() as session:
session.headers.update({"User-Agent": "Mozilla/5.0"})
response = session.get("https://example.com/page", proxies=proxies, timeout=90)
response.raise_for_status()
print(response.url, len(response.content))
Reuse the Session when cookies and a sticky identity are required. Create a new session when your rotation policy calls for an independent request context. Implement bounded retries with backoff and stop retrying permanent authentication or policy errors.
Node.js with undici
import { fetch, ProxyAgent } from "undici";
const proxy = new ProxyAgent(
`http://${process.env.PROXY_USER}:${process.env.PROXY_PASS}@${process.env.PROXY_HOST}:${process.env.PROXY_PORT}`
);
const response = await fetch("https://example.com/page", {
dispatcher: proxy,
headers: { "user-agent": "Mozilla/5.0" }
});
if (!response.ok) throw new Error(`${response.status} ${response.statusText}`);
console.log(await response.text());
Install the supported undici package version for your Node.js runtime, and close the dispatcher when your worker shuts down. Keep concurrency within the provider’s documented limit.
Troubleshooting common failures
407 Proxy Authentication Required
The proxy rejected credentials or the username format. Re-copy the key, confirm whether the provider requires an IP allowlist, URL-encoded special characters or a country/session suffix, and test the endpoint with one request before increasing concurrency.
403, 429 or an interstitial challenge
The target—not necessarily the proxy—may be rate-limiting or fingerprinting the request. Reduce concurrency, respect the site’s rules, preserve cookies for a flow that needs them, and compare a different proxy type or location. Do not respond by endlessly retrying the same blocked request.
Every response is technically successful but contains no data
HTTP status alone is insufficient. Check for a challenge page, JavaScript-only shell, consent wall or an unexpected redirect. Add a content marker or parser validation to your success condition and consider a managed API when browser rendering is required.
Logged-in workflows keep losing the session
You may be rotating too often or failing to retain cookies. Use a sticky session for the complete sequence, keep the same proxy settings, and verify that your cookie jar is shared only within the intended worker.
Costs rise faster than page count
Inspect retries, redirects, images, scripts and other assets. Download only what the parser needs where allowed, set request timeouts, cap retries and calculate bandwidth per successful page. A provider with a lower per-gigabyte quote may lose once these overheads are included.
Latency is unpredictable
Separate connection time, server response time and download time in your logs. Test the same location and concurrency for each provider, then set worker limits based on tail latency rather than an optimistic average.
When a screenshot API is the better tool
If your requirement is a rendered image or PDF rather than extracted HTML, a screenshot API can remove much of the browser and rendering setup. ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try for that job because it removes consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and offers an MCP server for AI agents.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Or skip the browser setup
For a rendered capture, make one request instead of maintaining a browser and proxy workflow. The API returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF; the example below requests a WebP image.

Best Value
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Costs, compliance and operational decisions
Price is only one variable
Compare the total cost of valid output: proxy traffic, managed-API requests, retries, rendering, storage and engineering time. A direct network may be economical for a stable, high-volume workflow that your team can maintain. A managed API can be economically sensible when browser automation, retries or anti-bot handling would otherwise consume substantial engineering capacity.
Use only traffic you are permitted to send
Review each target’s terms, robots guidance where applicable, privacy obligations and applicable law. Review the provider’s acceptable-use policy and sourcing disclosures as well. Location targeting does not change your responsibility for authorization, rate limits or personal-data handling.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are free proxies good for web scraping?
They are generally unsuitable for dependable production work because you cannot assume stable performance, privacy, ownership or permission. If you test one, use non-sensitive public pages and treat the result as exploratory rather than a capacity estimate.
How many proxy providers should I trial?
Two or three is usually enough to expose meaningful differences while keeping the experiment manageable. Use identical URLs, locations, concurrency and success checks for each trial.
Should I rotate on every request?
Only when the workflow allows independent requests. Authenticated or multi-step flows commonly need a sticky session; catalog pages may tolerate or benefit from frequent rotation.

No. Residential, ISP and datacenter labels describe address characteristics, not a guaranteed outcome. Target-specific testing is required.
When should I choose a managed scraping API?
Choose one when you want the provider to absorb more proxy selection, retries, rendering or CAPTCHA-related operations and you accept less low-level control and potentially higher per-page cost.
