Putting a wet phone in rice is not a reliable recovery method. Apple warns that rice particles could damage an iPhone, and the available guidance does not establish that rice restores water-damaged phones. Instead, disconnect the phone, keep power away from a wet connector, dry the exterior gently, and follow the instructions for your exact model. Immersion, salt water, other liquids, or ongoing problems call for manufacturer or authorized service advice.
What to do if your phone gets wet
- Disconnect it. Unplug any cable and remove accessories. Do not connect a charger while the phone or charging port is wet. Apple warns that charging with a wet connector can corrode the cable or phone pins, potentially causing permanent damage or connection failures; Samsung likewise says not to charge a wet device.
- Switch it off if you can do so safely. This is especially important for a device that is not water-resistant. Samsung advises turning off and arranging inspection for non-water-resistant Galaxy devices after water exposure.
- Dry the outside. Use a clean, soft cloth. Avoid shaking the phone forcefully or putting objects into its port.
- Use only model-appropriate drying guidance. Apple says cool airflow directed toward an iPhone connector may help; Google advises letting a wet Pixel finish drying at room temperature. Samsung warns against heat and compressed air. Do not apply a universal waiting period: the maker’s instructions vary by model and exposure.
- Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model and exposure. Connector moisture, full immersion, fresh water, and other liquids are not interchangeable situations. If the phone was immersed, exposed to a non-water liquid, or continues to malfunction, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
Does putting a wet phone in rice work?
There is no reliable basis here for treating rice as a way to save a phone. Apple specifically cautions against putting an iPhone in a bag of rice, saying rice particles could damage it. That warning is specific to iPhone; it does not establish a measured rice-versus-other-method recovery rate for every phone. Rice should not replace safe drying or professional inspection.
Silica gel is sometimes mentioned as a moisture absorber, but it is not established as a manufacturer-approved fix for a wet phone. Do not treat it as a substitute for the instructions or service recommended by the phone’s maker.
How guidance differs by phone and exposure

Why a phone can seem fine and still need attention
Water resistance depends on the model and its condition; it does not mean waterproof or guaranteed safe after immersion. Samsung warns that internal damage or corrosion may occur even when a device appears to function normally. Google directs owners to repair a water-damaged Pixel. Persistent charging warnings, unusual behavior, or exposure to immersion or contaminated liquid are reasons to seek service rather than rely on apparent normal operation.

What not to do
- Do not charge through a wet port. Wet connector pins can corrode and cause lasting damage or connection failures.
- Do not use heat or compressed air. Samsung warns these can damage the device.
- Do not assume rice, silica gel, or a fixed waiting time is a proven repair. The reviewed manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal recovery method or drying duration.
- Do not rinse a phone based on generic advice. Any rinse instruction is model- and liquid-specific; check the exact manufacturer guidance first.
