According to an Associated Press report published by the Irish Examiner on 1 October 2026, Ronaldo departed Portugal’s camp after coach Jorge Jesus said the forward would not start the Denmark match. Ronaldo said he would explain his reasons “in due course,” but the report did not include that explanation. The Portuguese federation offered few details.
The report also described Ronaldo as having played in his sixth World Cup that year. His departure prompted the question of whether he was done with Portugal or might reconcile with his coach and return at the next international break. The report did not establish an answer.
Is Ronaldo retiring from Portugal?
No retirement announcement or permanent break from the national team was confirmed in the 1 October report. Could Ronaldo face a suspension or fine?
The report said Portuguese football federation disciplinary rules provide for a suspension of one to six months and a fine if a player abandons or fails to attend national-team activities without justification. It also described the rules as providing for automatic preventive suspension. However, it was unclear whether the federation would consider Ronaldo’s departure unjustified, and the report did not say that a suspension, fine or disciplinary proceeding had been imposed.
Who received Portugal’s No. 7 shirt?
After Ronaldo left the roster, Portugal assigned No. 7 to Rafael Leão. The report said UEFA rules required the number to be assigned to another player. That means the No. 7 belonged to Leão on this roster; the report does not establish what number Ronaldo might wear if he returns.

What did Dembélé say about Mbappé?
Speaking ahead of France’s game against Italy, Dembélé dismissed online talk of “little squabbles” and said there was no problem between him and Mbappé. Responding to claims circulating online, he said: “No, nothing. I don’t comment on all of these stories,” and added, “I don’t comment on little squabbles on social media. At 29 years old, I’m not really thinking about that.”
Dembélé praised Mbappé’s contribution to France, saying, “He’s scored an enormous amount of goals. When he’s here we’re very happy because he brings something extra.” He also stressed the importance of the squad: “We don’t win with one, two, or three players.” These remarks describe Dembélé’s public response; the report did not independently establish either player’s private feelings.

What was the Ballon d’Or context in the report?
The 1 October 2026 report said Dembélé was pursuing a second consecutive Ballon d’Or, Mbappé had not won the award, and the ceremony was scheduled for 26 October 2026. Those were contemporaneous claims and a scheduled date as stated in that report, not confirmation of the ceremony’s eventual results.
