Choose a YouTube Live bitrate from your measured, sustained upload speed—not your broadband plan’s advertised download speed. A conservative rule of thumb from Restream is to keep video bitrate at or below half of your upload speed, then test a stream with realistic audio and movement. It is a heuristic, not a guarantee, and there is no single bitrate preset established for all Indian broadband connections.
How to choose a bitrate that your connection can sustain
- Measure upload performance. Run a speed test on the same connection and, if possible, the same device and network setup you will use to stream. Base the decision on upload speed and stability, not the plan’s download figure. Restream’s July 9, 2026 guidance suggests keeping video bitrate no higher than half of upload speed; treat this as a cautious starting point, not a promise that the stream will remain stable. - Choose resolution and frame rate. Pick an output your upload can sustain before settling on a bitrate. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations are codec-specific; do not apply these figures to the H.265/HEVC or AV1 columns of its live encoder settings.
- Set the encoder basics. YouTube recommends CBR (constant bitrate), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and RTMPS. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. Select the bitrate guidance for the codec actually configured in your encoder.
- Test before relying on the stream. Include audio and movement similar to the planned content. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast. Restreamer’s YouTube connection guide says its main window displays the live stream bitrate once connected to YouTube Live. That confirms the outgoing bitrate, but does not replace a sustained upload test or YouTube’s stream-health checks.
YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendations
The figures below are YouTube’s recommendations for H.264 ingestion, not measurements of Indian broadband. YouTube’s page does not state a publication year for these values.

The 720p figures are the same at 30 and 60 fps in YouTube’s H.264 table. For 1080p, the figures differ by frame rate. If your connection cannot sustain a recommended setting with headroom, try a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers, so the encoder’s ingest bitrate is not a bitrate every viewer must receive.
What “slow Indian broadband” means for your setting
There is no India-wide preset supported by the cited platform guidance: it does not establish what any particular Indian ISP plan will sustain. Upload capacity and consistency vary by connection and conditions. Use your own test results, allow room below the measured upload rate, and validate the setting in a representative stream rather than assuming a plan’s advertised speed is available continuously.

If the stream is unstable or picture quality is poor, reduce the encoder bitrate, resolution, or FPS, then test again. Restream’s encoder troubleshooting guidance recommends these adjustments. If local Wi-Fi variability is a suspected factor, a wired Ethernet connection may be worth trying; it cannot increase the capacity of an ISP connection that is itself insufficient.
Restreamer: check the outgoing bitrate
After connecting Restreamer to YouTube Live, look in Restreamer’s main window for the displayed stream bitrate. Compare that outgoing value with your chosen encoder setting and check YouTube stream health as well. A bitrate display alone cannot establish that your upload connection will remain reliable over a long broadcast.
