Neither is better for everyone. Fit names vary by brand, so judge the particular shirt by its shoulders, chest, waist, sleeves, and length—not its label alone.
What roomy and slim fit mean
“Roomy,” “relaxed,” “regular,” and “classic” are brand-defined terms, not standardized measurements. Even regular fit can mean different things: M&S describes its relaxed shirt as roomy, while Gap describes its regular shirt as having ease through the chest, sleeves, and waist.
Slim fit generally sits closer to the body, especially through the torso and sleeves. M&S describes its slim shirt as snugger through the chest and sleeves; Gap describes its slim shirt as contoured through the chest and waist with slim-cut arms. Ralph Lauren uses its own labels: Classic is its roomiest silhouette, Custom Slim is intermediate, and Slim is its trimmest. These are each retailer’s descriptions, not industry-wide definitions.
Compare the shirt’s actual fit
Check the measurements for the specific garment and compare them with a shirt you already find comfortable. Use the maker’s own chart: two brands’ medium or slim shirts need not have the same dimensions.

| Length | Consider whether the shirt is intended to be tucked in or worn untucked, and how its length works for that use. |
One brand-specific example shows why the label alone is not enough. Mango House’s undated guide, accessed in 2026, lists size M regular-fit measurements as 49.5 cm shoulder width and 114 cm chest, versus 44 cm shoulder width and 110 cm chest for slim fit. Those figures describe Mango House’s garments only; they are not typical measurements for all brands. See Mango House’s size guide.
Choose the silhouette that suits how you wear it
Roomy or relaxed
Choose a roomier cut when ease of movement or a less body-skimming shape matters most. M&S suggests relaxed fit for casual outfits and breathable fabrics such as linen; that is the retailer’s styling guidance, not a rule for every shirt or wearer.

Slim
Choose slim fit if you want a closer outline through the torso and sleeves. For example, Ralph Lauren describes its Slim Fit Oxford Shirt as having a close body fit, fitted sleeves, and higher armholes. Its product page also lists size-medium garment measurements; product details and availability can change.
Account for tucking and comfort
A shirt that feels right across the chest may still bunch at the waist when tucked, or look different untucked. A Reddit user described that specific issue—“the chest seems to fit ok, but the waist is too big so it bunches up a lot when I tuck it in”—but one post is an anecdote, not evidence of how common the problem is. Think about your intended wear before choosing a cut, and assess the shirt in that context.

If the shoulders or collar do not fit, changing only the body cut may not fix the problem. Check the shoulder position and chest comfort first, then consider the waist, sleeves, and length. The useful comparison is between the garment and your fit needs, not simply between the words “roomy” and “slim.”

The retailer guides describe their own fit terminology; they are not independent comparative studies. No reliable published statistic establishes whether consumers generally prefer roomy or slim-fit button-downs.
