The right Restream alternative depends on whether you need a scheduled, finite broadcast or a YouTube stream that keeps looping unattended. For a scheduled event, Restream itself supports prerecorded broadcasts with bounded looping and playlists; OBS Studio is a hands-on local option, while AJA HELO Plus is dedicated hardware for scheduled playout. For continuous cloud streaming from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it runs from the cloud, supports uploaded video at up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
Choose by the kind of broadcast you need
These tools do different jobs. A scheduled video event has a start time and a finite run; a 24/7 stream needs playback to continue after the initial video ends, often by looping a file or playlist. Decide which outcome matters before switching tools.
| Option | Where playback runs | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restream Upload & Stream | Restream-hosted video | Scheduled, finite prerecorded event or playlist | Video loops are capped; playlists do not natively repeat. |
| StreamNeo | Cloud | Continuous YouTube streaming from uploaded videos | It streams to YouTube only; it plays uploaded video rather than a live camera feed. |
| OBS Studio | Your computer | Local playback of a file or playlist with hands-on control | Your computer, encoder setup, power and internet connection remain part of the stream. |
| AJA HELO Plus | Dedicated encoder hardware | Scheduled prerecorded playout without a general-purpose computer | Specialist hardware; current price, availability and fit for a particular setup are not established here. |
| Upstream | Cloud studio, as described in YouTube’s encoder directory | Potential cloud 24/7 use case | The directory listing does not establish uploaded-video support, loop controls, plan limits or prices. |
Is Restream enough for prerecorded YouTube broadcasts?
Restream remains a reasonable choice when the goal is to schedule a prerecorded event, publish an event in advance on YouTube, or run a finite playlist. Its documented features are not equivalent to an unlimited 24/7 loop.
Scheduled videos and plan limits
Restream’s Upload & Stream workflow lets you select or upload a video, set event details and a date and time, choose distribution channels, and have the video air automatically. YouTube supports advance event posts. Restream’s help page lists Premier with a 2-hour video library and 1080p, Marathon with 4 hours and 1080p, and Media with 12 hours and 4K; it says looping is available on Marathon and Media. These are time-sensitive plan details, so verify them on Restream’s current Upload & Stream documentation before choosing a tier.

Loop and playlist limits
Restream says a single video can loop up to 10 times, with a maximum total stream length of 40 hours. The source can be an upload or a stream recording. A playlist can contain up to 40 videos and run for up to 24 hours, and the playlist feature is documented for Marathon and Media tiers. Playlists do not natively loop; duplicating videos within the 40-item limit can approximate a repeat sequence. A scheduled playlist can be previewed, but videos can only be added, removed or reordered before it goes live. See Restream’s loop guidance and playlist documentation.
When to keep Restream
- Keep it in consideration if you need a scheduled start, a finite run and an advance YouTube event post.
- Look elsewhere if the requirement is a playlist that repeats indefinitely or an unattended stream beyond Restream’s documented loop limits.

Run prerecorded video locally with OBS Studio
OBS Studio is a free, flexible alternative when you are comfortable keeping a computer on and managing the encoder yourself. Its Media Source can play common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and WebM, with a Loop setting. For an ordered playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source has a Loop Playlist setting; VLC must be installed for that source to appear.
Set up a single looping video
- Confirm YouTube eligibility. The channel must be verified and have no livestreaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Review YouTube’s livestreaming setup guidance.
- Schedule or create the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, set up a live stream or schedule an event if you want a shareable event page before going live. Keep the stream key private; use the key for the intended stream and do not paste it into public notes, overlays or chat.
- Add the video in OBS. Add a Media Source to a scene, select the file, and enable Loop. Check that the source’s dimensions and audio suit the output you intend to send.
- Configure YouTube as the destination. In OBS’s stream settings, select YouTube as the service and enter the stream key, or use YouTube’s supported connection flow when available. Choose the RTMPS server when configuring a custom destination.
- Set output to match the video and connection. Choose a resolution and frame rate that your source, encoder and upload connection can sustain. Select a bitrate from YouTube’s current recommendation for that resolution, frame rate and codec rather than assuming one number works for every stream. YouTube’s encoder settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS; the applicable choices depend on encoder support.
- Set keyframes and test. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and allows a maximum of 4 seconds. Start the encoder ahead of the event, check YouTube’s preview, and verify audio and video before sharing the live link.
- Monitor until you stop. Keep the computer powered, OBS running and the network stable. Watch YouTube’s stream health and audio/video throughout; stop the encoder when the event ends.
Use a VLC playlist instead
Install VLC, add OBS’s VLC Video source, add the playlist items in the required order, and enable Loop Playlist. Review the playlist before going live. The loop runs locally, so the OBS computer still needs to remain on and connected for the duration.
Dedicated hardware: AJA HELO Plus
YouTube’s encoder directory lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder for direct YouTube Live streaming. The listing says its optional PlayToStream function can schedule prerecorded media and stream it to YouTube Live without a computer; it also describes built-in graphics and remote monitoring. It is a specialist alternative for recurring unattended playout, not a prerequisite for prerecorded streaming. The listing does not establish current price, stock, firmware details or suitability for every consumer workflow. See YouTube’s encoder directory for the listed device and feature description.

Other tools that may not replace Restream looping
Upstream
YouTube’s encoder directory describes Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video streaming. That confirms a cloud continuous-streaming category, but the listing alone does not establish uploaded-video mechanics, looping controls, plan limits or prices. Check the provider’s current product details before relying on it for a prerecorded loop.
StreamYard
YouTube lists StreamYard as a browser-based live streaming and podcast studio. The official materials cited here do not establish a repeat-loop or unattended prerecorded-video workflow. It may suit a browser-produced interview or show, but it is not documented here as a like-for-like replacement for looped video.
YouTube settings and operating checks
Eligibility, scheduling and monitoring
YouTube requires a verified channel with no livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to livestream. Set up the encoder ahead of time, check YouTube’s preview, monitor sound and picture, and stop the encoder after the event. For details, use YouTube’s live streaming guidance.
Quality, bitrate and keyframes
Bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate and codec. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for the value that matches your chosen output. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube currently lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and sets a 4-second maximum. These settings can change; verify them when configuring a stream.
Copyright and reused material
Having a file that plays successfully does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast it. Confirm permission for music, footage, images and other included material, and review YouTube’s current policies before scheduling a repeat stream. Repeating or repackaging material also does not by itself establish that a channel complies with YouTube monetization rules; assess the originality and rights of the actual content against YouTube’s current policies.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting common failures
- YouTube does not accept the stream key: verify that the key belongs to the intended YouTube event, has not been reset, and is entered without extra spaces. Keep it private; reset it if exposed.
- YouTube shows no preview: confirm OBS is sending to the selected service and destination, then check the encoder connection and YouTube stream status. Start the encoder before the event and allow the preview to populate.
- Playback stops after the file ends: check that Media Source Loop is enabled, or that VLC’s Loop Playlist setting is on. A scheduled event tool may have a finite run limit rather than indefinite looping.
- Playlist source is missing in OBS: install VLC, then reopen OBS and add the VLC Video source.
- Video stutters or drops frames: lower output resolution, frame rate or bitrate to a level the computer and upload connection can sustain. Match the selected bitrate to YouTube’s recommendation for the output format.
- Audio is silent or out of sync: check the file’s audio track and OBS source mixer, then inspect YouTube’s preview before sharing the event.
- A scheduled Restream playlist cannot be edited after launch: Restream documents adding, removing and reordering items only before the playlist goes live; prepare and preview its contents in advance.
- A stream ends sooner than expected: check the configured event duration and the tool’s loop limits. Restream documents up to 10 plays and a 40-hour maximum for a single video loop, not unlimited uptime.
