An RGB laser projector can put detailed 4K video on a wall, but the result depends on more than the resolution label. Brightness, throw distance, wall surface, room light, color claims and gaming features all affect whether a particular model fits your room. ViewSonic’s LX720-4K RGB is a direct-fit option; ultra-short-throw and higher-brightness alternatives suit different installations.

What RGB laser means in a 4K projector

An RGB laser projector uses separate red, green and blue laser diodes to create its image. RGB describes the light source; 4K describes the image resolution. They are separate specifications, so an RGB light engine alone does not tell you whether a projector accepts or displays 4K video.

ViewSonic lists the LX720-4K RGB as a 4K UHD projector and says its RGB source covers 100% of the BT.2020 color space. That is a manufacturer claim about color gamut, not an independent measurement or a promise that every wall and picture mode will reproduce all those colors accurately. When comparing models, check whether a specification describes color-space coverage, support, or a measured result: those terms are not interchangeable.

Also check the projector’s resolution details before buying. A product’s 4K label does not, by itself, explain whether 4K refers to its native imaging resolution or a supported input format. Confirm that the model accepts the resolution and signal format you intend to use.

Can you project 4K directly onto a wall?

Yes. A bare wall can serve as a projection surface, and a compatible projector can display 4K video on it. The wall does not become a 4K screen, however: bumps, texture, uneven paint, color and ambient light can affect the visible image. A darker room and a flat, neutral-colored surface generally make it easier to see detail and preserve the intended colors.

A dedicated projection screen is the better choice if you want repeatable color, contrast and image geometry. It gives you a consistent surface; a wall’s condition and finish vary from room to room. ViewSonic documents placement adjustments for the LX720-4K RGB, including 1.3x zoom, horizontal and vertical keystone correction, four-corner adjustment and warping. Those tools can help fit an image to a space, but they do not make an uneven wall equivalent to a screen.

XGIMI says its MIRA can automatically adapt to wall colors. That feature may help when the wall is not white, but it does not establish that every wall color, texture or lighting condition will produce screen-like results.

How bright should an RGB projector be?

Start with the size of the image and how much light is in the room. A larger image spreads the projector’s light over more area, while daylight or room lighting makes a projected image harder to see. If you plan to watch with lights on or project a large image, compare higher-brightness options; for a controlled, darker room, a lower published rating may be adequate.

Manufacturer ratings are not automatically apples-to-apples. In particular, the Optoma HCPro-5400 is listed at 5,000 lumens, while ViewSonic gives the LX720-4K RGB a rating in ANSI lumens. Do not treat those labels as identical measurement claims or use the numbers alone to predict the brightness you will see on your wall.

Model Published brightness Manufacturer color specification Light-source life
ViewSonic LX720-4K RGB 2,000 ANSI lumens, according to ViewSonic 100% BT.2020 coverage, according to ViewSonic Up to 30,000 hours, according to ViewSonic
Barco Heimdall 4,500 ANSI lumens, according to Barco REC.2020 support; a coverage percentage is not stated in the cited product information 25,000 hours at full power, according to Barco
Optoma HCPro-5400 5,000 lumens, according to Optoma; the cited specification does not label this figure ANSI lumens 96% BT.2020, according to Optoma Not stated in the cited product information

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent laboratory rankings. The ratings do not establish which projector will look brightest in your room, and the light-source life figures are not directly equivalent: ViewSonic says “up to” 30,000 hours, while Barco specifies 25,000 hours at full power.

Ultra-short-throw or conventional placement?

Choose based on where the projector can sit and how much space you have in front of the wall. An ultra-short-throw model is designed to make a large image from very close to the wall. A conventional installation needs more distance, but may offer a more flexible position or mounting arrangement.

For a projector close to the wall

XGIMI’s MIRA is an ultra-short-throw design. XGIMI specifies about 7.6 inches from the wall for a 100-inch image and about 10.8 inches for a 120-inch image. Those are model-specific placement figures; confirm the installation dimensions and image size for the room before choosing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For flexible placement

The ViewSonic LX720-4K RGB has a 1.3x zoom and documented horizontal and vertical keystone, four-corner and warping adjustments. These features can help position and shape an image where the projector cannot be perfectly centered. For any model, check its installation instructions and throw requirements against the distance available in your room.

This is the all-in-one laser TV replacement for modern living rooms.

What to compare for HDR and gaming

HDR format support and gaming features can narrow the shortlist, but a list of supported formats or input modes does not tell you how the projector performs in every setup. ViewSonic lists HDR and HLG for the LX720-4K RGB. BenQ lists HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG for the V5000i. Optoma lists Dolby Vision and HDR10+ for the HCPro-5400.

  • Gaming response: ViewSonic lists 1 ms input lag and VRR for the LX720-4K RGB. The cited product information does not specify the conditions attached to the 1 ms figure, so do not assume it applies to every resolution, refresh rate or mode.
  • High-refresh input: Barco lists HDMI 2.1 and support for input up to 4K/120 Hz on the Heimdall. Input support is not, by itself, a statement of input lag or a guarantee that every displayed mode runs at 120 Hz.
  • Check your source and connection: Match the projector’s supported inputs and modes to the console, PC or streaming device you plan to use. A feature listed by the projector is useful only if the rest of your setup can supply the corresponding signal.

Which RGB laser projectors are worth comparing?

ViewSonic LX720-4K RGB: a balanced direct-fit option

ViewSonic lists 4K UHD, 2,000 ANSI lumens, HDR/HLG, 100% BT.2020 coverage and an RGB light-source rating of up to 30,000 hours. The listed 1.3x zoom and image adjustments are useful considerations if placement is not straightforward. Its 2,000-ANSI-lumen rating makes room light and image size especially important to assess before choosing it.

BenQ V5000i and V5010i: RGB laser-TV alternatives

BenQ’s V5000i and V5010i are RGB laser-TV alternatives with 4K UHD and smart streaming. BenQ lists HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG for the V5000i. The cited product information does not provide comparable brightness, gamut or light-source-life figures for these models, so compare their full specifications and installation requirements directly rather than inferring those values.

  • Refined Design: Elephant Grey finish and leather-like texture blend warmth and depth into a design made to be proudly displayed anywhere.

Optoma HCPro-5400: a higher published brightness figure

Optoma lists the HCPro-5400 at 5,000 lumens and 96% BT.2020, with Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Its lumen figure is not labeled ANSI in the cited specification, so it should not be directly ranked against the ViewSonic or Barco ANSI-lumen ratings.

Barco Heimdall: high-end installation

Barco lists the Heimdall as a native-4K installation projector with 4,500 ANSI lumens, REC.2020 support, HDMI 2.1 and up to 4K/120-Hz input support. Barco rates its light source at 25,000 hours at full power. The published REC.2020 support does not state a coverage percentage in the cited product information.

How to choose for your room

  1. Measure the wall and seating area. Decide the image size you actually want, then check the projector’s documented throw distance or ultra-short-throw placement for that size.
  2. Assess room lighting. Consider whether you can darken the room and whether the image will be large. Compare manufacturer brightness specifications with their measurement labels intact.
  3. Inspect the projection surface. Look for texture, unevenness and wall color. Use a screen if consistent color, contrast and geometry matter more than avoiding another surface.
  4. Match image and source formats. Confirm the projector’s 4K input details and HDR formats against the device you will connect.
  5. For gaming, verify the exact mode. Check the supported resolution and refresh rate, VRR availability, and the conditions behind any input-lag claim.
  6. Check the installation details. Verify clearances, mounting needs and model-specific compatibility. ViewSonic’s LX700-4K RGB datasheet lists the PJ-WMK-007 mount, but that does not establish that the mount is compatible with the LX720-4K RGB; confirm LX720 compatibility with ViewSonic before purchasing.
