For a YouTube-only podcast stream, use OBS Studio to produce and send the show directly to YouTube. Add Restream when you want a cloud relay to distribute that OBS output to other platforms. Neither setup is documented as guaranteeing uninterrupted 24/7 operation, and YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured in its archive. Plan a separate recording and a way to respond to interruptions.
Restream vs. OBS: what each one does
| Question | OBS Studio | Restream |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Free, open-source production and streaming software. Build scenes, compose sources, mix audio, and apply filters on your computer. OBS Studio | A cloud multistream relay that can receive an OBS output and distribute it to selected destinations. Restream’s OBS connection guide |
| Send to YouTube only | Connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and key; no relay is needed. | Can be part of the workflow, but adds a relay when YouTube is the only destination. |
| Send to multiple platforms | A local setup requires suitable computer resources and enough upload capacity for the workflow. | Receives one incoming stream and distributes it to destinations. Restream’s Help Center lists two channels on its free plan; three or more channels and some destination types require a paid plan. Check its current limits before choosing a plan. Restream plan guidance |
| Where production happens | On the computer running OBS. | OBS still handles production; Restream provides the cloud relay. |
| Continuous uptime guarantee | Not established in the cited documentation. | Not established in the cited documentation. |
This is a feature comparison, not a controlled reliability test. The documentation does not establish that one option stays online longer than the other.
Which should you use for a podcast?
Choose OBS alone for YouTube
Use OBS directly when YouTube is your only destination and you want control over scenes, guest or clip sources, overlays, and audio mixing. It avoids adding a relay to a one-destination workflow. Your computer and network remain part of the streaming chain.
Add Restream when you need a cloud relay
Keep OBS as the production interface and connect it to Restream if you want one incoming OBS stream distributed to multiple platforms. A relay can simplify the computer-side distribution setup, particularly when sending to more than two channels. The number of available channels and destination types depends on Restream’s current plan; verify its plan details, including any branding, recording, or video-quality limits, before committing.

For an always-on YouTube stream, consider a cloud-hosted alternative
StreamNeo is #1 among the 24/7 YouTube streaming options here: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. It is different from OBS plus Restream: StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube rather than acting as a live-camera production setup or a multistream relay. See StreamNeo.
How to set up OBS with YouTube or Restream
Before you start
- Make sure the YouTube channel is eligible for live streaming and has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. For a first-time setup, YouTube says enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Decide whether YouTube is the only destination. If it is, connect OBS directly; if you want multiple destinations, decide whether Restream’s relay and current plan limits suit you.
- Prepare the show’s audio, video, and any clips or music, and confirm that you have the rights to broadcast them.
- Choose a recording plan. Do not treat YouTube’s automatic archive as the only backup for an always-on stream.
OBS directly to YouTube
- Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. Complete any required channel verification and allow for first-time enablement, which may take up to 24 hours.
- Create the live stream in YouTube Studio. Open the encoder workflow and copy the stream URL and stream key provided for the event. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it, and replace it if it is exposed.
- Configure OBS. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, then enter or connect the stream key. If using a custom server workflow, use YouTube’s stream URL and key as directed by its encoder setup. OBS’s exact labels can vary by version.
- Build and check the show. Set up the needed scenes and sources, check microphone levels and other audio, and confirm that overlays and video sources appear as intended.
- Set output to match your connection and program. Use YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for an appropriate resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Choose a bitrate your sustained upload can support; do not assume a brief speed test represents long-term capacity. YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Start a private or unlisted test first. Check YouTube’s live preview and stream health while speaking, playing representative clips, and moving through the scenes you plan to use. Confirm the audio is intelligible and synchronized before making the show public.
- Start the scheduled stream. In OBS, start streaming, then verify that YouTube receives the signal and that the event is live as intended.
- Start local recording if needed. Watch the recording indicator and confirm the file is growing. Keep an independent copy if preserving the episode matters.
OBS through Restream
- Connect the destinations in Restream. Select the channels you want to use and confirm that the destinations and channel count are available on your current plan.
- Connect OBS to Restream. Follow Restream’s documented account-connection or manual stream-key setup. For a manual setup, enter Restream’s ingest server and stream key in OBS rather than the YouTube key. Connect OBS to Restream.
- Test the relay and each destination. Start a test output and confirm that Restream receives the OBS feed and that the intended platforms receive it. Check audio, video, and stream health at YouTube as well.
- Record independently. Restream’s role as a relay does not remove the need to decide how you will preserve the podcast recording and handle a dropped destination.
How do you keep a 24/7 stream running?
A 24/7 broadcast needs more than a successful start. Treat the encoder, computer and network, destination, recording, and operator response as separate parts of the plan. The cited OBS, Restream, and YouTube documentation does not establish an automatic restart method or a guaranteed continuous-uptime setup.

Will YouTube save an always-on livestream?
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. For a continuous podcast channel, use local recording or another independent recording plan if the full program must be preserved. YouTube archive guidance.
