If you are returning to World of Warcraft after a long break, keep your old Battle.net account, install the modern Retail client, activate game time, and accept the Catch Up Experience offered at character selection. Then use The War Within recap and the Midnight campaign to reach level 90; you do not need to replay every earlier expansion. An active subscription or game time is required for high-level play, and buying Midnight does not replace that subscription. This guide reflects Retail World of Warcraft: Midnight, live since 2 March 2026, and distinguishes it from Classic versions and the separate World of Warcraft: Forever product.
What do I need to play modern World of Warcraft again?
You need three things: access to your existing Battle.net account, active subscription or game time, and the Midnight entitlement for Midnight zones and endgame. Blizzard’s free trial remains available up to level 20, but high-level characters require paid time.
| Question | What to check |
|---|---|
| Can I try Retail? | The free level-20 trial on the selected Battle.net account |
| Can I use old high-level characters? | An active subscription or non-recurring game time |
| Can I enter Midnight content? | Midnight purchased on that WoW license plus active time |
Midnight is sold separately from the subscription. The subscription currently covers levels 1–80 in modern World of Warcraft without the current expansion purchase; Midnight raises the live cap to 90 and unlocks its campaign and endgame. Future expansions are not automatically included in a Midnight purchase.
Subscription and game-time choices (US prices checked November 2026)
| Option | Price and billing | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| 1-month subscription | $14.99 per month; recurring | Testing the return without a long commitment |
| 3-month subscription | $13.99 per month, billed $41.97 every 90 days; recurring | A planned multi-month return |
| 6-month Special Offer | $12.99 per month; recurring offer | Longer-term play when the offer suits you |
| 12-month Special Offer | $12.99 per month; recurring offer | A full-year commitment |
| 60-day prepaid Game Time | $29.99 USD (EUR 25.98), non-recurring | Two months without autorenewal |
| WoW Token | Buy with in-game gold; live gold price varies | Reactivate with gold already on the account |
A prepaid code is redeemed through Battle.net Code Management or Account Management. Battle.net Balance can purchase Game Time but cannot start a recurring subscription. A lapsed account may also show a Reactivate with Gold option at character selection when enough gold is available.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When paid time ends, characters are not deleted. The account returns to Starter restrictions: level 20 access, a gold cap, and limits on auction-house use, mail, trading, and chat. Blizzard notes that upgrading from Starter can take up to 72 hours for all restrictions to clear; changing the password can refresh account status.
How do I recover my old WoW account?
Do not create a new Battle.net account unless support confirms that the original cannot be recovered. Characters, collections, achievements, appearances, and Warband information remain attached to the original account and its WoW license.
- Use Blizzard’s “Can’t Log In?” account-recovery flow to locate the account, reset its password, unlock it, or resolve an authenticator problem.
- If you suspect a compromise, secure the computer and email account first, request account restoration, change the Battle.net password, and attach a Battle.net Authenticator.
- After signing in, verify the correct region and select the WoW license that contains your characters. A visible character list does not prove that game time is active.
- If self-service recovery fails, open a Blizzard Support request for a Game Master and provide ownership details requested by support.
Returning players sometimes find several WoW licenses under one Battle.net login. Check the selected license before buying time or Midnight; purchasing on the wrong license will not unlock the characters you intend to play.
Which WoW client should I install?
In the Battle.net desktop app, select World of Warcraft, choose the modern Retail version, select the correct WoW license, choose Install, and then Play. Do not select Classic or WoW: Forever unless that is the version you actually want.
Retail system requirements
- Windows 10 64-bit or later supported Windows installation.
- A four-core, 3.0 GHz-class processor.
- DirectX 12 graphics hardware with 3 GB of video memory.
- At least 8 GB RAM; Blizzard recommends 16 GB.
- An SSD with 128 GB of available space.
- A keyboard and mouse; Blizzard recommends a multi-button mouse with a scroll wheel.
Update the operating system and graphics drivers before installing. If the Battle.net app lists several products, the Retail entry is the one for Midnight raids, Delves, Housing, and the current level-90 campaign.
What should I do first after logging in?
Choose the Catch Up Experience from the Campsite, Blizzard’s name for the character-selection screen, if it is offered. The scenario is intended for players away for more than 60 days and is the quickest way to replace obsolete gear, settings, and muscle memory.

- At the Campsite, select Catch Up Experience rather than “pick up where you left off.”
- Follow the scenario to the Arathi Highlands, where Thrall and Jaina introduce the current flow.
- Let it hide the old quest list while it retrains class basics, interrupts, Skyriding, and current objectives.
- Accept the level-appropriate gear and the suggested next steps.
Skipping is safe: old quests are not deleted. You can start the tutorial later from Adventure Guide (Shift+J) > Tutorials. Blizzard recommends taking it, while the official partner guide and JudgeHype describe the more-than-60-day eligibility rule. JudgeHype also reports 24-slot bags as a catch-up reward; treat that bag size as a secondary report rather than a universal promise.

Assisted Highlight is at ESC > Options > Gameplay Enhancements. It illuminates the next recommended damage ability; healing, defensive, and buff decisions remain manual. For a simpler bar, open Spellbook with N, find Single-Button Assistant in the upper-right area, and drag it to an action bar. It cycles a priority block with a small extra global-cooldown cost, so it is a relearning and accessibility aid, not a replacement for learning a full class rotation.
How do I catch up on the story without replaying everything?
Use The War Within recap, then start the current Midnight campaign. Do not clear every old expansion first.
The War Within recap
The accelerated recap runs from the Isle of Dorn to K’aresh and includes key cinematics. It is also the efficient 70–80 route for newer characters. Lorewalker Cho in Stormwind, Orgrimmar, or Dornogal offers curated level-10 storylines covering Blood Elves and Void Elves, Xal’atath, Ethereals, and The Lich King, with toy and Housing-decoration rewards.
After the recap, follow Midnight campaign quests marked with shielded exclamation points. The campaign is the intended route toward level 90. Story Mode can provide Dragonflight and The War Within raid narratives after max level and the relevant campaigns, but it is not a substitute for Midnight’s current raid.

Warbands and the Campsite
All characters on a Battle.net account appear in one Campsite. Warband features include shared renown, a Warband bank, account-wide achievements, and appearance sharing across classes and armor types that can equip an item. You can mark favorites and customize the Campsite background.
Journeys and the Great Vault
The Journeys tab in Adventure Guide centralizes Renown, Delves, Prey, and Great Vault tracking for Midnight. Open it rather than relying on old guides, because Season 1 maps and item-level tables are obsolete.
Skyriding and Steady Riding
Skyriding replaced Dragonriding’s Vigor resource. Surge Forward and Skyward Ascent now share six charges. At level 20, open the mount tab and switch Flight Style; the change has a grounded five-second cast and toggles Steady Riding. Most flying mounts can Skyride, but some ottuks, fish, and brooms cannot. Khaz Algar restricts Skyriding until The War Within Pathfinder is completed.

Transmog and Housing
Transmog now supports saved full outfits, extra slots purchased with gold, and outfits placed on action bars. Legacy appearances were converted to Custom Sets. Midnight Housing gives every player a home with no lottery, purchase cost, or upkeep; homes are shared across the Warband and support cross-faction visiting. It is a useful side system, but combat catch-up should come first.
Delves, Prey, and Apex Talents
Delves are short solo or up-to-five-player instances with a talent-tree companion: Brann in The War Within and Valeera Sanguinar called out for Midnight. They are available in current zones and are the strongest low-pressure re-entry option. Prey sends you after elite targets that can hunt you back and is tied to the season. Midnight’s road to 90 also includes Apex Talents; rebuild from the live talent interface instead of importing an old talent string blindly.
Which activity should I choose after reaching level 90?
Pick one current lane rather than trying to master every system at once. Season 1 leftovers are not the long-term target.

Midnight Season 2 gearing
Patch 12.1 content includes the Coiled Isle off Zul’Aman, Ring of Glory, Gnarldor Isle, and Venomfall Deeps Delves, plus the Altar of Fangs dungeon. Season 2’s Venomous Abyss is an eight-boss raid ending with Ula’tek. Aitude’s summary of Icy Veins’ Season 2 gearing states that a full upgrade of one gear piece costs 100 crests and the weekly cap is also 100, allowing one fully upgraded piece per week. Exact item-level breakpoints should be read from the live Journeys panel rather than a Season 1 chart.
What should my first week back look like?
- Complete Catch Up Experience if it appears.
- Disable broken addons and rebuild action bars and talents from the current specialization interface.
- Run the War Within recap and progress the Midnight campaign toward 90.
- Count your gold, list genuinely surplus Auction House items, and reserve enough for repairs and consumables.
- Choose one activity: a Delve, Normal or Heroic dungeon, outdoor or Prey content, or relaxed PvP.
- Open Journeys and check the Great Vault after the weekly reset.
- Only then spend time on Housing, transmog, professions, and old campaigns.
Aitude’s practical sequence uses the first day for the guided walkthrough and bank count, days two and three for a gathering route, day four to list surplus, day five for small upgrades, one weekend group session, and the next reset for the Vault. Crests, rather than a large gold stockpile, pace Season 2 gear upgrades in that summary.

Do I need to rebuild my addons?
Midnight’s base UI now includes damage meters, nameplates, boss alerts, and scaling, so addons are optional for casual play. Returning addon packages often break after a long absence.

What should I deliberately ignore?
- Most old side quests, obsolete Season 1 currencies, and retired upgrade tracks.

- Immediate Mythic+ or rated PvP if your class flow is unfamiliar.
- Creating a new Battle.net account or abandoning an account with your collections.
- Third-party gold buying and paid boosting. The documented in-game gold-to-time route is the WoW Token.
How do I avoid the Retail, Classic, and Forever version trap?
“WoW” can mean different Battle.net products. Retail Midnight is the modern level-90 game. Classic includes Era, Mists of Pandaria Classic, Anniversary, Hardcore, and Season of Discovery. World of Warcraft: Forever is a separate product expected on 4 November 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST.
Forever is a reimagined level-1–60 world with more than 1,000 new quests, Mount Hyjal, Shen’dralas, Riverglades, Zephras Isle, nine new dungeons, new race/class combinations, the Skyborne feature in the Heroic Pack+, a Legacy System, and Normal, PvP, RP, and RP-PvP rulesets; Hardcore is planned later. Access is included with an active WoW subscription or Game Time, but Forever has a separate installation and separate characters. Friends saying they are “playing WoW” is not enough—confirm the client, realm, and ruleset before installing or creating a character. Classic characters cannot group across realms in the way modern Warbands suggest.
What if the game still looks wrong after I pay?
- Paid but locked: confirm the selected region and WoW license, then allow up to 72 hours for Starter restrictions to clear.
- Characters missing: sign out and back into the original Battle.net account; check every WoW license under that login.
- Wrong version installed: return to the Battle.net product list and choose Retail, not Classic or Forever.
- Missing bars or abilities: disable all addons, reset the current specialization from the live talent UI, and re-enable updated addons one at a time.
- Account compromised: secure the email and computer, reset the password, add an Authenticator, and contact Blizzard Support for restoration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does buying Midnight replace a WoW subscription?
No. Midnight is an expansion entitlement, while an active subscription or Game Time supplies access for high-level play. You need both to use Midnight endgame content.
Should I make a new character instead of returning to my old main?
Usually keep the old main so you retain its achievements, appearances, renown, and Warband progress. Midnight includes an Enhanced Level 80 Character Boost, which is useful for an alternate class, but it does not transfer the identity of your original character.
Can I play WoW for free while deciding whether to subscribe?
The official trial allows play up to level 20. It does not restore unrestricted access to high-level characters, the auction house, mail, trading, or other Starter-limited systems.
Where do I find the Catch Up Experience if I skipped it?
Open the Adventure Guide with Shift+J and select the Tutorials tab. The scenario remains available there, and skipping it does not erase your old quests.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs WoW: Forever the same game as Midnight?
No. Forever is a separate 1–60 reimagining with its own installation, realms, rulesets, and characters. The same active subscription can include access, but players seeking current Midnight raids must launch Retail.
