Rivian has recalled 14 potentially affected 2027 R2 SUVs because a high-voltage battery-pack fastener may not have been tightened correctly. If the fastener is loose, the vehicle could lose drive power while moving, raising the risk of a crash. The repair is free, and Rivian says affected vehicles are being inspected at service centers.
What the Rivian R2 recall covers
The recall is listed as NHTSA campaign 26V625000 and Rivian campaign FSAM-1888. It concerns a fastener on the high-voltage battery pack that may have been under-torqued during assembly. NHTSA’s record identifies 14 potentially affected vehicles; that is the possible recall population, not confirmation that every vehicle has the defect. See the NHTSA recall lookup and the campaign record.
According to TechCrunch’s October 2, 2026 report, a manufacturing operator at Rivian’s Normal, Illinois, factory discovered an under-torqued fastener on September 17, 2026. Rivian investigated and reprogrammed the automated assembly station so it would reject improperly torqued fasteners.
What owners should do
- Check the vehicle by VIN. Enter the R2’s 17-character VIN in NHTSA’s recall lookup. The campaign record says VIN search availability is expected November 28, 2026.
- Contact Rivian or an authorized service location. Ask whether the vehicle is included and arrange any required inspection or repair. Rivian said affected vehicles were being inspected at service centers.
- Have the recall remedy completed. Rivian will inspect and correctly torque the fastener, or repair or replace damaged components if needed. The work is at no cost to the customer.
NHTSA says manufacturers provide safety-recall remedies without charge. Owner letters for this campaign are expected November 28, 2026, according to the campaign record. If you are checking before that date, or a VIN lookup does not yet show the campaign, contact Rivian rather than assuming the vehicle is unaffected.

Why a battery fastener can be a safety issue
The concern is not simply a loose part or a warning light: the reported consequence is possible loss of drive power while the vehicle is being driven. Losing propulsion in traffic can create a crash risk. Rivian told the regulator it was not aware of customer reports, accidents, injuries, or fatalities related to the issue at the time of its filing, as reported by TechCrunch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will the recall cost anything?
No. Rivian’s stated remedy—inspection and correct tightening, or repair or replacement of damaged components—is free to the customer. Because the issue involves a high-voltage battery system, owners should use Rivian or an authorized service location for the recall work, not attempt a do-it-yourself adjustment.
