For a YouTube-only 24/7 stream, OBS can send your broadcast directly to YouTube; Restream is an additional distribution service that is useful when you want to send one feed to multiple platforms. They are not strict alternatives: you can use OBS as the encoder and Restream to distribute its output. Neither service’s cited documentation guarantees uninterrupted streaming. If you want a continuous YouTube stream without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: it loops uploaded videos and recovers automatically if YouTube drops the stream.

What is the difference between Restream and OBS?

OBS is streaming and production software that encodes a video feed and sends it to a streaming destination. Restream is a service layer: it can receive a feed from software such as OBS and distribute it to multiple platforms. Restream also documents its own browser-based Studio and a way to schedule prerecorded video as live. These are different workflows, not evidence that one option produces better video or guarantees more reliable uptime. Restream describes its multistreaming workflow; its Help Center lists ways to go live.

Choose direct OBS when YouTube is your only destination

If you only need YouTube, OBS can provide the encoder workflow without adding Restream’s multistream distribution layer. You still depend on the computer, network, power, OBS, and YouTube connection staying operational.

Choose Restream when you need multiple destinations or its service workflow

Restream is relevant if the same feed needs to go to YouTube and other platforms, or if you specifically want to use its Studio or prerecorded-video scheduling. The presence of a scheduling feature does not, by itself, establish that every plan or setup supports an unattended 24/7 loop.

Use both when production and distribution are separate needs

OBS and Restream can work together: OBS produces and encodes the stream, then Restream distributes it to multiple destinations. Restream also documents a specialized OBS plugin workflow for simultaneous landscape and portrait YouTube events; that is not necessary for one ordinary landscape stream. To add a YouTube channel to Restream, its setup instructions require that you own the channel, rather than having only manager or editor access. See Restream’s YouTube setup guidance.

How to decide for a continuous YouTube broadcast

Need Better fit What to consider
One YouTube stream, encoded on your own computer OBS direct to YouTube No multistream distribution layer is needed, but your computer, power, and network must keep running.
One feed sent to YouTube and other platforms OBS with Restream, or another Restream workflow Restream documents multistream distribution; neither source establishes uninterrupted availability.
A browser-based production workflow Restream Studio Check that the Studio workflow and account setup fit your source material and continuous-broadcast needs.
Scheduled prerecorded video Restream’s prerecorded-video scheduling, if the available plan and workflow meet the need The existence of scheduling does not prove support for a continuous loop on every plan.
Uploaded videos looped from the cloud to YouTube, without a home computer left on StreamNeo StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed.

What 24/7 means for uptime and replays

Restream’s duration guidance includes a maintenance caveat

Restream says it has no stream-duration limit, but warns that a server may undergo maintenance and restart when a stream has run continuously for more than 24 hours. It suggests restarting the stream every 24 hours to help prevent potential issues. That is Restream’s operational guidance, not a report that every stream will be interrupted or a guarantee that daily restarts prevent outages. Restream: “How long can I stream for?”

A 24/7 signal is not one guaranteed 24/7 replay

YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Restream’s YouTube setup page also says that YouTube archives streams under 12 hours. Do not assume a continuous 24/7 broadcast will be saved as one complete replay; delivery and replay archiving are separate requirements. YouTube: encoder streaming.

Plan for maintenance and interruptions

A local OBS stream depends on your computer, power, network, encoder, and the platform connection. Restream’s possible maintenance restart is an additional operational consideration when you use its service. The cited documentation does not establish failover guarantees for either workflow, so plan to monitor the broadcast and recover it if it stops.

Set up a direct OBS-to-YouTube stream

Exact OBS and YouTube interface labels can change. The essential workflow is to enable YouTube live streaming, configure OBS as the encoder, and send it the stream key for the intended broadcast. Use YouTube’s current encoder help for the live control-room and stream setup details. First-time activation may take time: Restream’s current YouTube setup instructions say live streaming must be enabled, phone verification completed, and first-time activation allowed 24 hours. Treat that as setup guidance, not a promise that every account is activated instantly after the wait. Restream’s YouTube setup page.

  1. Prepare the YouTube channel. Enable live streaming and complete any verification or first-time activation steps shown for your account. Do this ahead of the planned launch if the channel has not streamed live before.
  2. Create or open the intended YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, set up the broadcast and locate the stream key or connection details for that event. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to the stream.
  3. Configure OBS as the encoder. In OBS, select YouTube as the service if available, or use the server and stream-key method provided by YouTube. Enter the key for the correct broadcast and configure the scene, audio, and video source you intend to leave running.
  4. Check the connection before going live. Use Ethernet where practical, verify that the upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate, and watch OBS’s connection indicators for dropped frames. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi may be unstable.
  5. Start the stream and verify it in YouTube Studio. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the expected video and audio before treating the broadcast as live. Keep a way to monitor the stream and restart OBS or reconnect if the session ends.
  6. Schedule maintenance for a long-running broadcast. Check the stream periodically and plan any restart or content change deliberately. Do not count on a 24/7 stream automatically producing one complete YouTube replay.

Keep the OBS connection stable

Use bitrate as a capacity decision, not a fixed magic number

OBS says dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or a bitrate higher than the connection can sustain. Its troubleshooting guidance gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate. That is not a universal bitrate requirement: leave capacity for other network traffic and account for the streaming service’s limits and the stability of the connection. If frames drop, lower the bitrate and check whether the connection stabilizes. OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

Prefer wired networking when possible

OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming because Wi-Fi may be unstable. Ethernet, including a Cat6 cable where appropriate for the setup, can avoid some wireless variability. It cannot prevent an ISP outage, router or power failure, platform interruption, or computer failure.

Diagnose dropped frames before changing multiple settings

  • Dropped frames while OBS is sending: check whether the upload connection is unstable or the bitrate exceeds sustainable capacity; reduce bitrate and test again.
  • Wireless connection fluctuates: connect the computer to the router by Ethernet if practical.
  • YouTube is not receiving the stream: confirm that the correct stream key and destination are configured, and that live streaming is enabled for the channel.
  • The stream stops after a long run: check the local computer and network as well as any service maintenance guidance. Restarting may restore a session, but no cited source promises uninterrupted delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use OBS and Restream together?

Yes. OBS can encode the stream, while Restream distributes its output to multiple platforms.

Does Restream’s no-duration-limit statement mean a 24/7 stream cannot restart?

No. Restream warns that maintenance may restart a server after more than 24 continuous hours and suggests restarting daily to help prevent potential issues.

Will YouTube save a complete replay of a 24/7 stream?

The cited YouTube guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not establish that a continuous 24/7 stream will be saved as one complete replay.
