Which has more range?
It depends on the trim, and the published estimates should not be confused with results from an individual vehicle test.

- R2: Rivian lists 275 miles for Standard and 330 miles for Premium and Performance. The AP/Edmunds comparison also reports a 345-mile estimate for Standard Long Range and 330 miles for most other R2 versions. Rivian cautions that its estimates are preliminary, subject to change, and not official EPA values.
- Model Y: AP/Edmunds reports estimates from 294 miles for base AWD to 357 miles for RWD Premium, depending on configuration.
In Edmunds’ EV Range Test, the R2 Performance covered 304 miles against its 330-mile estimate. The tested base rear-wheel-drive Model Y covered 337 miles, and the Model Y L covered 358 miles. Those are results for the specific vehicles and test reported by Edmunds, relayed by AP—not a controlled, trim-matched test of every version or a guarantee of what a driver will achieve. Can the R2 use Tesla Superchargers, and how fast does each charge?
Rivian says every R2 has a NACS charge port and can use Tesla Superchargers. Rivian advertises adding 150 miles in 15 minutes and charging from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes with DC fast charging. The 15-minute figure reflects optimal conditions; charging speed varies with battery capacity, state of charge, temperature, charger capacity, weather and site conditions. Tesla says the Model Y can add up to 162 miles in 15 minutes. Tesla bases that range-added estimate on constant-speed highway efficiency and says actual results vary with Supercharger type, vehicle configuration, charge state, battery temperature, speed, weather and elevation. In its reported testing, Edmunds found the Model Y charged slightly quicker than the R2. Which SUV has more cargo room and passenger flexibility?
Rivian lists five seats and 90.1 cubic feet of total R2 storage. It breaks that figure down as 28.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 79.4 cubic feet behind the front row when the rear seats are folded. These figures describe different seat configurations, so the folded-seat maximum is not available while carrying rear passengers.

AP/Edmunds reports 75.5 cubic feet of total storage for the five-seat Model Y. Some Model Y versions, including Premium and the extended Model Y L, offer a third row; when those seats are raised, cargo room is reduced. Edmunds/AP describes passenger space as similar overall, with somewhat more rear headroom in R2. It characterizes the Model Y’s ride as smoother and the R2’s as firmer—an editorial assessment, not a measurement that will match every passenger’s preference. Rivian publishes R2 dimensions of 185.9 inches long, 84.7 inches wide, 66.9 inches high and a 115.6-inch wheelbase. For towing, Rivian lists up to 4,400 pounds when the R2 is equipped with its Tow Package; AP/Edmunds reports a Model Y maximum of 3,500 pounds. Which costs less to own?
The available figures do not establish a universal ownership-cost winner. Purchase price is only one part of the calculation, and the destination-included AP/Edmunds figures and Rivian’s manufacturer starting prices use different fee bases. Charging expense depends on local electricity rates and the balance between home and public charging. Rivian notes that off-peak home charging may reduce costs; Tesla likewise says home charging can use lower-cost electricity. Those are cost factors, not a direct comparison of household bills. Tesla estimates annual Model Y maintenance at $316–$643, while cautioning that costs vary with driving habits and model. That is Tesla’s estimate, not an independent figure or a like-for-like comparison with R2. The cited material provides no comparable annual or five-year total-cost study for the two SUVs. Build a comparison for your own household
Use the same location and ownership period for both vehicles. Gather these inputs for the exact trims you are considering:
- Purchase price after destination, options, taxes and registration.
- Financing rate, down payment and loan term.
- Annual mileage and your local electricity rate.
- Expected share of charging at home versus public networks.
- Insurance quotes based on the exact trim, driver and address.
- Expected tire, maintenance and repair costs.
- Expected resale value or depreciation over your chosen ownership period.
Mark unknown figures as assumptions rather than treating them as established costs. This matters especially when comparing an available vehicle with a trim whose timing or local availability may differ.
