If Restream says your YouTube stream key is invalid, the fix depends on how you connected YouTube. For an integrated YouTube channel, Restream’s recommended recovery is to remove the channel from Restream, reset the key in YouTube Studio, then add the channel again. If you configured an existing YouTube event with Custom RTMP, check that event’s stream URL and key in the matching Restream fields instead.
First identify how YouTube is connected
Restream has two distinct setups for YouTube, and their credentials are handled differently:

If you are unsure which method you used, check Restream’s Channels area. An authorized YouTube channel uses the integrated connection; a manually configured destination uses Custom RTMP.
Fix an invalid key for an integrated YouTube channel
Follow these steps in order. Restream’s published instructions call for both resetting the YouTube key and removing and re-adding the channel; changing a key only in an encoder may not complete this recovery.

- Remove YouTube from Restream. Open the Channels area in Restream, select the YouTube channel, and remove it.
- Reset the key in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio’s Stream settings and reset the stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Manage live stream settings.
- Re-add the channel in Restream. Return to Restream, choose Add Channels, select YouTube, and complete the connection.
- Try going live again. If the error persists, use the isolation test below rather than repeatedly resetting the key.

Make sure you have permission to reset the key
YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset its stream key. Editors and viewers do not have that permission. If you cannot reset it, ask an owner or manager to do so. When your workflow uses a key directly, copy the new key into the encoder as well. YouTube’s stream settings help.

Fix Custom RTMP credentials for a YouTube event
Do not treat this as the integrated-channel reconnect procedure. Custom RTMP uses the URL and key belonging to the specific YouTube event.
- Open the relevant event in YouTube’s Live Dashboard.
- Copy its stream URL and stream key.
- In Restream, open the Custom RTMP channel’s settings and paste the URL and key into their matching fields.
- Save the settings and try the stream again.

Check whether the event was created in YouTube’s mobile app
Restream says events created through the YouTube mobile app are locked to mobile streaming and are not supported through Restream. If that is the event you are trying to use, choose an event or workflow supported by Restream rather than trying to solve it by repeatedly changing the key. Restream’s troubleshooting guide.

Try starting a test stream on YouTube without sending it through Restream. This separates a YouTube-side problem from a Restream connection or event-configuration problem.

- The direct test fails too: Restream recommends contacting YouTube support.
- The direct test works: Recheck the Restream connection type, channel authorization, or event-specific Custom RTMP fields.

If YouTube accepts the key but the stream still will not start
These checks are for broader encoder or stream-start failures, not the first response to a key-rejection message:
- Update to the latest version of your encoder.
- Check the stream’s video and audio in the encoder preview.
- Review encoder error messages and CPU load.
- If the encoder output looks healthy, test the outbound internet connection.
YouTube lists these checks in its troubleshooting live stream issues guide. Its general guidance also says to obtain a new stream key and update the encoder when a key needs replacing: Manage live stream settings.
