The 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 5 has the clearer range benchmark today: Hyundai lists up to 318 miles of EPA-estimated range for select rear-wheel-drive trims. Rivian lists up to 330 miles for R2 Premium and Performance, but calls those preliminary EPA-cycle estimates—not official EPA values. On paper, R2’s top figure is higher; it is not yet a certified range win. The better fit depends on charging access, the R2 trim’s delivery timing, and whether you need its listed towing and cargo capabilities.

How much range does each SUV claim?

These numbers do not have the same certification status. Hyundai identifies its 2026 IONIQ 5 figures as EPA estimates. Rivian’s R2 product page says its estimates are preliminary, based on the EPA test cycle, and not official EPA values. Neither set predicts the range a particular driver will achieve in all conditions.

The fairest first comparison is by drivetrain and trim, not just maximum against maximum. The IONIQ 5’s 318-mile figure belongs to specified RWD trims; its listed AWD figures range from 259 to 290 miles. Rivian lists 330 miles for two R2 trims, but the R2 estimates have not been presented as official EPA values. Weather, temperature, driving conditions, settings, and battery configuration affect estimates and actual use.

How fast does each vehicle charge?

Both manufacturers publish 10-to-80% DC fast-charging claims, but charger and vehicle conditions matter. A station’s advertised peak output is not a promise that the vehicle will receive that power throughout a session.

Which connector and network can you use?

Rivian says all R2 vehicles have a NACS port and describes access to the Rivian Adventure Network and Tesla Superchargers. Hyundai’s 2026 IONIQ 5 has a native NACS port for compatible Tesla Superchargers and includes a CCS adapter for other networks, including Electrify America and ChargePoint. Before a trip, check that a specific station is compatible, available, and suitable for your vehicle; Hyundai notes that public charging stations are operated by independent companies and availability is not guaranteed.

What the advertised charge times mean for a trip

Use the figures as conditional manufacturer estimates, not fixed stop durations. Battery state and temperature, weather, charger output, and site conditions can change timing. Hyundai’s approximately 20-minute estimate is specifically tied to a 350-kW, 800V DC charger and the included CCS adapter; its NACS V3/V4 estimates differ by battery size.

Which vehicle is more practical?

Practicality depends on the job the vehicle needs to do. Rivian publishes detailed R2 cargo, passenger, clearance, and towing figures. Hyundai identifies the IONIQ 5 as an electric SUV/crossover and lists Vehicle-to-Load capability for powering devices, subject to its stated limitations. Without comparable Hyundai cargo and dimension figures for equivalent trims, a space or footprint winner cannot be established from the published information cited here.

  • Listed towing capacity is 4,400 pounds for Premium and Performance with applicable tow equipment, and 3,500 pounds for Standard.
  • All-terrain wheel options are listed for some configurations.

These are Rivian’s published specifications, not a direct measurement against an equivalent IONIQ 5 trim. Consider whether the listed towing capacity matches your trailer and equipment, and whether the clearance and wheel choices suit your intended routes.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 features to weigh

Hyundai lists Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), which can power devices within the capability’s stated limitations. That may matter if you want to run equipment from the vehicle. For a space comparison, check current Hyundai specifications for the precise trim you are considering rather than inferring cargo capacity from the vehicle category.

How to make the comparison useful for your needs

  1. Match the drivetrain. Compare RWD with RWD or AWD with AWD where possible; range, price, and equipment vary by trim.
  2. Keep range status attached to the number. Treat Hyundai’s figures as EPA estimates and Rivian’s as preliminary EPA-cycle estimates, not official EPA values.
  3. Check your charging route. Confirm connector compatibility and station availability at the stops you expect to use. Note Hyundai’s included CCS adapter as well as its native NACS port.
  4. Plan stops using conditional times. Do not assume a charger will supply peak power continuously or that a manufacturer estimate will hold in every temperature or battery state.
  5. Compare the capabilities you will use. Check towing equipment and capacity, ground clearance, cargo needs, seating, wheel choice, parking dimensions, and whether Hyundai’s V2L feature is useful to you.
  6. Verify timing and local cost. R2 Standard and Premium have later listed availability than Performance, while the IONIQ 5 is sold through dealers. Confirm current trim availability and local pricing.
