Romonet’s proposed contribution was to make CBRE’s augmented-reality (AR) support more useful in live data-center work by adding analytics about equipment, cost and operational efficiency. The 2019 example was an onsite engineer wearing AR goggles while a remote chief engineer guided a switching exercise—effectively putting a second experienced set of eyes beside the technician.

The idea was described as early-stage, not as a proven, universally deployed product. A later IBM-CBRE announcement in 2020 described a related Smart Maintenance service combining AI, AR and analytics at selected CBRE-managed facilities. That announcement is historical; the available evidence does not establish whether the service remains offered in 2026.

What the Romonet-CBRE AR concept was designed to do

CBRE’s early AR work focused on field support. An engineer at a data center could see instructions or assistance while keeping both hands available for operational work, and a remote specialist could observe the situation and advise in real time. Data Center Knowledge reported on April 5, 2019 that the demonstration centered on a remote expert helping an onsite engineer during a switching exercise.

Zahl Limbuwala, then a Romonet co-founder and executive director for the CBRE-Romonet brand, described the goal as “the ability to put, for example, a highly skilled chief engineer on the shoulder of an onsite guy when they’re in the middle of a switching exercise (in the form of AR goggles), so you’ve got a second pair of eyes who may be across the other side of the world.”

In practical terms, AR was the field interface and the remote expert supplied judgment. The technician still performed the physical procedure; the distant engineer could review what was happening, point out risks and help interpret conditions without traveling to the site.

What Romonet analytics could add to an AR view

Romonet’s role was not simply to place video or instructions in front of a technician. The 2019 report described Romonet’s broader analytics as modelling capital and operating costs, tracking energy and water efficiency, and giving finance teams visibility into facility costs. Bringing those data into an AR workflow could connect a physical asset with the operational context around it.

Equipment-level context

An AR view could associate a cabinet, power system or other asset with relevant operating information. The sources do not specify the exact fields, sensors or AR device interface, so a particular overlay design should not be assumed.

Facility cost and efficiency information

Analytics could show how an equipment decision affects capital expenditure, operating expenditure, energy use or water efficiency. That would extend AR beyond step-by-step maintenance: the same view could help an engineer or manager understand the financial and efficiency consequences of a change.

Planning versus live intervention

Remote guidance addresses an immediate task, while Romonet’s modelling addresses planning and performance questions. Combining them could let a team execute work with expert help and then use measured operating data to evaluate the result. The 2019 account did not publish a measured improvement, savings figure or independent performance test.

How remote expertise would work during a switching exercise

  1. Prepare the job. The onsite engineer identifies the planned switching procedure and connects the AR system to the remote support session.
  2. Share the technician’s view. The remote chief engineer sees the relevant equipment and the technician’s actions through the AR setup.
  3. Guide the operation. The remote expert provides instructions, warnings or confirmation while the onsite engineer operates the equipment.
  4. Use available data. Where integrated, equipment and facility analytics could supply additional context about load, efficiency or cost. The published reports do not define a specific data schema or integration method.
  5. Record the outcome. A support platform could retain notes or event information for follow-up, but the sources do not establish what records the 2019 demonstration created.

This model can reduce dependence on having every specialist physically present, but it does not remove the need for site procedures, qualified personnel, communications resilience and safety controls.

What was actually reported about deployment

The 2019 report called the AR application early stage. CBRE was demonstrating it to customers at its London offices, and the report said some clients were already using it in their data centers. Those statements indicate demonstrations and limited client use, not broad deployment, a standard product available in every CBRE facility or a guaranteed compatibility list.

No exact AR-goggle model, software version, supported protocol, current deployment count or independent outcome measurement was provided. An enterprise buyer would need CBRE or the relevant service provider to confirm device, network, security and equipment compatibility.

The announcement also cited IBM’s then-existing support infrastructure:

Figure Qualification
57 remote support centers Worldwide figure stated by IBM in the July 22, 2020 announcement
585 parts centers Figure stated by IBM in the same 2020 announcement
1.3 million parts Number IBM said those parts centers carried in 2020

These numbers describe IBM’s support platform at the time of the announcement. They are not present-day counts and do not prove that every CBRE facility, UPS, server or storage array was covered.

AR guidance, Romonet analytics and Smart Maintenance compared

Capability Primary purpose Lifecycle focus What the sources establish
CBRE AR remote support Let a remote specialist guide an onsite technician during work such as switching Existing operations and intervention Reported as an early-stage application in 2019, with demonstrations and some client use
Romonet analytics Model capital and operating costs and track energy and water efficiency Planning, operations and performance analysis Described as the analytics that could enrich the AR view; no exact overlay specification was published
IBM-CBRE Smart Maintenance Predictive and reactive maintenance using AI, AR and analytics Maintenance of facility plant and IT hardware Announced for selected CBRE-managed facilities in 2020; current availability is not established

What data-center operators should verify before treating it as a current service

  • Availability: Ask whether the specific CBRE or IBM service is still offered, in which countries and under what contract.
  • Equipment scope: Confirm whether coverage includes facility systems, IT hardware or both, and list supported makes and models.
  • AR hardware: Obtain the approved smart-glasses or headset models; the reports name AR goggles as a category but do not endorse a device.
  • Integration: Establish how asset, maintenance, building-management and energy data reach the technician’s view.
  • Security and privacy: Review video handling, identity controls, network isolation, recording retention and remote-access approvals.
  • Operational safeguards: Define who has authority during switching, what happens if the connection drops and how local safety procedures override remote advice.
  • Evidence of value: Request measured results for the facility rather than relying on the historical announcements’ descriptions.

Bottom line

“Taking CBRE’s AR tech to the next level” meant moving from a remote visual aid toward a richer operational tool: a remote expert could guide a technician while Romonet analytics supplied cost and efficiency context. IBM and CBRE later announced a broader AI/AR/analytics maintenance offering in 2020, but the documented material supports a historical account—not a claim that a specific, universally available service exists today.
