The 2026 Kia EV6 is the lower-priced entry point; the Rivian R2 stands out on paper for SUV utility, ground clearance and towing, with three trims offering different power and availability. The right choice depends on the EV6 trim you can buy and the R2 configuration you want—not just the starting prices. Rivian’s listed range figures are preliminary estimates, not official EPA values.
Price and availability: the EV6 costs less to enter
Kia announced a U.S. starting price of $37,900 for the 2026 EV6, plus $1,545 destination. Its detailed pricing page lists the Light Long Range RWD at $41,200. Rivian lists R2 Standard from $44,990 for 2027, Premium from $53,990 for late 2026, and Performance from $57,990, marked available now. These are manufacturer-listed prices, not a comparison of equivalent equipment or local offers.

Rivian says prices and options can change, and taxes and fees vary by state. Kia likewise says price, equipment and specifications can change without notice. Check the current listings and a local quote for the configuration you would actually buy. The listed EV6 starting price is not directly comparable to a higher-output, all-wheel-drive R2 trim; the EV6 Light Long Range RWD price is a separate reference point, not a like-for-like matchup. Kia’s 2026 EV6 pricing announcement and detailed EV6 pricing provide the cited figures. Rivian’s R2 page lists trim prices and timing.
Range and charging: the available figures are not a head-to-head test
Rivian lists preliminary R2 estimates of 275 miles for Standard and 330 miles for Premium and Performance. The company says these estimates are based on the EPA test cycle but are not official EPA values. They should not be treated as EPA-certified range or a prediction of what a particular driver will achieve. A complete 2026 EV6 trim-by-trim EPA range comparison and a common independent test of both vehicles are not established by the cited figures, so there is no supported numerical range winner here.

For charging, the figures available describe different things: Kia lists maximum DC fast-charge input in kilowatts for selected trims, while Rivian gives an ideal-condition charge-time claim. Peak input power is not a direct substitute for the time needed to charge a battery.

Rivian says every R2 has a NACS port and advertises access to more than 21,000 Tesla Superchargers in the U.S. and Canada. Confirm connector or adapter requirements and network availability for the specific vehicle and route before relying on that access. For either SUV, a useful comparison is how charging fits your routine: home charging, dependable stops on your regular routes, and the time your own trips require—not just a peak-kW figure.

Space, ground clearance and towing: R2 has useful published utility figures
Rivian describes R2 as a two-row, five-passenger midsize SUV. Its page lists 90.1 cubic feet of total storage, 28.7 cubic feet of rear cargo area, 79.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, and 9.6 inches of ground clearance. These are Rivian’s figures; the cited material does not establish matched EV6 measurements, so they do not prove a numeric advantage over Kia.

Towing depends on R2 trim and equipment. Rivian lists 3,500 pounds for Standard and up to 4,400 pounds for Premium and Performance with the specified Tow Package. Do not assume the highest capacity applies to every R2. If towing matters, verify the exact configuration and package, then consider whether the vehicle and charging stops suit the trailer and route you plan to use.

- Start with the EV6 if purchase price is the priority. Kia’s announced 2026 starting MSRP is below the listed price of any R2 trim, though destination, equipment, incentives and actual local pricing affect the comparison.
- Consider R2 Standard if you want the lowest listed R2 price and can wait. Rivian lists it for 2027, with single-motor RWD and a preliminary 275-mile range estimate.
- Compare R2 Premium or Performance if you want dual-motor AWD. Premium is listed for late 2026 and Performance as available now; they differ in price and stated horsepower, while both have Rivian’s preliminary 330-mile estimate.
- Give R2 a closer look if clearance, cargo or towing are central to your plans. Its cited utility figures are manufacturer claims, and towing capacity depends on trim and package.
- Choose by charging routine, not a single headline number. Check home-charging access, route coverage, connector details and the specific trim’s charging information. A Level 2 home charger may be useful, but whether you need one depends on your existing electrical service and charging access.
Before deciding, compare the exact EV6 and R2 trims, their current prices and delivery timing, and the equipment each includes. For range, distinguish official EPA ratings from Rivian’s preliminary estimates; for charging, distinguish a claimed ideal-condition time from maximum input power. Those checks are more useful than declaring a universal winner from the figures currently available.
