RetroSpace is a sci-fi horror immersive sim about a janitor trying to survive aboard Aurora 5 after the station is swallowed by a sentient black hole. The launch coverage describes a mix of stealth, combat, hacking and environmental problem-solving, alongside mutation upgrades and a cloning system that makes death consequential.
What is RetroSpace about?
Developed by The Wild Gentlemen and published by Kwalee, RetroSpace casts the player as a janitor aboard Aurora 5. A sentient black hole swallows the station, leaving its crew and corridors transformed. The station is now home to animal-and-plant hybrids, dangerous systems and disruptions involving time.
The premise pairs sci-fi horror with dark humour and a disco-punk aesthetic. Aurora 5 is described as an interconnected environment with a central hub, hidden areas, shortcuts and alternate routes, giving players more than one way to move through the station.
How does RetroSpace play?
The launch article presents RetroSpace as an immersive sim with action-adventure elements, not a combat-only game. Its described options include:

#1 Best Overall
- Stealth: Sneak past threats rather than confronting them directly.
- Hacking and diversions: Manipulate systems or draw enemies away to create an opening.
- Traps and environmental tactics: Lure creatures into traps or turn station hazards and security systems against them.
- Direct combat: Fight threats head-on when avoiding them is not the approach you choose.
The article does not rank these methods or provide performance or difficulty comparisons, so it does not establish one as the best strategy. The appeal is the range of approaches it describes.
What are Mutamods?
Mutamods are upgrades that can affect combat, stealth, exploration and mobility. They are not described as risk-free: the article warns that some mutations can have unexpected, irreversible side effects. It does not explain the specific effects or how players choose or remove them, so treat the system as a source of consequential trade-offs rather than a fully documented upgrade tree.

- A black hole has a gravitational pull that is so intense that nothing, not even light, can escape it once inside a certain region, called the event horizon.

What happens when you die?
Death leads to a station-produced clone. According to the launch article, cloning can cause degenerations, and a player may need to recover gear from a previous incarnation. The article does not specify how often these effects occur, what forms they take or exactly how gear recovery works.
