For a screenshot or still image, start with Google Lens, then compare results in TinEye and Bing Visual Search. For a video, extract several keyframes with InVID and search those frames in more than one engine. None of these tools can establish a person’s identity, a clip’s location, or its date from a visual match alone. Treat matches as leads and verify the original posting context and the details visible in the footage.
Which reverse image search tool should you use?
There is no established universal winner for verifying people or places in viral clips. These tools have different strengths, and their results depend on what each service has indexed and can access. Use more than one, then inspect the pages behind the results rather than relying on thumbnail resemblance.

TinEye states that its index contains over 85.9 billion images on its current homepage. That is a vendor-reported index size, not an independent measure of useful coverage or accuracy, and it does not show that TinEye is the best choice for any particular clip.
How to reverse-search a screenshot from a viral video
- Preserve the claim and its context. Record the original post URL, account, date, and wording of the claim. If appropriate, keep an unaltered copy of the media.
- Choose useful stills or frames. For a screenshot, try the full image and crops that isolate distinctive landmarks, signs, uniforms, or background details. For a video, extract several frames from different moments, especially those with distinctive scenery or readable text.
- Search across multiple services. Run stills through Google Lens, TinEye, and Bing Visual Search. For video keyframes, use InVID’s workflow where available, then search frames in more than one engine. Cropping and multi-engine searching are practical ways to explore results, not guaranteed ways to improve them.
- Open the matching pages. Compare page content and dates, not just thumbnails. Follow the most informative match to the page hosting it. A search engine’s “first seen” label or earliest indexed result does not necessarily identify the original capture or publication.
- Check the proposed location independently. Compare visible geography, signage, language, weather, shadows, and buildings with authoritative or locally grounded references. A similar-looking scene is a lead, not confirmation.
- Verify a person’s identity separately. Do not identify someone from visual similarity alone. Seek independent corroboration and consider whether a match could be mistaken or misleading.
- State what remains uncertain. An image can be authentic but still be presented with the wrong date, location, or event description. A failed search does not prove that an image is original or that the viral claim is true.
What reverse image search can—and cannot—show
Image search can surface visually similar content or pages where a matching image appears. Google describes Lens results in those terms; TinEye says it can find matching and modified copies. Neither kind of match, by itself, proves who is pictured, where a scene was filmed, when it was captured, or whether it supports the claim attached to a clip.

TinEye’s FAQ puts one limit plainly: “This means that TinEye cannot find different images with the same people or things in them.” In other words, a tool built to locate matching or altered copies is not necessarily a way to find every other photograph of the same person or place.
The UK House of Commons Library notes that images, videos, and audio can go viral with false claims about what they show, and that checking them can be long and difficult. Privacy considerations before uploading an image
Review each service’s stated data practices before submitting sensitive material. These are vendor descriptions, not independent audits.
- Google: says it may store searched image URLs to improve its products and services.
- Microsoft: says uploaded photos may be used to improve image processing services.
- TinEye: says it does not save, share, or track search images.
If a frame could expose a private person or sensitive location, weigh that risk before uploading it to any online service.
