Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If your Restream broadcast reaches YouTube but shows a black picture, check the pre-recorded file first: Restream requires a supported container, H.264 video, AAC audio, and a keyframe setting of 2. Then check the outgoing YouTube stream settings and run a private or unlisted test. Restream’s help pages document these checks, but do not identify one confirmed cause of this exact black-screen symptom.
1. Check the pre-recorded source file
Restream’s pre-recorded video requirements distinguish required file settings from optional recommendations. Start by checking the file you uploaded—not just the settings you intended to use when exporting it.
| Setting | Restream requirement or recommendation |
|---|---|
| Container | MP4, MOV, M4V, or MKV required |
| Video encoding | H.264 required |
| Audio codec | AAC required |
| Keyframe setting | 2 required |
| Resolution | 1080p (1920×1080) recommended, not mandatory |
| Frame rate | 30 or 60 FPS recommended, not mandatory |
| Rate control | CBR recommended, where supported |
Inspect the file’s actual codec and keyframe settings with your media player or export tool; a file ending in .mp4 does not by itself confirm that its video is H.264 or its audio is AAC. If a required setting is wrong, export a compliant test copy and upload that. Restream describes a conversion tool for turning unsupported formats into MP4, but conversion alone is not a guaranteed fix for every black screen.
2. Check the outgoing YouTube stream settings
The uploaded video’s encoding and the live feed sent to YouTube are separate settings layers. In Restream’s YouTube streaming guide, the platform recommendations include H.264, 240p–2160p, up to 60 FPS, CBR, and a 2-second recommended keyframe interval (4 seconds maximum). The bitrate depends on the resolution and frame rate, so there is no single bitrate to apply to every stream.

- Confirm the outgoing encoder is set to H.264 and uses CBR if your workflow allows it.
- Check the keyframe interval against YouTube’s 2-second recommendation and 4-second maximum.
- Match resolution and frame rate to the source and your encoder’s capabilities; do not assume the file-upload recommendations are mandatory live-stream settings.
3. Run a private or unlisted test broadcast
Before changing multiple settings at once, make a private or unlisted YouTube test and inspect the event while Restream is sending the video. Restream documents this as a way to check how the broadcast connects to and appears on the destination platform: How to test your stream before going live.
- Set up a private or unlisted test event on YouTube.
- Send the same pre-recorded video through the same Restream workflow.
- Check whether the YouTube event shows a picture and whether audio is present.
- If practical, compare that result with the source file playing locally and with a direct YouTube stream.
These comparisons can help narrow down where the symptom occurs, but Restream does not present them as a validated test that pinpoints a specific component. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether a result changed.

4. If the broadcast will not start or appear, check the YouTube connection
If the stream is not starting or YouTube is not receiving it—not merely receiving a live stream with black video—follow Restream’s YouTube start troubleshooting guidance:
- Verify that the YouTube channel is connected and the event is configured for the intended workflow.
- Reconnect the YouTube channel in Restream if needed; Restream’s guidance includes removing and re-adding the channel.
- Reset the stream key if the connection still does not work, then make sure the correct key is configured for the event.
- Try streaming directly on YouTube to compare. Restream’s help page says, “Try going live directly on YouTube without using Restream.”
A channel reconnect or stream-key reset is relevant when the connection or broadcast fails to start; it is not proof of a fix for a stream that is already live but displays black video.

5. Check how the YouTube event was created
If you created the event in YouTube’s mobile app, Restream says that event type is mobile-streaming-only and is not supported for streaming through Restream. Create an event that supports the Restream workflow rather than trying to send to a mobile-only event.
6. Allow for platform processing at the video edges
Restream recommends adding 15–20 seconds at both the beginning and end of a pre-recorded video so destination platforms have time to process the incoming stream without cutting into important material. Its example is an intro and outro screen. This is an edge-buffer recommendation, not a diagnosis for a black picture throughout the broadcast. See Restream’s pre-recorded video requirements.

7. Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Next check |
|---|---|
| The broadcast will not start or YouTube does not show an incoming stream | Check the channel connection and event type; reconnect the channel or reset the key if needed, then compare with a direct YouTube stream. |
| The event is live, but the picture is black | Check the source file’s required container, H.264 video, AAC audio, and keyframe setting. Then inspect outgoing YouTube settings and run a private or unlisted test. |
| Audio is present but the picture is not | Recheck the source video encoding and outgoing video settings. The available Restream guidance does not establish audio-only output as a specific diagnosis. |
| The event was made in YouTube’s mobile app | Use an event type that supports streaming through Restream; mobile-app-created events are limited to mobile streaming. |
| The issue persists after compliant settings and a test | Record the evidence below and contact Restream support for case-specific help. |
8. What to include when asking for help
Restream’s cited guidance recommends support for complex cases but does not publish a black-screen-specific checklist. A concise report can still make the problem easier to reproduce:
- The source file’s container, video codec, audio codec, and keyframe setting.
- The workflow used to send it (including encoder or Restream setup) and the outgoing resolution, frame rate, rate control, and keyframe interval.
- How the YouTube event was created and whether it is private, unlisted, or public.
- Whether the stream is live, whether audio is audible, and what appears in a private or unlisted test.
- Whether the same source works in a direct YouTube stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
