Rheinmetall and Italian space company Argotec say their first jointly developed satellite reached orbit on October 1, 2026. Rheinmetall describes the mission as using satellite observations to identify ground-based indicators of emerging airborne threats, with the aim of processing the resulting data and imagery using AI and sharing it with national defense and air-defense systems. The launch is the first step in a planned wider constellation, not proof that the described network is already operational.
What satellite did Rheinmetall and Argotec launch?
The companies have not publicly named the satellite or disclosed its technical specifications. Rheinmetall said it launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on October 1, 2026. The project brings together Rheinmetall Italia S.p.A. and Argotec, an Italian space company. Rheinmetall’s October 2 announcement describes it as the first satellite developed through their partnership; ANSA also reported the October 1 launch.
What is the satellite for?
Rheinmetall says the satellite is intended to observe indicators on the ground that may signal emerging threats from the air. That is a different stated focus from conventional satellite mapping of ground objects: the purpose described by the company is to help detect and assess airborne threats.
The company says acquired situational data and imagery will be processed with AI and made available to national defense and air-defense systems. Its proposed architecture includes space observation, ground nodes, tactical networks and a command-and-control post. These are company-described aims and system elements; the launch announcement does not independently verify their performance or establish that the full architecture is operating.

What is planned next?
Rheinmetall characterizes the program as modular and medium- to long-term, with the space component intended to grow into a broader constellation. The company says another satellite launch is on the roadmap for 2028. That date is a stated plan, not a confirmed launch or evidence that a complete network will be available by then. Rheinmetall’s announcement does not give a schedule for operational service.
What has not been disclosed?
Public information in the launch announcement does not establish the satellite’s mass, orbit, sensor technology, image resolution, revisit rate or communications architecture. It also does not name an end customer, disclose total program cost or confirmed funding, or specify when the described system is expected to become operational. Without those details, the announcement supports an account of the intended mission and development roadmap, but not a judgment about coverage, detection capability, latency or readiness.

Why the companies say the project matters
Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger said: “Integrating space-based data into existing defence architectures is a critical step in addressing the changed security environment.” The remark reflects the company’s rationale for linking satellite-derived information with existing defense systems; the release does not provide operational results showing how that integration performs.
Argotec’s corporate homepage also says the partnership’s first satellite is in orbit.
