The reported vulnerability, CVE-2026-14157, affects firmware in the 3.0.0.6_102 series. Check the support page for your exact router model and install its latest available firmware; until updated, do not upload untrusted VPN files.
How the VPN-file attack works
The reported route involves an attacker who is authenticated to the router’s web administration interface and a malicious VPN configuration file uploaded through that interface. The file can lead to command execution on the router. The report does not establish that an unauthenticated internet user can exploit the VPN import workflow, or that using a VPN client by itself puts a router at risk. Cybernews’s report identifies the issue as CVE-2026-14157.
ASUS routers use VPN configuration files in ordinary setup. ASUS’s guide describes importing a provider-supplied .ovpn file to create and activate a VPN client profile; on some newer firmware, the feature is labeled VPN Fusion. Use a file supplied by your VPN provider or another source you have verified, rather than a file found online simply because it has the expected extension. ASUS’s VPN client setup guide explains the normal workflow.
Which ASUS routers are reported to be affected?
The report names the ASUS 3.0.0.6_102 firmware series for CVE-2026-14157, but the available information does not provide a complete list of affected router models or one firmware version that fixes every model. That means the firmware-family reference alone cannot confirm whether a specific router is affected or fixed.

- Find your router’s exact model number in its administration interface, on its label, or in the documentation.
- Open ASUS Support and search for that model.
- Check the model’s firmware downloads and security information. Install the newest firmware ASUS provides for that model, following its update instructions.
ASUS’s security guidance recommends keeping router firmware current and directs owners to model-specific support information. Availability and version numbers can differ by model, so do not install firmware intended for another router. ASUS Product Security Advisory.
What to do now
Update the router first
Download firmware only from the official support page for your exact model and apply the update using ASUS’s instructions. The sources reviewed do not establish a single fixed version for all affected devices; rely on the current model-specific download rather than assuming a version number applies across the product line.

Pause untrusted VPN imports
Until the applicable update is installed, avoid uploading an OVPN file, as ASUS’s advisory guidance says. After updating, continue to import configuration files only from your VPN provider or another source you can verify. If you do not use the router’s VPN client, there is no need to enable it as a precaution.
Do not treat a factory reset as the main fix
ASUS mentions restoring factory defaults and setting up a router again in troubleshooting guidance, but the material reviewed does not identify a reset as the mitigation for CVE-2026-14157. Update firmware and follow any instructions ASUS gives for your exact model; reset only if ASUS directs you to do so or you have a separate troubleshooting reason.

What is known about exploitation?
Cybernews reported that ASUS had not disclosed whether the router vulnerabilities covered in its story had been exploited in real attacks. That is a lack of public confirmation in the reporting, not proof that exploitation has not occurred. The report also gives no attributable count of affected routers or confirmed victims, so its severity rating should not be read as an estimate of incident scale.
